Williams seeing his role grow

By Chris Forsberg  ESPNBoston.com

For the fifth time since the Atlanta Hawks made him the fifth overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft, Shelden Williams will suit up against his former team Friday night at the TD Garden.

If you believe Williams, this game holds no more importance to him than Wednesday's tilt with the Jazz. He swears he has nothing to prove against a team that gave up on him in less than a season and a half.

But Williams has also never had the opportunity to really make a statement against the Hawks. In those four previous meetings -- three with Sacramento and one with Minnesota -- Williams never logged more than nine minutes of play, totaling 12 points and 4 rebounds in 25 total minutes of action.

Williams is averaging 16.4 minutes per game in Boston, where he's carved out a role as a dependable, high-energy big man off the bench. Sure, his averages of 6.8 points and 5.2 rebounds still don't befit that of a former No. 5 overall pick, but Williams isn't trying to live up to those expectations any more.

The other night, Celtics coach Doc Rivers ran down the Celtics' offseason checklist, which included priority No. 1 Rasheed Wallace, and priority No. 2B Marquis Daniels (2A would have been Grant Hill, who instead re-signed with the Phoenix Suns). You get the feeling that signing Williams might have ranked somewhere below finding the next Lucky the Leprechaun on the organization's priority list.

That's not to belittle Williams, but the Celtics were anticipating bringing back restricted free agent Glen Davis, who had performed so admirably in a starting role when Kevin Garnett was injured last season. Between Wallace and Davis, there weren't a lot of minutes available in the frontcourt.

Williams arrived to fill the kind of role that Patrick O'Bryant was brought in for last year. O'Bryant, ironically, was another disappointment from that 2006 draft, never quite living up to his hype as the ninth overall selection.

While injuries have helped open doors for Williams, he's far exceeded what O'Bryant provided (1.5 points, 1.3 rebounds, 4.2 minutes per game). Just ask his teammates.

"The shocker here is probably Shelden Williams," Garnett said when asked about the bench after Wednesday's win. "I don't think everybody anticipated his work ethic and how he's able to keep rebounding and his production within the small minutes that he plays. He's rebounding, he's keeping balls alive, he's perfect for this team. He's that live wire that we need, especially with Glen being out; he's come in and filled the void that was lost for a second. He's just high energy."

Celtics coach Doc Rivers has stressed that Williams is still finding his way in the Celtics system. But he's often repeated that, "every day is a better day for Shelden with us. We just keep selling him his role."

Williams never quite knew his role in Atlanta. Earlier this season, he voiced frustration in never being able to find his groove with the Hawks. Just when he seemed to finally prove himself at the end of his rookie campaign, the Hawks drafted big man Al Horford, which relegated Williams to the bench.

"When I did get a chance to play [in Atlanta] ... I was averaging a double-double ... and earned the rookie of the month honor [for April]," Williams noted earlier this year. "I thought things were changing. I showed when I got a lot of minutes, I can be effective at this level. But they made changes, other people got drafted."

By February of 2008, Williams had been shipped to Sacramento in a trade for Mike Bibby. A year later, he got dealt to Minnesota. Boston marks his fourth stop in four years.

Now, Atlanta seems like a lifetime ago. Since his time there, he's married WNBA superstar Candace Parker and welcomed their first child, Lailaa Nicole Williams, this past May.

In Boston, he's been given a chance to reinvent himself. No longer is he the fifth overall pick, weighed down by the expectations of his lofty draft status. Now he's simply a cog in the bench of one of the top teams in the NBA and he's overachieving.

Williams is reveling in it all. Earlier this season he joked about how the Celtics' 6-0 start was the longest winning streak he'd been a part of in the NBA.

Should you believe him when he says Friday's game doesn't hold any added importance? No, it seems unlikely that Williams can see guys like Bibby and Horford and not be reminded of his past.

But on Friday the 13th, the man who now wears No. 13 has a chance to exorcise some of those demons from his past.

NBA Rumors: Friday, Nov. 13

InsideHoops NBA rumors updated 8:30 a.m. ET. Reload this page and our front page regularly.

nba rumors Already, Stephen Jackson is making it increasingly clear that he wants out of Oakland. Anthony Randolph is questioning his playing time, and Ellis and rookie Stephen Curry are struggling to find much cohesion. Now this: As the players cooled down from a practice at the Reebok Sports Club and prepared for the bus ride to the hotel, Ellis called Nelson over to the bench, where he sat alongside Jackson and Acie Law. San Francisco Chronicle

"Coach, why do I get blamed for everything?" [Monta] Ellis asked. Then, the coach and player had this heated dialogue: [Don] Nelson: "What have I ever blamed you for?" Ellis: "For everything. Everything. People not knowing their plays. I didn't do this. I didn't do that." Nelson directed a two-handed wave off at Ellis and left the facility. The guard yelled, "That's why I won't do it. I just won't do it." San Francisco Chronicle

According to a Warriors player, Nelson reprimanded Ellis in front of his teammates. The player said Ellis wasn't the only one who wasn't quite ready when practice was scheduled to begin at noon, but the guard still took the brunt of Nelson's anger. San Francisco Chronicle

nba rumors Responding quickly to a mayoral call, some of the region's largest developers are rushing to draw up proposals for a new sports and entertainment arena in Sacramento. And from the early discussions, it looks like downtown is back in play. Mayor Kevin Johnson released what he called a "request for offerings" Tuesday for a new arena that could be home to the NBA's Kings, saying he is looking for local help, and looking for it fast. Sacramento Bee

By Thursday, at least two developers, including the owner of the downtown railyard, said they plan to respond, and others were expressing interest. Under Johnson's request, a volunteer task force will accept ideas between now and Dec. 24, then take 90 days choosing the best proposals. The top ideas will be presented to the City Council early next year, Johnson said. Sacramento Bee

nba rumors As New Orleans Hornets players gathered at the Alario Center on Thursday morning, team president Hugh Weber met with captains Chris Paul and David West to inform them that Coach Byron Scott was fired and his replacement would be General Manager Jeff Bower. Paul wasn't happy with the decision, and he certainly wasn't pleased with being caught off guard by the announcement. He said the Hornets should have sought his and West's input before the decision was finalized. "I felt like, maybe somebody would have at least consulted with me and asked how I felt before it happened," Paul said by telephone Thursday night. "It's not to get my approval, but we feel we should know about the decision before it takes place." New Orleans Times Picayune

