The bay area is just fine. I was in Sausalito and SF all weekend.  Cool, foggy, breezy and clear.  I'm in Mountain View now, and it's also fine here.

Got an overnight pass from the wife, who couldn't get away with me.  Headed up to Mt. Shasta Friday.  A little haze in the air but visibility well over 20 miles.  Did a portion of the Shasta Summit Century, the flattest portion, Friday.  Got up this morning to a lot more smoke in the air.  Still better than here in the valley, but Mt. Shasta was looking pretty hazy.  North wind had died and let the smoke move north overnight.  Canceled my plans to ride up to Bunny Flats and checked out Yreka instead.  Looked pretty good, better than Shasta, so I did about 50 miles of the Siskiyou Century route.  Dark clouds were building from the SE when I left.  Shasta looked even worse when I passed back through.  Got a smattering of big raindrops just north of Redding, but dry the rest of the way home.

You can see the govt's daily figures for particulates and ozone for any region of California (or the US) at www.airnow.gov.  It says today, eg, that the air in Marin and the East Bay is only "moderately" dirty.  Nice source for planning your get-out-of-the-smoke bike trip.  All of Oregon and Washington look great, btw.

The Butte Meadows Road is currently closed due to a fire and precautionary evacuations in the Jonesville and Butte Meadows areas.  We will postpone the Colby Meadows Cross Country Ski/MTB trail ride and clean-up, planned for Sunday, June 29th until a latter date.

Hi everyone: if you're free to ride on Sunday, July 6th, save the date
for a fundraising ride we're doing to benefit the Butte Creek Volunteer
Firefighters in this difficult fire season. We'll ride to Centerville,
back to the covered bridge, and up Honey Run to Paradise.
We'll "borrow" an idea from James P. and suggest a $20 donation, but
any amount greater or less is fine, and all are welcome. All of the
proceeds will go to the firefighters. Come on out to show your support
for the residents and the canyon we love to ride in! One Mile at 8:00

Sorry - we will be doing the River Road 10-Mile Time Trial next Thursday evening - July 3rd - at 6:00pm(assuming the smoke clears!!). And don't forget about the Airport Criterium next Tuesday evening - July 1st. Also, the Thursday Night Market in downtown Chico has been cancelled for tomorrow night as well - just got word from the DCBA about it. Below is today's air quality warning:

Hi everyone: I've had a couple of questions about the pie ride and our
fantastic air quality right now. I just spoke with the head of the
volunteer fire dept. in Alleghany and he gave me the rundown up there.
There is one small fire burning in an inaccessible area near the town
that they're watching closely. It's about 100 acres today, and he says
the area is smoky. It's like here, with no wind to move the smoke
away. He says that if conditions return to normal and the wind picks
up, the smoke will clear out. I told him it's awful down here and
people won't want to ride unless the conditions are better from Oregon
House going east to Alleghany. We're going to stay in close touch, and
he's going to call me right away if the wind comes up and clears the
smoke. Unless it stays really bad up there and we decide to put off
the ride, Rodney and I are planning on driving the course to mark it on
Friday, and I'll post area conditions by that evening. Right now I'm
keeping the fingers crossed that we all get some relief and nice clear
conditions on Saturday. I'll keep posting as I hear more. Thanks for
your patience! Mark

Hi Everyone - The following Press Release was put out this morning by the Air Quality Management District and the Public Health Department(yes yes, I know - the air looks atrocious anyway!). In addition, IF the conditions remain like this on Thursday, June 26th, the Aguas Frias Time Trial will be cancelled:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 24, 2008

A JOINT AIR QUALITY ALERT ISSUED BY THE

BUTTE COUNTY AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT DISTRICT

AND

BUTTE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH

To:

Public Safety Personnel School Officials

News Media Sac. Valley Air Basin Coordinating Council

County/City Officials Adjacent Air Quality Management Districts

County Health Officer California Air Resources Board

Local/State Law & Fire Federal Environmental Protection Agency

Butte County & City Managers Local Hospitals

From: W. James Wagoner, Air Pollution Control Officer

Dr. Mark Lundberg, MD, MPH, Health Officer

The Butte County Air Quality Management District Air Pollution Control Officer and the Butte County

Public Health Officer are issuing an Air Quality Advisory to notify the public of unhealthful air quality in

Butte County with localized areas of hazardous air quality conditions due to smoke from the numerous

fires in Butte and Shasta counties.

Yesterday Butte County exceeded the federal health-based average 24-hour Ambient Air Quality Standard

of 35 micro grams per cubic meter (ug/m3) for fine particulate matter (PM2.5). The 24-hour average

yesterday was 109 ug/m3 which is equal to an Air Quality Index of 176. Today the Air Quality Index is

forecast to reach 205. At this level the air quality is rated VERY UNHEALTHY for all people; these

conditions are expected to continue until the fires are extinguished.

