Ed McLaughlin, Chico’s bicycle advocate, and

all-around nice guy, was badly injured in a bicycle

accident. He is in a rehabilitation clinic and in

typical Ed fashion, is working hard to turn lemons

into lemonade.

Ed has given decades of effort to make cycling

better in Chico, but now he needs help with his

recovery.

Please make a donation and sign this Chico

Bicycle City USA poster for Ed. The signed poster

will be given to Ed, letting him know that Chico is

Pulling for him.

This poster will be available for signing at the following Downtown businesses:

Upper Crust January 10

North Rim Adventure Sports January 11

Campus Bicycles January 12

Pullins Cyclery January 14

New Year's Resolution Ride Reminder and Ride Announcement!

Saturday, 01/12/08
One Mile, 9:00 AM
Honey Run, Neal for some… others, to the trailer court and back.
Regroups at the Covered Bridge and Muffler Shop, 18 mph flat pace.
Ride Leader, John – 591-2720

Sunday, 01/13/08
NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION RIDE!!!

I drove the ride route this afternoon and I have to say… kudos to
Mike Peavy for another outstanding, unknown, scenic cycling route,
soon to be enjoyed by many! The mountains to the west were covered
with snow… so bring your camera! The route is pretty flat, so
it's `fixie' friendly. You will want to bring 2 water bottles and
some money for the general store at the half way point. Besides the
store, there isn't much of anything out there – check your saddle
bag for tubes and air… AND bring some fuel for yourself.

The weather forecast is for CLEAR / SUNNY skies, in the upper 50s!
Holy cow! …could it be fingerless glove weather again???

See you at One Mile to carpool!

Ride Info:
When:
8:00 AM, One Mile, to carpool
9:00 AM, Corning, for the group meeting
9:10 AM, bikes roll!

Where:
One Mile to carpool
Los Montes Restaurant, 1708 Solano Street, Corning, CA. to
ride - please park on the side streets

What:
39 mile route, 17-18 mph pace
55 mile route, 19-20 mph pace
Route led, maps, regroups.
Celebratory Ride Feast afterwards at Los Montes Restaurant

Why:
...because we love to ride! And, it's a great
Paskenta 'warm-up'!

Who:
All are encouraged to participate!
Please note pace of each group and plan accordingly.

Ride route maps are downloaded at the following site (free
membership required):
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/CycleSportCycling/files/

This event is FREE and is organized & promoted by
CycleSport! ...promoting a healthy cycling community through posted
ride schedules, organized group rides, and communication of local
cycling information & news.

If you have any questions, please call Mike or Ken at CycleSport,
345-1910, or respond to this email.

A special `thank you' to Bob Heron for his map making skills! Great
job, as always! Thank you.

Hammer On!
John

I agree with the comments baout Bidwell Park.  We do have our share of people that put sticks and rocks in the trails

Unfortunately the average park user doesn't realize
that in 98% of the encounters I have with them,
they're in the wrong: listening to the iPod, walking 8
abreast, walking Fido with a 50 foot leash, etc.
Perhaps the park department should just stripe the
road in a 75/25 manner and require pedestrians to stay
on "their" 25% of the road?

Hi Everyone - Well, as you know, Ed McLaughlin was in a very serious bicycle accident in December and we are currently working on various fundraising events for Ed in the coming weeks. What you might not know is that another local cyclist - Laurie Niles - was also in a terrible bicycle accident in November of 2007. Please see the note below about a great fundraiser for Laurie next weekend - it's a great cause and should be a fantastic time. Hope you can make it!

LOVE FOR LAURIE

Laurie Niles is recovering from a serious bicycle accident in late November. We are gathering to show our love and financial support to help with her medical bills and basic living expenses while she is rehabilitating.  Laurie Niles is a wonderful community heroine who was badly hurt on November 25 in a bike accident.  We are trying to raise money at a dinner/music event to help with her medical bills and living expenses while she can't work.

Laurie continually gives to our community with an open heart, a laugh, and her smiling blue eyes.  Let's show her our love and appreciation.