"You can't put all this on Coach," Paul said. Scott is the only coach that Paul has played for since coming to the Hornets as a first-round draft pick in 2005. They became golf partners this summer and Paul largely credits Scott for helping him develop into becoming a two-time All-Star point guard and Olympic gold medal winner. New Orleans Times Picayune

On Byron Scott: "To me the guy has done a great job down there," said Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry, whose Suns crushed the Hornets on Wednesday in what turned out to be Scott's final game. "You coach for two years and win 105 games, you would think you'd have an opportunity to right the ship before you're replaced, but I don't know everything that's going on down there." Press Enterprise

Hornets forward David West told reporters in New Orleans there were "philosophical differences" between Scott and some players, and hinted that Scott might have become stubborn in his beliefs. "Pride is a dangerous thing," West said. "Amongst the team there was a sense of a few guys not trusting what we had in terms of our system and our ability to know what we were going to get every single night from our system." Yahoo

League sources, however, maintain that point guard Chris Paul was not one of the players who had issues with Scott. Paul had remained loyal to Scott even during the team's struggles. "Chris Paul had nothing to do with it," said one source close to the team. Yahoo

Hornets officials told the players of the coaching change during a team meeting Thursday. Paul Pressey, Scott's lead assistant, was demoted with the change. Floyd will be the top assistant under Bower. Scott's son, Thomas, will remain the team's video coordinator. Yahoo

Although Paul has been frustrated with the team's slow start, a team insider said he was surprised and upset by the firing of the only NBA coach he's played for. Paul and Scott had a close player-coach relationship that extended off the court. The two played golf together in Los Angeles earlier this week with Hornets reserve Devin Brown and Paul's brother. Other team members weren't as shocked. David West, the team's other resident All-Star, found Scott's offensive system too rigid. Several of the team's younger players were unsure of their roles. Another knock on Scott was his handling of young talent. The team's two rookies, first-rounder Darren Collison and Marcus Thornton, have had difficulty breaking into the rotation. Former first-rounder Julian Wright, now in his third year, has yet to see his career take off. NBA.com

"I think we're all surprised," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "It's pretty early in the season, not even 10 games in that this would happen. "I had this conversation once with an owner that I knew ... commiserating with him about firing a coach. And he said, `Thanks, I know that firing's very hard on owners, but usually the players fire the coach before the owner has to fire him. "The players stop responding to the coach, and it makes it a lot easier, it's not a grudge match between the owner and the coach. So I kind of had to reconsider that a little bit." LA Daily News

Asked jokingly whether the Suns' blowout win might have contributed to Scott's demise, Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry shrugged off the suggestion. "Nah, we just play," Gentry said. "We played the best half of basketball we played by far. Them losing to us was not the straw that broke the camel's back. LA Daily News

nba rumors While the coach downplayed the impact of Elton Brand's struggles and Brand's consistently limited role, the team president believes Brand is feeling the pressure. Following Thursday's practice, Ed Stefanski said he thinks the $80 million contract Brand signed on July 9, 2008, only to miss 53 games in his first season due to injury, is weighing on Brand. "It's easy for me to say, 'Go out and enjoy yourself out there. The weight of the world is not on your shoulders,' " Stefanski said. "He's such a good person. Some of those things, I think, affect him." Philly Burbs

While Stefanski said he doesn't think Brand is back to 100 percent physically in the wake of a ruptured Achilles tendon in 2007 and a separated shoulder last year, Stefanski admitted that he didn't expect Brand wouldn't be on the floor at all in fourth quarters - as has happened in four of the Sixers' last five games, including Wednesday's 82-79 win over the Nets - in his first year playing for Eddie Jordan. Philly Burbs

Brand said he's not frustrated with how the Sixers are doing - "just me, personally, because if I go out there and dominate, you've got to play. If you go out there and have 14 rebounds, five blocks and 16 points in the first half, you know you're going to play." Philly Burbs

nba rumors Hollins is delivering a sterner message to the Grizzlies. Either shape up or sit. "It's up to them to decide if they want to be a good team," Hollins said. "And then they have to go out and pay the price every day. We don't see enough sustained effort, sustained second effort, sustained diving on the floor and sustained execution. ... It's just effort." Memphis Commercial Appeal

Q: Hollins tried challenging his team in huddles and holding long practices. What other means might he take to reach this team? A: Hollins didn't bite his tongue when he talked about holding players accountable Wednesday following a loss at Houston. He benched Mike Conley and O.J. Mayo early in the fourth quarter of that debacle. Hollins is prepared to do more of the same with anyone who lacks effort, doesn't execute or plays out of the team context. Memphis Commercial Appeal

Hollins hasn't trusted his bench enough, either. The rookies make mistakes but are needed, especially with Iverson sitting out because of a personal leave of absence. Living with their foibles now could mean they will be better after January. And, defensively, you'd expect to see the Griz send double teams toward a hot-shooting opposing player who is on his way to a 40-point night in the future. Memphis Commercial Appeal

Basking in the glow of a victory over the Heat, Cavs superstar LeBron James looked over at his idol sitting in the stands at AmericanAirlines Arena on Thursday night and made a command decision. Out of respect to Michael Jordan, who sat courtside and watched James score 34 points, James said he is planning on switching his number after this season from No. 23 to No. 6. It just sort of came out, but it was obvious he's been thinking about it for a while. And James wants to lead a movement to get every player who wears No. 23 in the league to give it up as a tribute to Jordan. Cleveland Plain Dealer

"I just think what Michael Jordan has done for the game has to be recognized some way soon," James said. "There would be no LeBron James, no Kobe Bryant, no Dwyane Wade if there wasn't Michael Jordan first. "He can't get the logo, and if he can't, something has to be done. I feel like no NBA player should wear 23. I'm starting a petition, and I've got to get everyone in the NBA to sign it. Now, if I'm not going to wear No. 23, then nobody else should be able to wear it." Cleveland Plain Dealer

