Charlotte – November 16, 2007 – The Human Rights Campaign's (HRC)
2008 Carolinas Gala Committee has announced a partnership with Campus
Pride for its inaugural Carolinas Youth Leadership Day.
In addition, the 2008 HRC Carolinas Gala Committee is seeking
applications for scholarships to attend the Leadership Day and Gala
dinner. Deadline to submit the scholarship application is Friday,
January 25, 2008.
The Leadership Day will be conducted on Saturday, February 16, 2008
at the Charlotte Convention Center in uptown Charlotte. The 2008 HRC
Carolinas Gala will be held later that evening at the Charlotte
Convention Center.
For the first-time in the 14-year history of the HRC Carolinas Gala,
HRC is offering a day-long leadership series for lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender (LGBT) and Ally college youth (ages 18-24)
in partnership with Campus Pride, the leading national nonprofit
organization for LGBT & Ally student leaders and campus
organizations.
The purpose of the Carolinas Youth Leadership Day is to provide youth
on the day of the dinner an opportunity to engage in social justice
training and to learn effective ways to be change agents in their
local communities. Leadership Day youth participants will receive a
free dinner
ticket to the HRC Carolinas Gala that evening. Applicants must be
able to attend both the leadership seminar, which starts at 9 a.m.,
and the dinner, which starts at 6 p.m. There are no registration fees
and meals are provided for the entire day.
"The Carolinas Youth Leadership Day truly takes the next step to
mobilize youth to action in local communities across North Carolina &
South Carolina. Not only will youth be inspired by the evening HRC
Gala, but now they will also gain valuable grassroots mobilizing and
leadership skills," said Shane Windmeyer, Executive Director of
Campus Pride. "Campus Pride is excited about this wonderful
opportunity to take our expertise and partner with HRC."
