We will be having the Messilla Valley Circuit Race on Sunday, May 17th - at 9:00am. Registration will open at 8:30AM at the top of the hill of Messilla Valley Road - just near the intersection with Pentz Road. The "A" Category will be starting their event at 9:00AM, and the "B" Category going at 9:01AM. The number of laps will remain the same - 10 laps for each Category(sorry - I know, I'm the devil!). Again, sandbagging will not be allowed! (Sandbagging would be an "A" Category rider racing the Category "B" race).

The Messilla Valley Course is approximately 3.5 miles in length with about 300+
feet of climbing per lap. 10 laps = 35 miles and 3,000+ feet of climbing. We will
have two water containers at the Start/Finish Line.

For a map of the course, please click on the link below:

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Messilla-Valley-Circuit-Race

Again, most United States Cycling Federation rules apply to these races - you know, WEAR YOUR HELMET, don't ride like a nutcase, and all that good stuff. A mention about Tri Bars - You can have Tri Bars on your bicycle - BUT, you must NOT use them if you are in a pack or paceline! Normally, in a USCF race, you would not be allowed to have them on your bicycle - but I know many of us like them on our bicycles and use them for training. This isn't the World Championships - we do these Circuit Races for fun, fitness and practice - but please be very very reluctant in using the Tri Bars in a pack/paceline situation.

For those of you driving to the course, Spring Valley School is approximately
1-mile from the Start/Finish.......or you can park at Butte College and ride to
the start(great warm-up and cool-down, with a store along the way). Parking on
the course is discouraged.

Helmets are mandatory!!

Water bottle hand-ups will be solely dependent on volunteers, BUT I will be bringing a small ice chest with some water bottles again(ice water only).
***Word of Warning - It is suppose to be very HOT this Sunday, so bring a volunteer and an extra bottle of you got 'em!!!

Hope to see you out there!!

AND - THE BUTTE SERIES HILL CLIMB INFORMATION IS BELOW:

Hi Everyone! So, we are starting a NEW Hill Climb Series this next Spring - The Butte Hill Climb Time Trial Series in Spring 2009 will visit various parts of Butte County, with the climbs and dates below. There was a similar Series done years ago here in Chico - 1981 or 1982 - by Tom Devol and Jeff Smith, who owned Cyclesport bike shop at the time. And, of course, now there is that almost-famous Low Key Hillclimb Series in the Bay Area every fall. In any case, we decided to have our own and revive the old Hill Climb Series.......with a few route changes. Below is a list of the tentative events with dates. It should be mentioned that these dates could change depending upon other events going on. And, of course......the weather! Rain will NOT cancel - but snow and ice will.

Note: The Chico Hill Climb Time Trial Series will be back in the Fall/Winter of 2009 - starting in September! The Butte Series will go from January 1st, 2009 to May 31st, 2009. This Series follows a slow progression over 5 months - starting with the Category 3 climbs early to get your legs ready........and ending with the Category 1 climbs in May. This should help you take advantage of those springtime miles!! And, yes.....there will be a Summer Series as well.

How does it work???  Below are each of the 10 Hillclimbs in the Butte Hill Climb Time Trial Series. Each climb has been given a rank based upon feedback from some well-known riders in the area (and climbers in particular - yes, I know - everyone is different, but this is just a low-key have-fun series, so no big whoop). Category 1 climbs are the hardest, with Category 3 being.......let's not say easiest.......let's say........not quite as hard as Category 1! Points will be awarded to the top finishers in each Hill Climb TT - the folks with the most points at the end of the Series, wins the overall title in their respective categories........along with the coveted Butte County Hill Climb Champion Trophy.

EVERY competitor who starts and finishes an event receives an additonal 3 points PER event. Also, if you volunteer to be the STARTER for an event, you receive an additional 5 points for doing that task.