Both consciously and subconsciously, the Cavaliers seem to be preparing themselves for life without Delonte West. Out of respect to his problems, both mental and legal, the team continues to be vague and clipped whenever addressing his status. But the more he's not around, the more the Cavs players and coaches are showing signs they're just moving on. West did not play Thursday against the Miami Heat and was not at AmericanAirlines Arena after he was with them the night before in Orlando but not on the bench. He was simply placed on the inactive list again. It didn't even seem to make a blip in the locker room or in coach Mike Brown's plans for the game. Cleveland Plain Dealer

If West is there, he plays. If he's not, then the team just plays without him and without much comment. "At this point, it's not a distraction," LeBron James said. "At the end of the day, what he's going through is more than just about basketball. He's going to continue to work out and continue to work to get back." Cleveland Plain Dealer

After getting badly elbowed twice in his chest area last week, Anderson Varejao has joined the growing number of Cavs who wear padded vests under their jerseys to protect their rib areas. James has worn a padded vest and compression shorts for the past two seasons. "I think I'm going to wear it for a while," Varejao said. "It's been a few games, and it has been good for me." Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ben Gordon knows he can score, but he wants to be a complete player. That's why his eight assists were almost as important as his 22 points during the Pistons' 98-75 win over the Bobcats on Wednesday night. More importantly, though, Gordon also wants to shed the perception he is a poor defender. He understands defense wins, and he wants to hold his own. "I think the more consistent you are out there and how you play on the ball is important," Gordon said. "It will take me some time to become a better defensive player. I have to be more consistent but it will happen." Detroit News

Under doctor's orders, Chris Kaman stayed away from his teammates Thursday. Nothing against the Clippers' leading scorer, but that may have been the best call of the week. Kaman is suffering from a virus -- not flu, the team says -- and the last thing they need is for what he has to go spreading through the squad. It's not a good thing if their numbers continue to hover around 10 and 11 players, at practice, and especially with a three-game trip coming up, starting at Oklahoma City on Sunday. LA Times

The Clippers haven't won when second-year shooting guard Eric Gordon is out of from the lineup. Gordon (sore left groin) will be out, at minimum, five more games. His value, at both ends of the floor, has only been reinforced this week. "We miss him tremendously," Camby said. "I never thought we would miss him as much as we did. Obviously he's the one guy who has to be a constant for us. A guy like Eric is sorely missed for what he brings to the court." LA Times

Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks sent a message to his team, and it resulted in a win as he stuck with bench players James Harden, Kevin Ollie, Serge Ibaka and Nick Collison much of the fourth quarter Wednesday night. The Thunder's bench outscored the Clippers' bench 26-11 to lead a come-from-behind win. Advertisement "I was rewarding the guys who played with great effort," Brooks said. "They were doing a great job. I wanted the guys who brought us back with their energy to have an opportunity to win the game." Oklahoman

Anyone who has watched the Bulls' first eight games has noticed Derrick Rose isn't attacking the rim with the same regularity as last season. He has had flashes, no doubt: The fourth quarters at home against the Bucks and visiting the Cavs come to mind. And Rose's numbers -- 13.8 points per game, 5.6 assists, 45.2 percent shooting -- actually aren't that far from his Rookie of the Year averages of 16.8 points, 6.3 assists and 47.5 percent shooting. Chicago Tribune

But first, Rose suffered a tendon injury in his right ankle that limited his preseason participation to one game and affected his game conditioning. Now, defenses clearly are playing him more aggressively this season. More often than not, guards pick Rose up fullcourt. Beyond that, double teams often come at him just past halfcourt. Chicago Tribune

Former Most Valuable Player Nash may be 35, but the Suns' recommitment to the speedy game revolves around him, and his staying healthy and fresh. Asked about protecting him, Gentry shook his head. "How many minutes should I be playing him?" he asked, adding, "He's averaging 34, which means he does not play 14 minutes. That's 14 minutes that makes me nervous as (heck)." Phil Jackson, a champion, literally, of the deliberate triangle offense is one of those who doubts that run-and-shoot can be sustained through June. "You wonder if you can get the same execution in the playoffs," he said. "The game gets more physical as you go through." Press Enterprise

The Mavericks didn't arrive in Minneapolis until about 3:30 a.m. Thursday and everybody except the low-minute players was instructed to rest as much as possible after back-to-back games and with three outings in four nights upcoming. ... As is his nature, Nowitzki was hardest on himself when recounting the loss to San Antonio. "I took a bad shot," he said of the Mavericks' possession when they had closed to within 83-79 and had the ball. "Maybe I was a little tired and just pressed too much. I just took some shots I probably shouldn't have taken." Maybe not a bad idea since he and Terry were about the only ones making any in the fourth quarter. Dallas Morning News

Nuggets newcomer Arron Afflalo will have the honors of guarding (or trying to guard) Kobe Bryant, according to Denver coach George Karl. Afflalo, an L.A. native, provides a defensive spunk the Lakers hope to counter with their newcomer, Ron Artest, who turns 30 tonight. The versatile but volatile forward has said all the right things since arriving in La-La Land, and he entered Thursday averaging 12 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists. Tonight's game will have enough marquee matchups to make an onlooker dizzy, but if there's one to focus on, it's Artest against Carmelo Anthony. "The Lakers have a good way at zoning (Anthony) up - he's not playing against one guy very often," Karl said. "For me, Melo is a simple theory. Big guy on him, go outside; little guy on him, go inside. Get as many baskets and touches in transitions as you can." Denver Post

Nuggets: Guard J.R. Smith will continue to come off the bench, with Arron Afflalo likely starting at shooting guard tonight. . . . Initially, coach George Karl thought he would play reserve point guard Anthony Carter more minutes than rookie Ty Lawson, but Lawson's emergence has led to 21.8 minutes per game, compared with 17.1 for Carter. . . . After six consecutive road games, Denver closes out the month with six home games and just two road games. Denver Post

Ryan Anderson, who is recovering from a sprained right ankle, had hoped he could play tonight against the New Jersey Nets, his former team. But Anderson acknowledges it would take a "miracle" for that to happen. Anderson has run and worked out at RDV Sportsplex in recent days, but he hasn't practiced with his teammates. Orlando Sentinel

Dwight Howard is the NBA's reigning defensive player of the year, but he hasn't blocked many shots lately. Howard has recorded a total of three blocks over Orlando's last five games. Howard's rebounding average has also dipped recently. He was averaging 16.0 rebounds per game after the team's first three games; now, that number since has fallen to 10.6 per game. Orlando Sentinel