Smoke from wildfires and structure fires contain significant quantities of irritating chemicals. Residents

may experience symptoms during and after being exposed to smoke, including eye irritation, throat

irritation and coughing. People with existing heart and lung disease, including asthma, may experience

heightened symptoms. They should monitor their health and consult with their health care provider should

their symptoms worsen. These individuals should consider leaving the area until air quality conditions

improve. Even healthy people may experience some of these symptoms in smoky conditions. Seek

medical help if you experience symptoms that worsen or become severe.

Recommendations for Minimizing Smoke Exposure

􀀹 Stay indoors with windows and doors closed; run air-conditioner on “recirculate” setting. Do not run

swamp coolers. If it becomes too warm indoors, individuals may consider leaving the area to seek

alternative shelter.

􀀹 Minimize or stop outdoor activities, especially exercise, during smoky conditions.

􀀹 People in a “high risk” group or those who cannot find adequate shelter from the smoke outside may

need to move to an emergency shelter.

􀀹 Masks that filter out 95 percent of particles measuring 0.3 micrometers diameter or larger (known as

“N95” or “R95” masks) can be effective if properly fitted to the wearer’s face. These can be found at

large hardware and home stores. HEPA filter masks are recommended.

Public officials may take other precautions, including closing schools and businesses, cancelling public

events and calling for evacuation. If you are evacuated, make sure to drive with the windows rolled up

and the air conditioner on “recirculate.” Masks may also be worn when in transit to shelters to minimize

smoke exposure.

Additionally, pet owners should consider bringing their small animals indoors out of the unhealthy air

conditions if possible.

to us being able to raise over $400 to assist the American Red Cross

A special thank you to N.Rim who contributed raffle prizes for the

What:    MTB ride and Trail Maintenance Colby Meadows XC/MTB area

Who:    Larry Chrisman/Ken Atterbury

Where:    Meet at Hwy 32 Park & Ride at 8:00 a.m. to car pool to Colby/Butte Meadows

The Colby Meadows trail system is an XC Ski/MTB area located a few miles up the road from Butte Meadows.  Trails are mostly single track and unmaintained service roads.  Motorized vehicles are banned on about 12 miles of the 20 mile system on the attached map.  The trail head is at the snowmobile parking lot just below Jonesville.  Riding is generally easy, with some short steep climbs and fast descents through the woods on relatively(compared to Upper Park) smooth trails.  Larry has been the main player in developing and maintaining these trails for the last couple of decades and knows them better than anyone.  He tells me that the trails are in great shape but there is a lot of windfall from winter storms that still needs to be cleared.  This will be a combination of trail clearing and riding, ending with a stop at The Outpost for local news, food and brews.  This is a great opportunity to do a good deed and to get to know a mellow/cooler area for mountain biking (and a close-by area for XC skiing in the winter).

Contact Larry @ 342-7998 or Ken @ 693-2134 (or email me at katter@cncnet.com ) for further info.

Hi Everyone! So, just like James has been mentioning in his e-mails this past week, this Saturday is the Messilla Valley Circuit Race - Saturday, June 21st. Again, there is NO entry fee to participate in this Circuit Race, but we would appreciate any donations you could make to the American Red Cross and/or the Butte Creek Canyon Volunteer Fire Department for their tremendous help with our recent devastating Humboldt Fire.

The announcement for the race is listed below. Also, there are two sets of trophies for the winners - the Womens winner in the "A" Category, the Mens winner in the "A" category, the Womens winner in the "B" Category and the Mens winner in the "B" Category. In addition, we will be having a raffle prize! So, come on out to participate or to watch - or both! Hope to see you there!

Okay, here is the race announcement:

Chico Corsa Cycling Club will be having the Messilla Valley Circuit Race this Saturday - June 21st - at 8:30am. Registration will open at 8:00AM at the top of the hill of Messilla Valley Road - just near the intersection with Pentz Road. The "A" Category will be starting their event at 8:30AM, and the "B" Category going at 8:31AM. The number of laps will remain the same as the last race - 10 laps for each Category(sorry - I know, I'm the devil!). Again, sandbagging will not be allowed!

The Messilla Valley Course is approximately 3.5 miles in length with about 300+
feet of climbing per lap. 10 laps = 35 miles and 3,000+ feet of climbing. We will
have more water containers at the Start/Finish Line this time around too. For a map of the course,

Again, most USCF rules apply to these races - you know, wear a helmet, don't be
stupid, ride correctly and all that good stuff. A mention about Tri Bars - You can have Tri Bars on your bicycle - BUT, you must NOT use them if you are in a pack or paceline! Normally, in a USCF race, you would not be allowed to have them on your bicycle - but I know many of us like them on our bicycles and use them for training. This isn't the World Championships - we do these Circuit Races for fun, fitness and practice - but please be very very reluctant in using the Tri Bars in a pack/paceline situation.

For those of you driving to the course, Spring Valley School is approximately
1-mile from the Start/Finish.......or you can park at Butte College and ride to
the start(great warm-up and cool-down, with a store along the way). Parking on
the course is discouraged.

Water bottle hand-ups will be solely dependent on volunteers.

Hope to see you out there!!