The Point Breakdown for placings is as follows:

Cat. 1 Climb = 30-26-24-22-20-18-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1 (In other words, 1st place in a Cat. 1 TT gets 30 points, 2nd place gets 26 and on down the line - every person who competes in the event gets at least 1 point).
Cat. 2 Climb = 24-20-18-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1(The winner of a Cat. 2 climb gets 24 points, 2nd place gets 20 points and on and on.)
Cat. 3 Climb = 20-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1

And here are the Time Trial courses, the tentative dates, and their listed difficulty category:

Humboldt Road Time Trial - Jan. 1st - Cat. 3 - Definitely on January 1st. - COMPLETED!
Centerville to the Gravel - January 11 - Cat. 3 - COMPLETED!
Cherokee Time Trial - February 21  - Cat. 3 (Start at Coal Canyon Road @ Wheelock Rd. and go up 70, turn at Cherokee) - COMPLETED!
Cohasset to the Store - March 7 - Cat. 2 - COMPLETED!
Pentz Road - March 14  - Cat. 2 - COMPLETED!
Coutelenc TT - April 5 - Cat. 2 (Just stay on Coutelenc Road) - COMPLETED!
Vilas Road Time Trial - April 18 - Cat. 1 (From Nicalog to the end of Vilas) - COMPLETED!
Honey Run Road - May 10  - Cat. 1 - COMPLETED!
Forest Ranch to Lomo - May 16  - Cat. 1(starts at Forest Ranch Store; ends at entrance to Butte Meadows)
Lomo to Jonesville TT - May 24 - Cat. 1 (starts at Hwy. 32 at entrance to Butte Meadows; ends at the snowmobile parking lot)
(Yes, I have a Summer Series planned too!)

10 Climbs, approximately 18,000 feet of climbing in total, held over a 5-month period from January through May 2009. Consistency will be key in winning the Overall Series.

Participant Categories - the following categories will be offered for the Series event(see below) The winner in each category will receive the Butte Hill Climb Champion Trophy, along with Bragging Rights.........as well as any stuff we can get to give away as prizes:

Category "A" Men
Category "B" Men
Women's Category
Womens 50+ Category
Clydesdale Men (No no, I'm not gonna weigh you - just show up and tell me and I will give you a yes or no answer.....however, I'm looking for about 200 pound body weight or more)
Mens 50+ Category
Mens 60+ Category

As usual, sandbaggers are strongly discouraged ( A Sandbagger would be a Category "A" rider entering a Category "B" event). Also, if there's a lot of folks in one particular category, we may split those up into sub-categories, if needed. In turn, if nobody - or very few folks are in one category, we may eliminate it and add an additional category where the numbers allow it.

Although donations to put on these events are always very appreciated and accepted, this Series is FREE - so come on out and take advantage of some, or all, of these Time Trials in Spring 2009! Hope to see you out there - and I will have more details, maps and information as we get closer to the events.

AIRPORT CRITERIUM SERIES INFORMATION:

After the great turn-out at last year's Tuesday Night Chico Airport Criterium Series, we're going to be doing them again for 2009......but starting up a bit earlier this year. For those curious, the definition of "Criterium" is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criterium

This Series starts up next Tuesday, March 10th and will go through September 15th, 2009......just before our Chico Downtown Criterium on September 20th! Registration normally starts at 5:40pm - with the event starting at 6:00pm.

How does it work???

Okay, here are a few notes for this year's Airport "Crit" Series:

1. We will be using more than 1 course for the Crits this year......including throwing in some lefty-turn Crits to get a feel for those - and some Weekend Criteriums as well. For the time being, we'll be using our standard Tuesday Night righty-turn course starting/finishing at Convair Avenue - http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Chico-Airport-Tuesday-Night-Crit-Course

2. ALL riders must sign in this year - There will be a small table on the sidewalk at the Start/Finish location on Convair Avenue - just sign in at the table and you are good to go! Sign-ins start at 5:40pm -  the racing action starts at 6:00pm. We usually end the event by 7pm, at the latest - many times earlier than that - to get home before it gets too dark outside. RAIN AND WET PAVEMENT WILL ALWAYS CANCEL THE CRITERIUMS! In addition, last year we had some tremendous smoke from the Humboldt Fire in this area......which, in turn, would also cancel the Criteriums due to hazardous air quality.