Meanwhile, halfway around the globe, Casspi has accomplished the following: Forced his way into Paul Westphal's rotation. Influenced the Kings' surprising 4-4 start. Helped his brother, Eitan, improve his English. Inspired Maccabi partisans in the wee small hours. "Omri has been a shining light given the whole atmosphere of basketball right now in our country," said Eran Soroka, the premier NBA writer for the Israeli newspaper Maariv. "We are getting up at 5 a.m. to watch the games, and when Omri does something good, it's all over the TV and newspapers." Pressure? Nah, no pressure. Casspi, a former Maccabi star and the first Israeli to play in the league, says his text messages number in the thousands. His cell phone is overloaded. He intently monitors the Israeli scandal, known as "MoniGate," while maintaining an emotional distance. Sacramento Bee

As the Suns hope to keep shining on the court, one of the members of their family is seeking to do so off of it. Former Suns Dancer, Brittany Bell, who spent the last three seasons entertaining fans across the Valley, will be competing in the Miss Arizona USA pageant this weekend. If Bell should capture the crown, she will go on to represent Arizona on the national level in the Miss USA pageant. The preliminary competition will take place on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Mesa Arts Center Theater from 7 to 9 p.m. The competition will consist of contestants participating in both evening gown and swimsuit competitions. The case against a former NBA star who owes $822,500 in casino gambling debts is moving forward after a brief hearing today in Las Vegas Justice Court. Antoine Walker was scheduled to appear this morning in front of Justice of the Peace Melanie Andress-Tobiasson. His lawyer, Jonathan Powell, appeared on his behalf. Powell indicated that Walker intended to waive his right to a preliminary hearing and asked for a continuance. Another hearing in front of Andress-Tobiasson was set for 7:45 a.m. on Nov. 30. Las Vegas Sun

The father of former NBA star Jayson Williams has died. The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home said Elijah Joshua "E.J." Williams died Tuesday. He was 76. AP

Lebron Honors Jordan, Disses Bill Russell

Bill-russell

Via Yahoo! Sports:

Michael Jordan apparently was in the house when LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Miami Heat down in Florida. His presence has apparently inspired James to give up the number he wears, No. 23, out of respect for Jordan, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

James will be wearing No. 6 next season, wherever he ends up. He apparently wants every player in the league to give up No. 23 out of respect for Jordan. "I just think what Michael Jordan has done for the game has to be recognized some way soon," James said. "There would be no LeBron James, no Kobe Bryant, no Dwyane Wade if there wasn't Michael Jordan first."

Nice gesture LeBron.

However... do you realize the greatest winner in NBA history, and the true pioneer of the league - Bill Russell - wore #6?

There would be no Jordan, if not for Russell.

Celtics vs. Hawks  Preview

TIME: 08:00 P.M. EST VENUE: TD Banknorth Garden

Another strong start bodes well for the Atlanta Hawks' continued rise, but there's one feat they've yet to achieve that would help them further assert themselves as an Eastern Conference power.

The Hawks will get another chance at their first win in Boston since the Celtics acquired Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen as the teams meet for the first time this season Friday night.

The Celtics (8-1) have won all seven regular-season meetings with Atlanta since the start of the 2007-08 season, and even though the Hawks pushed top-seeded Boston to seven games in the teams' first-round playoff series in 2008, their four lopsided road losses in that series are among their nine straight defeats at the TD Garden.

Atlanta (6-2) nearly won in Boston last season, with the Celtics needing Paul Pierce's last-second jumper to win 103-102 on Nov. 12, 2008, but Boston earned a more comfortable 104-92 victory in the most recent meeting April 3.

"We don't play the same way we do at home," Hawks forward Josh Smith said after that game. "We get away from the things we do at home and don't do it on the road."

After they went 1-4 on the road in last season's playoffs and got swept in the second round by Cleveland, the Hawks are hoping things have changed. They're 3-2 away from Atlanta during their strong start, including a quality win at Portland.

They won 114-101 at New York on Wednesday night, shooting 54.3 percent from the field to open this brief two-game trip.

"We've grown," coach Mike Woodson said. "The last two years we've been in some tough games. We've won some tough ones and we've lost. You know this team hasn't quit these last two years and it's a sign of the guys in that locker room. We're all fighting for something. We're trying to be better than a year ago."

Atlanta used a balanced effort to surge past the Knicks, with six players scoring at least 11 points and four scoring at least 19, led by Al Horford's 25.

Boston employed a similar formula in its 105-86 home win over Utah on Wednesday, with seven players scoring in double figures. Garnett led the way with 18 points, while Rajon Rondo added 14 and 11 assists.

Looking rejuvenated after three days of rest, the Celtics regained the dominant form from their 6-0 start. Their previous three games, at the end of a busy stretch of eight games in 12 days to start the season, had been narrow victories at Minnesota and New Jersey sandwiched around a home loss to Phoenix.

"You could see the difference between (Wednesday) and the two games previous. Actually, three games," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "So it's really nice to see. Obviously there's not going to be nights when your top seven players all have double figures, but when you get those nights, that's pretty good."

A stifling defense continues to spark Boston, which is allowing a league-best 84.6 points per game.

Atlanta's offense, meanwhile, has been among the NBA's most efficient, averaging 107.8 points and shooting 48.2 percent from the field. Both figures rank among the top four in the league.

The Hawks haven't experienced that sort of success against Boston in recent meetings.

In the seven regular-season losses to the Celtics since the start of 2007-08, Atlanta has averaged 90.3 points. Hawks leading scorer and former Celtics first-round draft pick Joe Johnson has shot 37.3 percent from the field in those games.

Garnett has fun in laugher

He's a crowd pleaser during and after game

November 11, 2009, 11:34 PM

By: Chris Forsberg

BOSTON -- A couple of more performances like this, and Kevin Garnett might finally stop hearing questions about his surgically repaired knee.

Garnett scored a game-high 18 points to pace seven Celtics in double figures as Boston breezed past the Jazz 105-86 on Wednesday night at the TD Garden. Garnett finished 7-of-10 from the field, showcasing his top-of-the-key jumper in one of his finest and most fluid outings of the season.

But the defining moment for Garnett came when Rajon Rondo lobbed a third-quarter alley-oop that Garnett viciously threw down over Utah's Paul Millsap and Kyrylo Fesenko.