A Feast of Food and Music!

The Butte County Board of Supervisors will be holding a public hearing on the potential M&T Gravel Mine (the one proposed for River Road) on Tuesday, January 8th at 1:30pm in Oroville. If you would like to attend, please do so - cyclists are strongly encouraged to give their opinion on this proposed gravel mine on one of our favorite cycling routes. See Agenda here - Page 11 - http://www.buttecounty.net/cob/Web_Agenda_010808/A010808.pdf

Just thought I’d pipe in here – Dr Weddell is great for athletes as he was once a professional basketball player (in Australia!). He has a lot of experience with cyclists (including me!) and even has a wind trainer in his office so you can get on your bike and he will check you out for any alignment issues while riding. This alone was a HUGE help for me. I highly recommend him! He’s even expressed interest in sponsoring Chico Corsa – though I’m not sure the team ever followed up on it…

The 2nd Annual

CUTTY TRAINING SERIES

ROUND 2

"TUNNELS"

CHICO-HWY 70 TUNNELS-CHICO ~ 80 miles

Saturday, January 12th 2008 9:00 AM One Mile Recreation Area

Tunnels… straight up. Test your winter fitness with this Team Chico favorite in to the beautiful Feather River Canyon and to the Hwy 70 Tunnels. A straight out and back heading out Chico-Oro, Durham Pentz, then up Hwy 70 over Yankee Hill and down into the canyon, past Pulga and along the North Fork Feather to the SECOND set of tunnels. All riders in the lead group will tough it out for the first KOM sprint by taking the steep detour up Lunt Rd. near the end of the first climb, then connect back to Hwy 70 and continue towards the tunnels. Sprint #2 will be at the end of the last, long tunnel and the turnaround. Back out of the canyon, down to the valley and finish with a final sprint on Chico-Oro just before the bike path.

Notes: These rides are organized for fun(?) and are open to all who are willing to try. This is an out and back ride and people can ride at their own pace and regroup as the leaders are heading back. Come on out and try to make it to the tunnels!! We will try to have a support vehicle(s) but please come prepared, ride with a partner and have a plan to get home. Please dress WARM and bring plenty of food, water and supplies and take responsibility for yourselves. We will have ride cards with the route, but there will be minimal course markings, no road closures, aid stations or coffee stops, just dogs, squirrels, pickup trucks, and a bunch of bikers on a sweet ride in the cuts! For more info contact Aren at arentimmel@... or (530) 892-9868.

I know all our thoughts are with Ed these days, but I thought I'd mention that another American cyclist is struggling with the consequences of a horrendous crash.  Tara Llanes, one of America's great mountain bikers, had a terrible crash while practicing for a downhill race some weeks back and like Ed is fighting her way back to a normal life.  I'm sure she has the usual cyclist's medical plan, namely nothing.  By all reports she's a wonderful person, who like Ed has given to the sport in many ways. Friends have set up a fund to help her with medical bills.  You can contribute through www.tarallanesroadtorecovery.com if you'd like.  The site gives a good sense of who Tara is.  I might add, if you don't follow mountain bike racing, that the sport is so poor that in recent years racing on the national level has gone on with no, that is no, prize money at all.  These people live in VW vans and are happy to get parts from their sponsors, so your help would be greatly appreciated.  Just a thought.

10/18/08 - Solvang Autumn Double Century
10/25/08 - Death Valley Fall Double
11/01/08 - Borrego Double Ordeal

Registration is open for many of the 2008 Doubles already including Butterfield, Solvang Spring, Mulholland, and the Devil Mountain Double.  The 2008 Death Valley Spring Double sold out in 10 Hours so you should subscribe to the newsletter at
http://www.adventurecorps.com/lists.html  to learn about registering for the 2008 Death Valley Fall Double and watch the calendar at http://www.adventurecorps.com/news/calendar.html

In 1959, Eisenhower was President, 10-speed bicycles were virtually unknown, Greg LeMond wasn't even born yet, and the Los Angeles Wheelmen began holding an annual Double Century -- the "Grand Tour".  This is the original Double in the U.S. and also includes 300 and 400 mile options -- all of which count towards the California Triple Crown.  The Grand Tour will be celebrating it's 50th Year as an annual Double Century in 2008 and many special activities are being planned which you won't want to miss!!