3. The Category "B" races normally go for 45 minutes PLUS 3 laps.........while the Category "A" races go for 50-60 minutes PLUS 3 laps. There can be anywhere from 1 to 15+ Primes in the Airport Criteriums......just depends on the mood of the Dictator.....er......I mean, Director. ;)

4. Helmets are MANDATORY! So, please....please.....wear your helmet! Please!!

5. All are welcome - you don't have to do the Series - just come on out and give this Criterium training/riding a shot! It's amazing what kind of workout you can get in during a 45 to 60 minute practice event.

6. Points are used to calculate the Overall Standings in the Series. The point breakdown is as follows: 7-5-4-3-2-1, with an additional 1 point being given to each participant at each event. So, 7 points goes to the winner, 5 points goes to 2nd place, 4 points goes to 3rd place and so on.........in addition to 1 more point just for doing the event. The rider with the MOST points at the end of the Series wins the Overall Title - and the Chico Airport Series Championship Trophy, plus whatever goodies we can give you. Also, Prime points will be given out during each of the Crits - these are just lap prizes......but in this case, the prizes are points. We will also be having some product Primes out there this year!

7. Last year, we had just two categories during the races - Category A and Category B. However, the Series itself has even more Trophy Categories, including:

Category "A" Men
Women's Category
Women's Masters 40+ Category
Category "B" Men
Men's Masters 40+ Category
Men's Masters 50+ Category

These are the Categories which all qualify for a Series Championship Trophy. If nobody - or very few folks are in one category - we may eliminate it and add an additional category where the numbers allow it. As usual, sandbaggers are strongly discouraged ( A Sandbagger would be a Category "A" rider entering a Category "B" event).

8. Although donations to put on these events are always very appreciated and accepted, this Series is FREE - so come on out and take advantage of some, or all, of these Criteriums in 2009!

9. Finally, remember - these Criterium events are essentially for practice and exercise - we have fun out there and get a great little workout in, and we get to work on some quality cycling skills. But, overall, they're no big whoop....no World Championship/Olympic medals or million dollar contracts on the line. So, with that in mind, just treat 'em as such - a good training event to try some new things, gain some good fitness.....and maybe even get into a "real" sanctioned Criterium at some point in time. Or not. Just have fun with it!! We'll have trophies and hopefully some prizes for the Series winners - and definitely loads of fun....and pain and suffering. ;)  But remember - it's all in good fun!

Hope to see you out there!!

Anybody use, or know anybody who uses, size 650 tires?  I bought four Kenda Kaliente road tires at the Sea Otter Festival and didn't notice until I got home that they sold me 650's by mistake.  They're great tires--very light, fast, tough--just a wee bit small.  Let me know if you can use them.  I think some XS women's bikes may use them.

THE OMNIUM INFORMATION:

Stages of the 2009 Devil's Kick Omnium:

Saturday, May 9th - 7-Mile Lane 25-Mile Time Trial - 1st Stage of the Devil's Kick Omnium
Sunday, May 10th - Honey Run Road Uphill Time Trial - 2nd Stage of the Devil's Kick Omnium
Sunday, May 10th - Chico Airport LONG-course Criterium -  Final Stage of the Devil's Kick Omnium

How does it work??? Okay, in this scenario, an Omnium is just a stage race using points rather than time - and you do not have to complete one stage in order to do the next stage. You garner points for each stage depending upon how you did in the stage.......and, again, in this particular case.........the MOST points wins(many Omniums reverse this and have the least amount of points winning). There WILL be a Category "A" and Category "B" - you must tell me at the start of  your first stage which Category you are entering.......and no downgrades during the Omnium once you're in. Categories may be combined, changed or eliminated if not enough folks come out. Most USCF rules will apply to ALL stages - including WEAR YOUR HELMET, don't ride too much like a lunatic, and so on and so forth. Please read the section carefully at the bottom of this e-mail for all the rules pertaining to the Omnium. The 7-Mile Lane 25-Mile Time Trial - aero equipment WILL be allowed! And remember - the only reasons we're doing this Omnium is for fun and fitness......and maybe a little competitiveness too, but nothing over-the-top please! Ride safe, have fun, try something new and challenge yourself. Anyone doing any of the stages is automatically entered in the Omnium..........but consistency in the events will be key to winning the Overall. You can do 1, 2 or 3 stages - just whatever you feel up to doing!! So, come on out and give it a shot!!