Although he crashed to the floor, KG sprang to his feet and raised his hands in the air as he raced back down the court while the Garden shook for one of the few times in Boston's lopsided victory.

"You know what, the alley-oops go so fast, it's hard to understand," Garnett said. "I thought it was a foul, but OK, whatever. It feels good to be healthy. It feels good to run. It feels good to sprint.

"I felt like a little kid in a cornfield. All you city folks don't know what it's like to be in a cornfield. So that's what that was like, though."

Sitting beside him at their usual dual postgame news conference, Celtics captain Paul Pierce could hardly contain his laughter as Garnett talked about cornfields.

"I know you know about it," Garnett told Pierce. "I can take you, show you. Show you what a cornfield feels like, what it looks like, all that . Inglewood."

Garnett was rolling at this point.

"Did y'all check out that new Gino footage?" he asked, referring to new "American Bandstand" clips of "Gino," who has become a cult hero for his dance videos shown on the video screen during Celtics victories. In recent years, the Celtics had just one clip of their favorite dancer, but new scenes have been spliced in, much to Garnett's delight.

After the video aired, the screen showed Garnett's reaction, including his mimicking Gino's signature dance move.

Garnett also enjoyed watching 8-year-old Daylon Trotman, a familiar fan who often is shown on the video screen dancing during timeouts. Trotman even upstaged a particularly excellent Gino impersonator in the crowd.

"That little kid's got it crackin'," Garnett said. "Lookalike Gino's not on the level right now. The lookalike Gino is just mimicking Gino. That little kid is giving you new things, stuff you haven't seen yet, stuff he's been making up. That little kid's got it crackin'."

Celtics' starts are startling

By Jeremy Lundblad  ESPN Research

Evaluating a team by the opening months of a season is a bit like judging a book by its cover -- and the table of contents. Maybe the dedication, too.

Only so much can be concluded from how a team plays in the first two months of a season. But this much is clear. Since Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen were acquired in 2007, the Celtics have unequivocally dominated out of the gates.

Off to a third straight hot start, it's now fair to call the Paul Pierce/Kevin Garnett/Ray Allen-era Celtics the greatest early-season team in NBA history.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

The highest winning percentage in games played before Christmas in the past three seasons combined (source: Elias Sports Bureau):

                W-L      Pct.
Celtics    57-6     905
Lakers    46-16   742
Magic     46-20    697
Suns       43-20    683

Since that group got together, Boston enters Friday night's game against Atlanta 57-6 before Christmas. Let that sink in for a second. 57-6. That's easily the best early-season record in the NBA in that span. Consider that the next best team, the Lakers, is 46-16 before Christmas. That would put them 10½ games behind the Celtics, who are on pace to make some history.

From 1980-81 to 1982-83, the Dr. J-led 76ers were 73-14 before Christmas. That's the best such three-year stretch in NBA history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Right now, the Celtics' .905 winning percentage is dwarfing Philly's .839. Boston needs to go just 11-7 from now until Christmas to stay ahead of those Sixers.

But nobody gives out trophies for a great start. It won't keep you healthy in April, and it doesn't guarantee you'll be playing games once June comes around. In the end, a great start is simply that: a start to something more.

So no one is calling this the greatest team of all time. These Celtics have won only one title together. That's not even a dynasty.

Yet, with the 2009-10 edition again causing Celtics fans to salivate, Boston's early dominance is worth exploring for its historical relevance alone.

MOST WINS BEFORE FOURTH LOSS

All these teams won the NBA title.

                     Started  Finished

'95-96 Bulls      41-3  72-10
'71-72 Lakers   39-3  69-13
'66-67 76ers     37-3  68-13
'07-08 Celtics   29-3  66-16

For the third straight season, the Celtics reeled off eight wins in their first nine games. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Rockets were the last NBA team to pull that off. They did so for four straight seasons from 1993-94 to 1996-97, with two of those seasons ending in championships.

If the past two seasons are any indication, the Celtics' 8-1 start is merely a preview of what's to come in the next six weeks or so. In 2007 and 2008, Boston's hot starts extended well into winter, making history along the way.

In 2007, the Celtics ushered in the new Big Three era with eight straight wins to open the season. By Jan. 5, they had added two additional nine-game win streaks for a 29-3 start, the fourth-best three-loss start in NBA history. The only three teams ahead of them -- '95-96 Bulls (41-3), '71-72 Lakers (39-3), '66-67 76ers (37-3) -- typically are mentioned among the best teams of all time.

Last season, working off the momentum of a 17th championship banner, the Celtics got off to an even faster start. After winning eight of their first 10 games, the team reeled off 19 straight wins, a franchise record and tied for the fourth-longest single-season streak by any team. Before the streak ended against the Lakers on Christmas Day, the Celtics sat at 27-2. That was the best two-loss start in NBA history, eclipsing the '69-70 Knicks and '66-67 76ers, who both started 26-2.

MOST WINS BEFORE THIRD LOSS

The 2008-09 Celtics lost in the conference semifinals; the other three teams won the NBA title.

                       Started Finished

'08-09 Celtics   27-2   62-20
'69-70 Knicks   26-2   60-22
'66-67 76ers     26-2   68-13
'95-96 Bulls      23-2   72-10

The 2007-08 season ended with a parade. Last season ended in MRIs, disappointment and a commitment to replenish the bench.

So what was the difference? Quite simply, health. Specifically, the health of Garnett, who missed 25 games and the postseason. With him, the Celtics were 44-13. Including the playoffs, they were 25-14 without him.

Boston's early-season success can be similarly explained. In the past three seasons, the Celtics' primary starting five -- Allen, Pierce, Garnett, Rajon Rondo, Kendrick Perkins -- has started more games as a unit than any other in the NBA. When healthy, these guys are close to unbeatable, and they've been very healthy early in the past three seasons. In fact, of the 63 pre-Christmas games played by the Celtics since 2007, that fivesome has started 59 of them.

As a group, those starters are 94-25 together. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that is easily the best record of any starting five with at least 50 starts over the past three years. The next best unit is the now-defunct Pistons five of Chauncey Billups, Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Antonio McDyess and the Celtics' own Rasheed Wallace. In fact, this group is establishing itself among the best in franchise history. Need proof? When in the starting lineup together, Danny Ainge, Dennis Johnson, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish went 138-38, according to Elias data. That's a .784 win percentage -- lower than the .790 percentage of the current group.

