During the last few weeks of this years cycling season, there have
been a few accidents on our rides. Some not so serious, a couple
that have been more serious, and at least one incident I know of
where an ambulance was called (not counting Ed's accident).
Recently I read about a cyclist in the Tour-de-Napa Century Ride a
few weeks ago who coasted into a rest stop and collapsed. Two other
riders who happened along determined he wasn't breathing and had no
heart beat. Fortunately, one was a cardiologist and the other a
nurse practitioner. They immediately started CPR and saved the
cyclist's life.
It made me think that maybe I should update my CPR/First Aide
certificate, and it occurred to me that others might be interested.
I looked for a program that would focus on first aid for cycling
injuries.
I tried American Red Cross and American Heart Association, but then
with the help of a couple of other cyclists I connected with Keith
Mitten, who is with the Enloe Education Center, and heads up Enloe's
Fit-4-Life athletic program.
Keith has offered to teach us CPR/First Aid through the Enloe
Program. Keith has been a medic for over 12 years, and would be
able to answer any questions we have about First Aid in general, and
cycling accident injuries in particular.
The CPR/First Aid class takes about 4 to 5 hours, and will cost $50
per person.
If anyone is interested in updating their CPR/First Aide
Certification, or would like to take the class just for the general
knowledge, please let me know by either posting here or sending me an
email to Gr8tgreg at yahoo-dot-com. When I know how many people are
interested, we'll set up a time and place.

Im a Jack looking for a Jill to ride with this Sunday, average time
for the 10 mile time trial around the 24:45 mark.
My wife Pam and I went out and practiced for this Sunday's Jack and
Jill TT. We used the River Road route. We did better than I expected,
but I have a question that I hope I can get an answer and/or an opinion
on.
What's the best way to handle the turn-around? This part is awkward to
me when I'm time-trialing by myself, but with two of us it's worse. We
didn't get a chance to work on this too much tonight because of heavy
traffic. We'll try again on Thursday night.
I'll be taking most of the pulls. Does anyone in a similar situation
have any special advice? Starting, accelerating after the turn-around,
sprint at the end, etc?
Thanks for the help!
Greg.
Nice! Those were great. Isn't Boulder lovely? :-)
There's nothing in those vids that I didn't learn from Senseis
Ackerman and Steves, but still good visual reinforcement of good form
for greenhorns like myself.
So how's about another clinic soon?

From the feedback we are getting, the event went very well. The event was also completed with no injury's or setbacks.
When the event was over and all of the clean up was done...Pam, myself and our 2 boys were totally alone in the park. (the boys were playing)... we just sat in the grass and talked....all that Pam and I could only talk about was of how generous this community really is (and I do not mean dollars). The event would have been a disaster without the "hero's" that saw a need and just fixed it.
I am so sorry that I was not there to see, recognize and personally thank of these people .....there were and are...more than I can mention....but some of them like...MARK CHRISCO, RODNEY COX, AMY KING, SUE KARMER, MARK BRADFORD, CHARLIE WATTS, SUSAN FROM FLEET FEET, HELEN WHEELER, LAURIE STOFFELL, (and her mom) ...just to name a few made the event a success.
Hi Everyone! The final Thursday night River Road 10-Mile Time Trial of 2008 will take place this Thursday, October 2nd. This will also be one of the last chances to prepare for this Sunday's Jack & Jill Team Time Trial, so come on out and give it a shot! Hope to see you there!!
Thursday 10/2 - River Road 10-Mile Time Trial: Registration will open at 5:40pm where 5th Street runs into River Road for this FREE 10-Mile Time Trial. The course is all flat, 5 miles out, 5 miles back. First rider will take off at 6:01pm and we will go in 1-minute intervals. Tandems and teams are also welcome!

I regret that I will be unable to make the climb to the pie. I just ran the Lake Tahoe Marathon yesterday and I found out that I have to work on Saturday to boot. I will try to make it next year if it is to become a yearly event.

The Climb to the Pie ride is this coming Saturday, Oct. 4th. Take a beautiful fall ride from Willow Glen to Alleghany, 5000' up in the Sierra mountains. 80 miles, 8000' climbing total. 7:00 at One Mile to carpool, on the bikes at 8:30 at the Willow Glen restaurant, corner of Willow Glen and Marysville roads. The course map and driving directions are available on the files page of this site. We'll have a small rest stop at Pike with water and Mexican Cokes. No sag vehicles and no on-course food, so bring your own supplies, but there are stores along the way marked on the map. Riders should be in good riding shape with bikes in very good working order; if you've been taking some time off the bike, I wouldn't recommend this ride! Think of it as a century ride without the boring 20 miles of flat riding. But if you like great, remote climbs on good roads with light traffic, this is it! Ride leader Mark,

Guess it doesn't really matter if you have a sales receipt.
The main thing is the effort to help recover the bike. I hate bike thieves!
No cramps Sunday, but then I had a big breakfast and bottle of Hammer Gel and lots of water Saturday before we finally got some food. Still, I've never been on a century that didn't have food until mile 47. (They could have at least warned us!)
Ken Taylor and I concluded that the people planning the ride must not be cyclists. Oh well, lousy road surfaces, great scenery and a good cause-- Defeat ALS.
I think that root beer float "recovery" drink Ken T. and I stopped for on the way home must have been the key to my recovery. I did 35 casual miles Sunday, riding into Chico for the bike thingy at the plaza (and a smoothie) and feel good today.

Yup. I saw that too. ChicoCorsaCyclingClub is a private group, but it's still an internet post.
Ken- how'd you feel Sunday after the Napa 67-mile "Metric"? All day Sunday my legs still felt like they could cramp up at any time. If they had food at more than just that one rest stop at mile 45'ish I'd be o.k., but that wasn't the case.

Sounds like an easy bike to spot on the street. On the slim chance
that one of us sees it, we would of course first call the police.
However, several years ago I had a bike stolen. A week later I was
lucky enough to see some guy riding it. I got out and grabbed my
bike by the handlebars and kept the sleazeball there until police
arrived.
It took 45 minutes for a police car to arrive and make the arrest.
That said- is there another phone number we should call after we call
the police? For Christa or one of her "representatives" who could
then get the word out to somebody who can come id' the bike while
we're waiting for police?

I know my neighborhood shop, The Bicycle Wheel, has special "demo" saddles in several models from WTB, avail for install/trial. I thought that was the coolest idea when I saw it. I'd imagine other brands/shops would have similar programs.

So I need to find a new model of seat that allows me to still enjoy cycling. Last time I did this
it involved trying and returning a dozen or so seats before I found "mine". The LBS hated me by the time I finished, so for the sake of Paul and Peavey and the rest I'd rather try doing it differently this time.
If you have a saddle that you aren't using, that is still in production, and that you would be willing to let me try for 20-30 miles, please let me know. I'll give it a shot, return it, and go buy one of my own when I find the right one.
Crazy idea, eh? Thanks for humoring me anyway. :-)