The Point Breakdown for EACH stage:

Saturday, May 9th - 7-Mile Lane 25-Mile Time Trial:
(Yes, Aero equipment will be allowed for this event).
1st = 24 points
2nd = 20 points
3rd = 18 points
4th = 16 points
5th = 14 points
6th = 12 points
7th = 10 points
8th = 8 points
9th = 6 points
10th = 4 points
11th = 2 points
Everyone else = 1 point

Sunday, May 10th - Honey Run Road UPHILL Time Trial:
1st = 24 points
2nd = 20 points
3rd = 18 points
4th = 16 points
5th = 14 points
6th = 12 points
7th = 10 points
8th = 8 points
9th = 6 points
10th = 4 points
11th = 2 points
Everyone else = 1 point

Sunday, March 10th - Chico Airport LONG-course Criterium:
(NO - Prime Points DO NOT count towards the Omnium!!)
1st = 24 points (NOT to be added to the season-long point standings in the Criterium Series....those points are separate from the Omnium)
2nd = 20 points
3rd = 18 points
4th = 16 points
5th = 14 points
6th = 12 points
7th = 10 points
8th = 8 points
9th = 6 points
10th = 4 points
11th = 2 points
Everyone else = 1 point

RULES:
And Finally - ANY rider participating in ALL 3 Stages receives an additional 10 points.
Do you have to do all the stages in order to compete in the Omnium?? No - you can even do just one event and your points will still be calculated and counted in the overall. And REMEMBER - Safety come before bragging rights, so be careful!!!
As always, the Director reserves the right to DQ anyone deemed cheating, unsafe or unsportsmanlike(no worries - just be cool like always and all will be good!!).
Tie-Breaker - If, by chance, it comes down to a TIE after the last stage of the Omnium, the highest placed finisher(of the tied competitors) in the 7-Mile Lane 25-Mile Time Trial will be declared the Overall Winner of the Devil's Kick Omnium. After that, it will be the highest placed finisher in the Honey Run Road Time Trial.

INFORMATION REGARDING THE 2009 CHICO 10-MILE TIME TRIAL SERIES:

1. There will be more than 1 course used for this year's 10-Mile Time Trial Series. The courses will be scattered around the Chico area -  Chico River Road, River Road, Aguas Frias Road, 7-Mile Lane, Lassen Road, Meridian Road and others to be announced as the weeks go on. The idea is to get a feel for the various 10-Mile TT routes around the area.....and just to challenge yourself a bit! Many of these Time Trials will be on Thursday evenings at 6:00PM - however, there may be a few that are thrown in on a different weeknight - or on the weekend. ALL of these Time Trials will be flat to fairly flat. Most of the Thursday Night 10-Mile Time Trials WILL count towards the Series Overall Standings. (There will be a 25-Mile TT Series, as well as a 6-Mile TT Series, announced soon).

2. ALL riders must sign in this year - Like all the events so far this year, you just need to sign in at the start in order to enter the event. And, as usual in these Time Trials, we will be going in 1-minute Intervals. Again, donations are always accepted and appreciated - but all of the events are FREE!

3. Rain and Wind will not cancel the Time Trials, unless specified by the Race Director. However, crudy air conditions(ex. - last year's Humboldt Fire) will cancel them.

4. Helmets are MANDATORY! So, please....please.....wear your helmet! Please!! AND - Yes, Aero Equipment is allowed!! So.....wear an aero helmet!! Or just a regular one!!

5. All are welcome - you don't have to do the Series - just come on out and give one or two of these events a shot! It's amazing what kind of workout you can get in during a 20 to 45 minute 10-Mile Time Trial! And it's just you against the clock!!