FANTASTIC FIVE

The Celtics' record with Rondo, Pierce, Allen, Garnett and Perkins as the starters:

                 W - L
2009-10     8 - 1
2008-09   39 - 12
2007-08   47 - 12

Apart from winning, keeping the starters healthy and fresh has become a clear priority for coach Doc Rivers this season. That's what makes this 8-1 start different from the last two.

Consider the combined minutes of Pierce, Allen and Garnett through nine games. In 2007, they had played 1,059 minutes. Last year, it was down to 955. With the added bench depth this season, the Big Three have combined to play only 890 minutes so far.

You are witnessing the greatest early-season team ever. If the Celtics stay healthy, just how great can they be? Imagine if the Celtics of the fall are still healthy when the leaves on the trees match the green on their uniforms.

Cavaliers seem to be preparing for life without Delonte West: Cavaliers Insider

By Brian Windhorst

November 12, 2009, 8:43PM

Delonte-West-life-after-for-Cavaliers.jpgDelonte West has appeared in only four of the Cavaliers' regular-season games this year. West is averaging 5.5 points per game.Miami -- Both consciously and subconsciously, the Cavaliers seem to be preparing themselves for life without Delonte West.

"My comfort level isn't affected," Brown said. "I have a feel that we should go certain ways when he's playing and when he's not. I'm good either way."

As is often the case in the NBA, the players' mood matches the coach's. Though they feel for West and are hoping he can at some point return to his level last season, the yo-yoing of him being with the team, then being away, then being back has seemed to desensitize the matter.

He left twice during training camp, and this is the second stretch of regular-season games he's missed. All along, the Cavs have said it isn't a distraction, and perhaps it has gotten to the point where it actually isn't -- everyone is just used to the unknown and the unexpected.

If West is there, he plays. If he's not, then the team just plays without him and without much comment.

"At this point, it's not a distraction," LeBron James said. "At the end of the day, what he's going through is more than just about basketball. He's going to continue to work out and continue to work to get back."

O'Neal/Ilgauskas experiment over: Wednesday night against the Magic, Shaquille O'Neal and Zydrunas Ilgauskas played long stretches on the floor together, but from now on, that should be considered an exception. After flirting with the pairing over the first two weeks of the season, Brown has decided to remove those two playing together from his rotation and plans only to use it when the matchups dictate -- such as against the Magic, who often will play two centers.

"For the most part, I don't have those guys playing minutes together unless I feel the matchups warrant it," Brown said. "There may be times we have to go that way against the Lakers or Portland or a couple other teams."

Moon returns: Thursday, Moon returned to Miami, where he played 26 games last season after being traded to the Heat from the Toronto Raptors. Over the summer, Moon had some discussions about going back to the Heat before the Cavs signed him to a two-year, $6 million offer sheet Miami didn't match.

The Heat was concerned about the luxury tax this season and protecting cap space for next summer.

"They wanted to bring me back, but I don't know what their financial situation was going to be," Moon said. "I actually thought I'd be back, I thought they'd find a way, but it didn't work out."

Varejao armored up: After getting badly elbowed twice in his chest area last week, Anderson Varejao has joined the growing number of Cavs who wear padded vests under their jerseys to protect their rib areas. James has worn a padded vest and compression shorts for the past two seasons.

"I think I'm going to wear it for a while," Varejao said. "It's been a few games, and it has been good for me."

Lakers dismantle red-hot Suns for sixth straight win

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- One moment after Steve Nash threw a pass into the stands in the third quarter, Lamar Odom found Kobe Bryant with an alley-oop pass for a behind-the-head dunk.

While the travel-weary Phoenix Suns played like a skipping record, Bryant's well-rested Lakers were perfectly in tune for their biggest win of the young season.

Bryant scored 29 points, Andrew Bynum had 26 points and 15 rebounds in his return from injury, and Los Angeles put the brakes on the Suns' fast start with a 121-102 victory Thursday night.

Josh Powell scored 14 points for the defending champions, who won their sixth straight and improved to 7-1 by handing the Suns their second loss. Los Angeles snapped the Suns' four-game winning streak, countering Phoenix's up-tempo style with strong defense and steady scoring from the low post to the transition game.

It all added up to an impressive performance for the Lakers in the first of two straight major tests, including Friday night's visit to Denver for a rematch of the Western Conference finals.

"We really did a good job focusing ourselves," Bryant said. "They do what they do, and we try to stop it. We showed a lot of control, a lot of maturity. It was a very disciplined game for us.

"After three days off to rest, Bynum looked sharp in his return to the Lakers' starting lineup after a two-game absence with a strained right elbow. Los Angeles still is without Pau Gasol, who won't make the trip to Denver while rehabilitating his strained hamstring, but the remaining Lakers have been mostly dominant through eight games.

"I got my legs back, and I'm fresh," Bynum said. "As far as the elbow goes, I'm going to continue getting treatment. It hurts a little bit, but it's going to be that way for a little while.

"Nash had 13 points and five assists for the Suns, who had their worst shooting night of the season. The two-time MVP sat out the final 15 1/2 minutes after getting little help from his teammates, who were clearly gassed after playing at home on Wednesday night.

Phoenix's only two losses this season came against last summer's NBA finalists -- but Los Angeles was the Suns' seventh stop in the past 10 days, and it showed.

"We knew [this game] was a great test for us," Nash said. "Unfortunately, we just didn't have the legs tonight to give them a good shot, so we can look back and throw this one away. We didn't give them any resistance tonight. Back-to-backs happen, but the seven games in 10 days in seven cities just caught up with us.

"Amare Stoudemire endured a 2-for-15 shooting night, while Grant Hill managed just nine points. Jason Richardson missed all five of his 3-point attempts while scoring only five points for the NBA's highest-scoring team, although the reserves had 21 in the final 5:45 to help Phoenix reach 100 for the 10th time this season.

Jared Dudley led the Suns with 14 points, but they failed to match the 1980-81 club's franchise-best 9-1 start. The Suns made just 36.5 percent of their shots (38 for 104) after never going lower than 45.5 percent this season.

