i agree...i really didn't like losing kearns...lopez never really
tripped my trolley, though i give him credit for his ability and
production...I guess that i have to look at the fact that the reds
have had a glut of good and very good outfielders for a long time,
and outfielders are certainly the one area they can trade with...we
all know that ANY kind of pitching comes with a steep price, and the
fact is that pitchers that can help the team are a lot less available
than outfielders...
so yeah, i hated losing kearns, but i really think this was a pretty
good deal, and not nearly the coup for jim bowden that a lot of
people are saying it is...
one thing to keep in mind is the reds payroll and that, new owner or
not, i don't think it will be allowed to get much beyone the $60-65
million range...with griff and dunn, there goes almost 30 percent
right now, and dunn is due a big raise next year i think, so make
that almost 40 percent of the payroll...i've said it before...there
are another 23 spots on the roster, and if you want experienced and
accomplished pitchers...10 of them...figure an average of $2.5
million there...$25 million for pitching...$22-23 million for griff
and dunn...leaves some $13-$18 million for the other 13 guys...figure
guys like hatteburg, freel, valentine, larue, etc...all will be in
the $1.5-$4 million dollar range, say $2 million average...so you try
to put the rest...say 8 players out there for $7 million or so...not
in today's baseball market...you'd wind up with very little to back
up the regulars...
watch the teams that succeed...oakland, for example...they constantly
lose even their best, yet keep right with the competition...it's
because they get good prospects for those who leave in free agency,
and they trade for the same...they develop good young players...this
is something the reds used to do very well...and are just lately
starting to do again...
yeah...hated losing kearns...one of my favorites...but the reds can
replace him easily, any day of the week...hot shortstops are a little
harder, but then lopez' fielding was a part of the other teams'
rallies about as much as his bat and speed were a part of the reds'
rallies...clayton won't replace lopez in every way, but as the team
gets its legs steady, they really need the clayton type more than the
lopez type...
well...boy, i love yakking reds' baseball...been doing it now for
over 50 years...saw so many traded away, and often not so well...i
think this trade now could be very good...and it sure isn't anywhere
near as bad as some i've seen...
have a great day folks...

needed improvement and giving Kearns away was not our best move, but
as far results, well we got a shot this year at the playoffs,
something we did not had last year. The Casey trade was unfortunate,
though Hatteberg is doing very well on the offensive and in the
field, so at least we are covered there. Kearns was having a good
season, coming to terms, something the team has been waiting for
since he got in the major leagues back in 2002, still before this
season he was a .266 hitter. About alineating Dunn, well if he misses
him that much he should have married him. Botom line is the reds are
getting results for this season, hopefully the team can hold and make
the playoffs, if they don't they will have better pitching for next
year. The GM is moving forward, some deals will hurt, sure, but that
is reality. Lets give the reds a chance and hope for the best,