6. Points are used to calculate the Overall Standings in this particular Series(makes it easier for the promoter - sorry!). The point breakdown is as follows: 10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1-1, with an additional 2 points being given to each participant who completes each event. So, 10 points goes to the winner, 8 points goes to 2nd place, 6 points goes to 3rd place and so on.........everyone who finishes 6th or beyond gets 1-point for completing the event. The rider with the MOST points at the end of the Series wins the Overall Title - and the Chico 10-MIle Time Trial Series Championship Trophy, plus whatever goodies we can give you. Points will be broken down by Category. Once you enter and finish an event, you are entered in the Series.

7. The following Categories are eligible for a Series Championship Trophy:

Merckxian Category - NO aero equipment!
Category "A" Men
Women's Category
Women's Masters 45+ Category
Category "B" Men
Men's Masters 45+ Category
Men's Masters 55+ Category
Junior Men
Junior Women
(If the numbers allow it, more Categories will be added!) (Can not enter more than 2 Categories per event).

And, as usual, the Series Organizer reserves the right to re-classify you at any time(within reason and with plenty of notice though.....this isn't the UCI!!!)

8. Finally, remember - these Time Trial events are essentially for practice and exercise - we have fun out there and get a great little workout in, and we get to work on some quality cycling. But, overall, they're no big whoop....no World Championship/Olympic medals or million dollar contracts on the line. So, with that in mind, just treat 'em as such - a good training event to try some new things, gain some good fitness.....and maybe even get into a "real" sanctioned race at some point in time. Or not. Just have fun with it!! We'll have trophies and hopefully some prizes for the Series winners - and definitely loads of fun....and pain and suffering. ;)  But remember - it's all in good fun!

Pam and I have severe cabin fever. We need sunshine and fresh air, and we need
lots of it.

So- how about an EZ-Ride Saturday morning? Leave from One-Mile at 8AM, head up
Butte Creek Canyon to Covered Bridge, with a possible bonus of the Centerville
Museum, depending on the mood of the group.

Speeds- 15-17mph on the flats, any climbing will be at your own comfort speed.

No Drops.

Hi Everyone! This Sunday morning is the annual Honey Run Road Time Trial. This course is approximately 5.3 miles in length and climbs approximately 2,400 feet - and is considered a Category 1 Climb in the Butte Hill Climb Time Trial Series. I still need 1 Volunteer to help me start the riders off on Sunday morning, so if you can help, please e-mail me at lorrod7@... . You can still race the TT - just be the last one to take off. Takes about 45 minutes or so to do the volunteering job - and 5 BONUS points in the Butte Series for volunteering too!!

Sunday, May 10th - Honey Run Road Time TrialThis is the 8th race in the Butte Hill Climb Time Trial Series! Registration will open at 8:15am at the corner of Centerville Road and Honey Run Road......right across the street from the Covered Bridge. The Start location is at the bridge that crosses Butte Creek........and the Finish is just before you get to the Muffler Shop at the top of the hill in Paradise. The first rider will go off at 9:01am and we will go in 1-minute intervals for this Category 1 climb.

Next year is the big cahuuuunnnnaaaa. The Wild Flower with the option to ride back to the fairgrounds in Durham if need be. I rode the metric jaboree with 4009 feet of climbing on Sunday so it is all uphill from here. Thank you for your encouraging words

Subject: Devil's Kick Omnium this weekend..............

When I first looked at doing this Omnium, I was wondering if anyone would even show up!! Well......now's your chance - the 1st Devil's Kick Omnium, consisting of a 25-Mile FLAT Time Trial, an UPHILL Time Trial going up Honey Run Road, and the Chico Airport LONG-course Criterium on Sunday afternoon - 3 stages over 2 days! Come to one, two or all three stages - it is totally up to you!!

Hope to see you there!!