"They have a really good team, and now with Bynum back, it's just tough matchups all around," Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry said. "They just took us out of everything we tried to do. We miss a dunk, and they come back with a three-point play. We miss an open shot, and then they come down with a 3-point shot. They're a great basketball team. I don't know if they have a weakness, after looking around.

"In the first half, Los Angeles frequently played at something approaching the Suns' favored breakneck tempo. The Lakers were better at it than Phoenix -- but they also were better at slowing it down and getting the ball inside to Bynum and Bryant, who has excelled as a low-post scorer this season.

After Bryant's 12 first-quarter points put the Lakers ahead early, Los Angeles scored the final eight points of the first half to take a 59-45 lead. Phoenix had just five assists on its 17 first-half field goals -- nine fewer baskets than the Lakers.

After Odom's alley-oop to Bryant put the Lakers up 80-55 in the third, Shannon Brown punctuated the win with consecutive high-flying dunks in the lane midway through the fourth quarter, putting Los Angeles up by 26.

Game notes

Lakers coach Phil Jackson earned his 1,048th victory, tying Charlotte's Larry Brown for fifth-most in NBA history. ... Gentry and Jackson both expressed surprise at New Orleans coach Byron Scott's firing earlier in the day. Los Angeles and the Suns both routed the Hornets in the past week, but both coaches thought Scott had earned more time to figure out his club's rotation. ... Richardson and Los Angeles' Sasha Vujacic got offsetting technical fouls 4.3 seconds before halftime for a confrontation after Richardson's hard foul on Bryant. ... The Rev. Jesse Jackson, Zac Efron, Heather Locklear, George Lopez and Eliza Dushku were among the courtside celebrities.

Fast Facts

• The Lakers won their sixth straight game, improving to 21-3 in their last 24 at home.

• The Suns have lost five of their last six to the Lakers.

• Andrew Bynum scored 26 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for his third 20-point, 10-board game of the season.

Williams: Onward, upward

He’s thriving in role off the bench

By Frank Dell’Apa
Globe Staff / November 13, 2009

WALTHAM - Shelden Williams has definitely moved on. After an unsteady start to his professional career with Atlanta, he appears to have found his niche with his fourth NBA team, the Celtics.

The Hawks, who play the Celtics tonight at TD Garden, made Williams the fifth pick in the 2007 draft and slotted him into their starting lineup right away. He soon fell out of favor with coachMike Woodson and has not been a starter in a starting lineup since that season, taking a reserve role with the Hawks, Sacramento, and Minnesota before this season.

Williams is on the Celtics bench, but he is among the team leaders in shooting percentage (.567), free throw percentage (.871), and rebounds (5.2 per game). He is second to Ray Allen in free throw attempts (31) and third in rebounds (47) in less than 17 minutes per game.

Does he have something to prove to the Hawks?

“Not anymore,’’ Williams said. “The first couple times I played against them, I would tell you so. But now, I approach them just like another team.

“I don’t need those type of things to get me going. I have other personal things that get me going.’’

The Hawks’ expectations for Williams might have been unrealistic. The Celtics, though, are holding him to a high standard, as well.

“He’s been what he should be,’’ coach Doc Rivers said. “Shelden is a solid player and he can be better than he is right now. He’s playing great for us, he’s making shots, he’s rebounding, he’s starting to figure out his role.

“But he’s got a long way to go, as far as I’m concerned. He’s going to be a much better player later, because he still doesn’t know half our schemes.

“We said it when we got him - it’s in him and he’s proving that. Shelden was the best player in college, and that doesn’t go away; he doesn’t forget that. We’ve just got to remind him and we’ve got to get him back to that.’’

The Celtics might have rejuvenated Williams’s career. But it might not have happened this quickly had Glen Davis (broken right hand) remained healthy. Williams has played in all nine games, displaying inside savvy and a smooth turnaround jumper.

“Shelden hasn’t surprised me at all,’’ Kevin Garnett said. “I knew he was a blue-collar guy, he’ll stick his nose in there and be around the basket a lot and keep a lot of balls alive. His jump shot, the 15-foot range, if not deeper than that, has been a bit of a surprise. I haven’t seen a lot of Shelden, playing against him, but the things I have seen - he’s very solid at what he does.’’

Williams appears to have recovered from any crisis in confidence a roller-coaster career caused.

“I don’t think there was a lot of consistency in my minutes [in Atlanta],’’ Williams said. “When I played significant minutes, I had double-doubles more often than not, especially at the end of the season, when I was getting a lot of minutes. Then, all of a sudden it goes from me playing to me not playing, so I don’t think I was given a fair shot.

“There was no communication there, so I had no idea what exactly they wanted. I don’t think there was pressure. It wasn’t a good situation I came into, the way things were there. I never knew what to expect, never knew what was going on.’’

Contact sport
Paul Pierce sustained a cut on his right cheek, thanks to a Brian Scalabrineelbow, during yesterday’s practice. He finished the 1 1/2-hour session with a bandage on his face. Scalabrine was practicing for the first time this week - back spasms kept him out of the win over Utah Wednesday - and he is expected to play against Atlanta.

House unrest
Eddie House was grunting as he walked off the court following Wednesday’s win. The emotional guard was visibly upset, and yesterday he looked to atone in practice for his struggles.

House was 2 for 7 from the field against the Jazz and is 4 for 21 over the past four games. He also committed three turnovers against Utah.

“I’m happy that we’re winning, don’t get me wrong,’’ he said. “I thought I played bad yesterday. I was just upset at how I played, that was it. I had shots I thought I should have been making. Those things are upsetting.

“Especially the last few games, that’s how I have been playing. I feel like I am not doing my job. I take full responsibility for that.’’

House is hitting a sparkling 44.8 percent of his 3-point attempts but is just 9 for 23 inside the arc. He also has been troubled by his decision-making and ball-handling. He was the last healthy Celtic to leave practice.

“The shots that I am getting, I should be making,’’ he said. “I went back and watched the film last night and there was some horrible decision-making that I had. And those are the things that I have to correct.

“That’s why I am looking at film. That’s why I come early, to try to get things right. There’s no excuses. I have been in the league for 10 years and I am not playing up to my standards right now.’’

Celtics: Dancing to a different beat

WALTHAM —

Kevin Garnett said he put on his dancing shoes to help him get back to where he wants to be defensively during offseason rehabilitation from right knee surgery.

