SUNDAY, AUGUST 29th At the Eagle. Be there!
For years many of us have complained about the lack of choices in gay
nightlife in Charlotte. We wanted a chance to dance to pop hits and
have fun like the straight people -- and a chance to slow dance with
our special someone.
Well, before leaving for Washington, D.C. next month, I've arranged
to give us a shot at it. Next Sunday, August 29 I'm hosting "Ray's
Dance Party" at the Eagle. For once, we'll have an option other than
techno remixes or country music. (I love country music, but I also
love options. I am, after all, a very versatile guy.)
Come boogie down to Donna Summer, Cher, and the Bee Gees. We'll be
playing everything from " "The Twist" by Chubby Checkers, to "Let the
Joy Rise" by Abigail. We'll have all the great traditional gay
standards like "I Will Survive," "Believe", "It's Raining Men" and
the entire repertoire of the Village People. Slow dancers will
snuggle to "Here and Now" by Luther Vandross and "Make You Feel My
Love" (from Hope Floats) by Garth Brooks.
This is a very special night for me. It may be one of the last times
I have to party with friends in Charlotte. In addition, we are doing
this as a fundraiser for the Lesbian & Gay Community Center.
I have assured Gary and the folks at the Eagle that gay men and
lesbians in Charlotte really do want this choice. It is up to us to
make it happen. Even if disco pop is not your favorite cup of tea, I
hope you'll come out and support the Community Center and the concept
of choice in gay nightlife.
I know that Sunday is a "school night", so we're breaking another gay
taboo. We're going to party BEFORE midnight! The dancing starts at
7:30 so you worker bees can still get home in time to get your beauty
sleep. The guys at the Eagle are going to reserve some restrooms for
women so that both genders can have fun.
We are asking a $4.00 donation, part of which will go to the
Community Center. I am asking for your support. If I've ever done
anything to merit a favor, I hope you'll come out and support this
event. If, on the other hand, you hate my guts, please come out and
celebrate my imminent departure from town. Most of all, come have
fun, because that is what this night is all about.
Please forward this message to your friends and let me know what you
think about the idea.