Saturday, May 9th - 7-Mile Lane 25-MILE Time Trial - This 25-Mile Time Trial course has not been used in ages, but we are bringing it back!  It will take place this Saturday morning - May 9th. Registration will open at 8:30am near the corner of Ord Ferry Road and 7-Mile Lane. The first rider will go off at 9:01am, and we will go in 1-minute intervals for this 12.5 mile out, 12.5 mile back in, all-flat Time Trial. This is the 1st Stage in the Devil's Kick Omnium taking place this weekend - and is also Race #2 in the 2009 Chico 25-Mile Time Trial Series. A map of the course can be found here:  http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/7-Mile-Lane-25er-TT  (Stage 1 of the Devil's Kick Omnium) (RACE #2 in the 2009 Chico 25-Mile Time Trial Series)

Event is free and open to all - so come on out and give this classic climb a shot!!! You can see the map of the course by clicking on the Bikely link below - and the elevation profile can be found by clicking on "SHOW" in the top left-hand corner of the webpage and then clicking on "ELEVATION PROFILE" (this is a rough approximation):
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Honey-Run-TT     (Stage 2 in the Devil's Kick Omnium) (8th Event in the Butte Hill Climb Time Trial Series)

Sunday, May 10th - Airport LONG-course Criterium(using the 1-Mile course for this afternoon Criterium) - We'll be using the NEW Criterium Course for this event - the 1-Mile Chico Airport Long-Course. Registration will open at 4:40pm for this one, with the Start at 5:00pm. The course Starts & Finishes on Marauder Street.......over by the old Koret building on the north end of the Airport. A map of this course can be found here: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Airport-Criterium-Long-Course . This event DOES count towards the 2009 Chico Airport Criterium Series. Expect lots of Point Primes AND Bear Bucks!!!! This new course has a little elevation gain to it as well - not much, but just enough to feel it. Category "A" will go for 45 Minutes PLUS 3 laps(remember - the course is 1-mile in length). Category "B" will go for 40 Minutes PLUS 3 laps. (Final Stage of the Devil's Kick Omnium) (Part of the 2009 Chico Airport Criterium Series!)

1st = 24 points
2nd = 20 points
3rd = 18 points
4th = 16 points
5th = 14 points
6th = 12 points
7th = 10 points
8th = 8 points
9th = 6 points
10th = 4 points
11th = 2 points
Everyone else = 1 point

Sunday, May 10th - Honey Run Road UPHILL Time Trial:
1st = 24 points
2nd = 20 points
3rd = 18 points
4th = 16 points
5th = 14 points
6th = 12 points
7th = 10 points
8th = 8 points
9th = 6 points
10th = 4 points
11th = 2 points

2nd = 20 points
3rd = 18 points
4th = 16 points
5th = 14 points
6th = 12 points
7th = 10 points
8th = 8 points
9th = 6 points
10th = 4 points
11th = 2 points

Hey Mike –

Kudos, to you, too! I had to respond – I remember reading your email last year with amazement. You were inspiring even then  - and even more so, now! Just so you know, I have forwarded your messages to a few friends who think they can’t do the various Wildflower routes for one reason or another. Keep up the good work! What are the goals for next year??  ;-)

Wow what a great ride this year. Thank you also to everyone who
helped. I especially loved the ground markers. I overheard a
conversation in Redding at the Jamboree yesterday about how poorly the
turns were marked for the Redding ride with a page and a half of turns
as one guy piped up " you should of seen the markings at the Wildflower
last week. You knew ahead of time when you there and you knew in plenty
of time to make the turn". I am very proud of the VELO and the hard
work and dedication of everyone.
Last year I wrote a long email to thank everyone and went on about
how well the ride was received from the eyes of a "nube" riding the
flat flower at 320 lbs. I am now 280 lbs and by far the heaviest rider
I saw last week. Yet just as I promised last year, I rode the Mild
Flower this year and finished with enthusiasm. I also rode the Rice
Valley Tandem Ralley and the Tour de Ed as a warm up this year. Please
explain this to me though, how come I never loose weight after a VELO
ride. It's gotta be the food.

As of 7:30 am the weather is looking very unsettled and iffy, so I'm pulling the
plug on my Cohasset ride. Sorry for the late notice; what bizarre weather for
May! Don't forget, next Saturday--Paskenta! Mark
