Has anyone been back to Chalmette and tried to salvage things?   Message List

I spent 2 days slipping and sliding in 6-12" of oil sludge\mud in my
house and have mostly only salvaged glass things and some running t-
shirts. I washed them in detergent but there seems to still be a smell
and stain on the shirts as they've fell partly in the mud. Is there a
way to get the smell out if not the stain too? I haven't been able to
get into office, baths or 2 bedrooms as everything is in such turmoil,
dark and slippery. My son-in-law had 2 snakes in his house so I'm a
little leery about exploring with just a flashlight but may try to open
curtains and windows tomorrow to let light and air in...the smell is
pretty pungent and possibly a health hazzard. If you go get good
gloves, I had thin surgical ones that ripped the first time I picked up
something so from then on I had the month old water\mud getting all
over my hands, running down my arms, splashing all over my chest, legs,
etc. I was a real mess after 6 hours of that! I had to get naked out in
the yard and change there due to the slop inside...glad no one was home
next door.<G>
