A thought Ed.......

Something you might wish to try with your helmet camera. You can
make a simple viewing frame (sight) mounted on the front of your
helmet which shows the view that your camera monitor is showing.

You can bend a simple stiff wire rectangle and mount it on the
front of the helmet in front of one eye. The dimensions of the
rectangle will be determined by the distance from your eye to
mounting point at the front of your helmet.

By doing this, you will see exactly what your monitor is showing.
Proper placement of the rectangle can be accomplished with a
friend viewing the monitor as you look through the sight. An
easy way is to stand facing a wall with a window. Move your
location so the monitor views the dimensions of window. Without
moving your head, adjust the sight so that you see the window
as the monitor views it.

In practice you should video whatever you view in your sight. It
is a good idea to paint the wire flat black to avoid glare. Also,
by placing the sight on the front edge of the helmet, it can be
swung up out if view when not in use.

Military helmets use this principal for many applications.

Regards,
Bill SFRR

got around this on the trike by hand holding it. My only concern with
the helmet mounted camera is that you can not see exactly what you
are recording. I have this problen to some degree with my Aiptek
because the monitor screen does not show up very well in the bright
sunlight. I have missed some of the deer and other creatures we
encounter on our rides in Florida. I have video of the event but the
subject may be barely in view or in some cases not at all.

the link to your pictures is truly fantastic..!! I am currently
experimenting with two cameras: the smaller one is a Canon PowerShot
A560, this one is 7 megapixels and it takes fabulous video, however I
have not tested it yet on the bike. The other video camera is a JVC
Everio full HD video camera that quite frankly, I am not sure if I
will be dumb enough to try... since this puppy is waaay too expensive
and heavy to experiment with at the moment.

30 fps and excellent stills. The auto focus and auto exposure work
very well except when zooming. When zooming it does not stay in focus
very well in the video or still mode. Overall I think it does an
excellent job for a $125.00 camera. It has as built in charger and a
separate wall charger. Video and still are downloaded easily with the
supplied USB cable. I have put some pictures of the mount I use on My
Rans Rocket and a hand held grip that I use when riding my Catrike
Road. I was forced to come up with the handle bar mount when on the
Rocket because it was not comfortable for me to ride with one hand
and I seem to do more shifting on the Rocket than the trike. Here is
the link to my flicker pictures. If you have any questions let me
know. You can e-mail me or call 727-791-4547.

Thanks for the compliment. It is much appreciated.
I have Movie Maker also. Simple program that works well. I wouldn't want anything more complicated.
As I said before, the stability of the bike platform is going to help your confidence level. Get comfortable with handholding the camera before you do any extreme camera angles.
Have fun.

Hi there Bob...

It's great to finally know who you are... your videos are fabulous.. thanks for the information provided. Even though I've been a Bent rider since 1994, I'm just getting started with this video thing. This is quite exciting, since I also just discovered that I have a copy of Microsoft Movie Maker...

I'll keep everyone posted on the progress...

Hi there Guys;

It appears that the Canon Powershot is the winner. I took the Ryan
Vanguard for a few rides around my neighborhood to test the Canon and
the JVC Everio. To my surprise, the small and light Canon Powershot
proved to be a far better platform for cycling videos than the full HD
Everio...not to mention for one-fourth the price..!!

Hey Bob...you're right about getting comfortable with the hand held
technique...wiping out while holding one of these nice cameras would
not be a pretty picture...(pun intended).

Next: process the video in MS movie maker, add music and other bells

It's interesting that you should mention wiping out while recording. While cruising the videos on YouTube, I came across a recumbent rider recording her ride and shifting cross-handed.

Without a doubt the best bike riding is between Tampa and Orlando,
Gainesville/Ocala or the Tallahassee area. The rail trails in those
places or the great hill riding around San Antonio or Clermont is
what I'd suggest.

I don't play tennis anymore so I can't help with that. Nice beach
riding around St Pete/Clearwater, too. You couldn't pay me to ride a
bike around Naples or Ft Likkerdale.

Hmmm - probably not Fort Lauderdale or Naples! Northern Florida probably has the best rural low traffic roads around - Gainesville and north. The Withlacoochee Trail would sure be nice to take in. Just about anywhere down the central park of the state would be good. I guess part of it might depend on how much biking he intends to do - is he looking for day-long 50+ mile rides or is he thinking more of the hour or two slow paced ride after the vino fog has cleared and before the new vino fog sets in........  If it's the latter, then most anywhere in Florida would work.

Does he want to travel on his bike or stay in one spot and do out & backs?
If he's here in the spring there is the Bike Safari, usually
in North Central & Northeast Florida. It's a bike camping trip around
some really nice areas. Or he could play tennis on a unicycle downing
a bottle of Chardonney! Could be a hit on You-tube!

I'll pass along the ideas....

This is an open ride for everyone in one of the best riding areas on
the east side of the state. It's my "home turf" and I've been on
every road on the route. The locals are accustomed to having bikes on
the road, and the scenery is really fabulous along most of the ride.

It's a curious route in that the finish (at Tomoka State Park) is not
the starting point, but it's not so far away as to be a big factor
either. Lunch is included as part of the registration fee and that
always brings out the riders.

As noted, it's not a recumbent-only ride, but it's a great ride for
recumbents, as there is only one big bridge to cross and no other
elevation changes.

It's listing 9, 26 and 38 miles, but I plan to start from my house, 11
miles away in the other direction, which would give me a fifty mile
ride. Anyone who wants to increase the trip distance is welcome to
park at my house and ride with me, leaving at 7 am. I'm a 16-18 mph
rider when riding with others.

I'm a vehicular cyclist and my route is selected with that
consideration in mind, but that should not make much difference to
serious riders.

If you're considering to ride this event, please drop me a line.

Joe, Looking forward to the Niagara NY ride videos. Did you ride your Trice Q or Gold Rush?  We'll keep an eye on CFRR and BROL for Bob's video report in the next few weeks. ... sounds like a blast...... Have a safe trip home.
Maybe we'll see you and Tom Barone this fall in Florida.

I've been riding with Bob, up in the Niagara Region, for the last
three days.

I'm sure you'll be glad to know that he has been flying the CRABS
flag "with pride," all three days.

As usual he's been shooting a "Ton" of video. So you can expect a
full report when he returns home.

He believes that his home has survived the storm OK.

It was great fun riding with him the last few days.

Joe

At the risk of contributing to the always-present inaccuracies in today's media:

The link above says only this:

Sentinel reporter Linda Shrieves is writing about the recumbent-bike movement and would appreciate hearing from anyone who has ridden one for a while or just switched over to one from a regular road bike. Email her at lshrieves@... or call her at 407-420-5433

But it also has other cycling related articles making for good reading.

Tom Barone did a fabulous job organizing this event. The venue and Tom's enthusiasm made it an outstanding Rally.
