I have climbed Ebbets pass from both sides as part of the Deathride.
Beautiful. You can also do Monitor Pass, also part of the
Deathride. If you like high speed decents...60 MPH then Monitor is a
must. If you just want the scenery, Ebbits is awesome. There is a
Park just outside of Markleeville, Grover Hot Springs, Nice rollers
and awesome country. Enjoy.

I found that 1 stage race gives about as much experience as a season
worth of crits. Everything came together, I began to see the race in a
much different and tactical light. Racing with a teammate is great,
you start thinking about what you can do to help each other. A word of
advice, do not succomb to peer pressure. If your blocking or sitting
back and waiting for your plan to develop dont take a pull at front
just because someone in the pack barks. I got a LOT of lipservice for
blocking and breaking up the rhythem trying to protect Mike Ricks
breakaway on the last stage of the Elkhorn. Your fitness is going to
be so awesome after three days of hard racing. Also another big thing,
NUTRITION. Eat a Lot during the race, more than you think you need to
get through it, eat directly after, always have a bottle of energy
drink with you, skip water not enough calories and sleep and nap as
much as you can. I saw more than a few people fall sick by the 4th
race. Good luck Geno, you'll have a blast, just wish I could go also.

That is a move of sheer brilliance. You are not going to be the same

So, we had 8 riders come out to test the new 10-mile Time Trial course out on Aguas Frias Road tonight - Thursday, June 28th. Even though there was a headwind going out, there was a tailwind coming back......and we had some good times out there tonight. A HUGE thank you goes out to Jeff Ochs for manning the turn-around spot out there......it's basically in the middle of nowhere. Thank you Jeff!! And also to Lori Cox and Sara Vickery for taking pictures and cheering on the riders as they came through to the finish line! And finally - you missed it - I made a bet with Steve Vickery that if he could beat 23 minutes out there, I would eat a banana peel........and eat one I did - pics can be found here: www.chicocyclist.blogspot.com .

Okay, the results:

1. Rich Thurman 22:33(and new course record! Well....obviously.....it's the first time we've held it!)
2. Steve Vickery 22:50 (Steve - that banana peel is doing somersaults in my stomach tonight)
3. Kris Blee 24:33
4. Kevin Speacht 25:24
5. Michael Rodriguez 25:54
6. Marc Nix 27:10
7. Jenn Gruber 30:20 (1st Place Woman - and new course record holder!)
8. Amy King 30:51 (Amy - tell me what I need to eat for you to break 30!!!! How 'bout......uh......an orange peel!)

Thanks again to all of you for coming out - this looks to be like a good course for the future.

As many of you know, I (& my bride) am planning a wedding. So any
chance to blow off some stress and race the bike comes as a great
pleasure. It just so worked out that we were in the bay area (wedding
related outing) this weekend and were able to attend the Burlingame crit.

I had redemption on the brain after an error filled race last weekend.
The course was.... technical. 3/4 mi, four 90 deg turns and a long
sweep around to the finish. Good pavement, well protected course with
a north breeze.

I stuck to my plan from Folsom, stay up front, for the first laps.
There were several half hearted attacks in the group which went
nowhere (can you say negative racing?). I got in the mix for the first
prime, which was taken by a very impressive 3-man Third Pillar
lead-out. The third prime, I took a long flier around the outside on a
whim. Dug really deep as I was closing quick on a Stanford rider
and... missed it by half a wheel.

The race started getting sketchy was at least one big pile up
occuring. I got a bit lacksadasical at was muddling around the top
fifteen to twenty and wondering "Gosh, why the hurry to got up front?"
At this point I looked up and realized for the first time all race
that they were counting the laps overhead, no on flip cards. Two laps
to go...

I dropped a gear and started my move up. Within a lap and a half I was
sitting about 10th and had half a lap to go. Coming around the last
bit of the sweeping turn, a lane the size of 101 opened up and I
siezed on it. The race for first was out of reach, but I gave what gas
I had left and managed to edge out a sitting up rider for fifth.

Lessons learned today:
-Know where the laps are counted before the race
-Don't stop until the finish

Yes, believe it or not, we actually had riders out for the 40 kilometer Time Trial tonight out on Aguas Frias Road. The conditions were very hot and very humid! 6 riders took part in the event tonight - which is 6 more than I thought would show! We'll be doing the 40 kilometer Aguas Frias Time Trial again in 2 weeks - next week, we'll go back to the 10-mile River Road Time Trial.

Okay, the results:

1. Geno Gruber 69:28 (On Michelle Beltran's TT bike - that thing is SWEET!!!)
2. Chris Ruggle 70:43
3. Jeff Ochs 75:17
4. Elizabeth Brent 76:28
5. Gabrielle Walters 77:37
6. Jenn Gruber 88:01(It should be noted though that Jenn had to stop twice - once to refill her water bottle, and once for barfing! Way to go Jenn!!)

You 6 amazed me tonight - I was just standing there waiting for you to come in and probably lost 10 pounds via sweat. Have no idea how you all did it out there. Way to go!!!