Each of the California Triple Crown Double Centuries is a Major Adventure in itself!!

Over the years, we have spoken to many cyclists who picked a tougher Double Century as their first.  In many cases, they weren't able to complete it because of mechanical, biomechanical, or mental problems.  We are convinced that these cyclists could have completed one of the flatter Doubles with a great sense of accomplishment.  They could have found that riding Doubles is challenging but also fun!!

Not a single one of these rides is easy.  Each will provide you with a "Personal Growth Experience".  Don't make the mistake of moving into the tougher Doubles until you're ready - mechanically, biomechanically, and mentally!!

Once you successfully complete three of the above Doubles, you are a Triple Crown Winner and have earned the right to have those ride names included on a custom printed Jersey or T-Shirt as well as buy lots of cool products at shown at

http://www.caltriplecrown.com/products.htm

Bicycling publications and club newsletter editors receive your name for print.  Your name is included on this Web Site!!  You become part of a group of select Bicyclists and have the tremendous satisfaction of completing one of the most difficult Bicycling events anywhere!!

The California Triple Crown is a small, completely volunteer organization established to publish the schedule and the results of these rides.

In order to receive California Triple Crown Credit for completing one of these Double Centuries, you must be on the Official Finisher's list for the 200 Miles as published by the Ride Organizer.

If you want these rides to continue, please bring your friends and families along and ask the ride organizer how they can help make the ride a success!!

If you want these rides to improve, volunteer and do your part to make them better!!

Those who say it can't be done are usually interrupted by others doing it!!

Accept The Challenge: Be A California Triple Crown Winner!!

2.  2008 CALIFORNIA TRIPLE CROWN STAGE RACE ANNOUNCED

The 2008 California Triple Crown Stage Race will consist of the following Stages:

Stage 1: Mulholland Double Century on 4/12/08

Stage 2: Central Coast Double on 5/10/08

Stage 3: Terrible Two on 6/21/08

You don't have to do anything special to sign up for the Stage Race: In 2008, all you have to do is to sign up for and ride your heart out on the 3 Doubles in the Stage Race!!  Of course, that's much easier said than done!!  Also, if you ride any Stage on a tandem, you must ride all three Stages on a tandem with the same partner.

The California Triple Crown lays down this challenge: Be among the select few who are able to finish the Stage Race!!  Everyone who completes the 2008 Stage Race will be commended -- just to complete these three Extremely Difficult Rides is a MAJOR accomplishment!!

California Triple Crown Stage Race Plaques will be presented to the top 3 Men, top 3 Women, and top 3 Tandems at the California Triple Crown Awards Breakfast on 9/21/08, the day following the Knoxville Fall Classic Double in Vacaville, CA.

The California Triple Crown Stage Race rotates through 3 of the following 4 Doubles: Mulholland, Devil Mountain, Central Coast, and Terrible Two.  This rotation provides variety in the Stage Race from year to year, it allows Southern California cyclists to more easily participate in the Stage Race, and it is fair to all of the toughest Double Centuries in California.  For example, the Tour de France does not go over the same tough passes every year, and similarly, the California Triple Crown Stage Race doesn't go over the same tough passes every year either.

The California Triple Crown lays down this challenge: Be among the select few who are able to finish the Stage Race!!

I am in search of a person to ride with as regularly as time will
allow. I am pretty new to cycling so I am looking to ride about 15
miles at a time at a rate of about 15 to 18 miles per hour. I would
like to increase the distance as I become more proficient at riding.
My current work schedule is Monday thru Friday from 5pm til 2am so it
would need to be during the day as weather allows. If anyone is
interested please let me know, you can reach me via email or call 828
7341. Thanks
Natalie

Anybody know a good Chico chiropractor?  My back has packed it in, and my regular chiro seems to be on vacation.  The view of the living room ceiling is getting pretty boring.