The offense has been a more complicated fix, but it appears over the last few games he is adding to that repertoire as well.

Showing an aggressiveness he lacked in the first two weeks of the season, Garnett has averaged 17.7 points per game over the last three contests to up his overall scoring to 13.4 ppg (in just 29.9 minutes). He has gone to the basket more often, more effectively, and has refined his connection with Rajon Rondo on alley-oop plays.

"I am just getting confidence," he said following yesterday's workout. "After I get done talking with you guys (in the media), I go up there (to the weight room) to do my regimen. I get confidence from that and it's getting stronger and stronger.

"Rhythm is everything. I am not in the rhythm I want to be in. But it's a long season and I tend to think I will turn the corner at some point. As each game comes, I am getting confidence. But it is peaks and valleys."

Those valleys included a three-point night on 1-of-7 shooting in Boston's blowout of the Sixers on Nov. 3, and a 3-for-13 performance Saturday in New Jersey. But as he attacks the basket more, he gets to the foul line more, making even off-shooting nights more productive.

In the last two games, he has gone to the line seven times (going 7-for-7) after earning only 11 free throws in the first seven games.

"He's just getting quicker," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "He's getting more sure. His legs are getting stronger. (Wednesday) night, you could see him beating guys off the dribble - he hadn't been doing that. It will just come slowly."

Garnett seems to accept that as he regains the timing he lost when last season ended prematurely. He spent most of the summer conditioning. And, he claims, dancing.

"I'm a dancer, believe it or not," he said. "So I took a lot of those movements to be able to be on your heels and turn, and swing. If y'all know the samba, you're moving your hips. Believe it or not, that did help me a little bit."

As his burst has returned offensively, regaining confidence in Rondo's ability to find him going to the rim has not been an issue.

"Rondo and I have a connection," he said. "I don't think you can really (defend) that play, because if you go back, it's a pick-and-roll. If you go up too far, it's an oop. It's not even a play. It's more of a read, and just playing basketball."

* * * * *

Brian Scalabrine was back at practice yesterday after sitting out Wednesday's game with back spasms. His return was not without incident as he caught Paul Pierce on a drive to the basket and cut his cheek, which required bandaging. The team deemed the cut minor.

Shelden Williams fitting in with Celtics

The Patriot Ledger

BOSTON —
WALTHAM – You’re going to like this kid Shelden Williams.

He’s tough and strong. Really smart, too. He graduated from Duke University.

Williams hopes you like him a whole lot more than the Atlanta Hawks did during his rookie season, when he became the fifth pick of the 2006 NBA draft.

“It wasn’t a good situation that I came into, I guess, with the way things were run there,” said Williams, the Celtics newcomer who’ll face his old club Friday night at the Garden.

“I never knew what to expect. I never knew what was going on. I’d have a good game and then the next couple of games I really didn’t play at all. I know rookies have to go through ups and downs and everything … but I guess they saw things differently.”

Williams has been productive thus far with the Celtics, a godsend, actually. In Glen Davis’ absence, he’s averaging 6.8 points and 5.2 rebounds. In the second and third games of the season, against Chicago and Charlotte, he pulled down 19 boards.

Yet, Williams was bounced out of Atlanta during his second season, and made stops in Sacramento and Minnesota after that. Seems like nobody wanted him. Except the Celtics. They love him, even if there have been some growing pains as far as learning a new system and its terminology.

After the Celts beat the Jazz Wednesday, Kevin Garnett said, “The shocker here is probably Shelden Williams. I don’t think everybody anticipated his work ethic and how he’s able to keep rebounding and his production with the small minutes that he plays.”

After Thursday’s practice, though, Garnett said he wasn’t surprised at Williams’ ability.

“He hasn’t surprised me at all. He’s a hard worker. I knew that. He’s a blue-collar guy. When he sticks his nose in there it’s gonna be around the basket. He’s going to keep a lot of balls alive. I think his jump shot is 15 foot range, if not deeper than that. That’s been a bit of a surprise. I haven’t seen a lot of Sheldon playing, actually. I haven’t played against him a lot, but the things I have seen he’s very solid at what he does.”

Williams was surprised to hear that. “I didn't know that,” he said. “For him to say something like that, it means a great deal. Obviously, he's one of the guys that's going to be a Hall of Fame guy. He's a guy who produces night in and night out, practice and games. He's intense every single play, every single moment. So a guy like that to come in here and say those things about me says a great deal.”

Needless to say, this is a new experience for the 6-9 forward. “It's the most appreciated I felt in my four-year career,” he said.

His experiences in Sacramento and Minnesota were brief and forgettable, but being cast off by Atlanta has really stuck with him. Not that he obsesses about it and not even that he’s sufficiently upset to make the Hawks pay for it Friday, but he still can’t understand. He had eight double-doubles his rookie season, and pulled down 94 rebounds in his final eight games. In his fifth game of the season he grabbed 15 boards and in his ninth he had a 20-13 double-double.

Yet, as the season proceeded, he feels he didn’t get a fair shot. “Honestly, I don't think so. I don't think there was a lot of consistency in my minutes. I played inconsistent minutes. I came close to a double-double more often than not. And then it goes all of a sudden from me playing minutes to not playing. Just like that. So I don’t think I was getting a fair shot.”

His playing time dropped from 18.7 minutes per game his rookie season to 11.5 before he was traded midway through the next.

Was it a case of the Hawks holding unreasonable expectations for him? “If that was the case, I wish it was said to me. There was no communication there. I had no idea what exactly they wanted. It was poor communication when I was there. I guess that's the way he (coach Mike Woodson) ran things there.”

Still, while there might be some hard feelings, Williams will not get derailed from his routine. “There were a couple of times when I played against them I would say so, but I just approach them as like another team on the schedule.

“I don't need those type of things to get me going. I come in, do the same routine, the same workouts. I do it before practice, during practice, after practice. I haven't changed a thing since I was a rookie. And I'm doing the same things I've done since I came into the league and now I'm just getting recognized for a lot of the stuff I'm doing because I'm getting consistent minutes.”

Around the rim

Brian Scalabrine is back from his bout with back spasms. Paul Pierce paid the price, requiring a bandage to close a Scal-inflicted wound …

Rivers was sorry to hear of Byron Scott’s dismissal in New Orleans.

Doc talks about Sheed taking 3’s, turnovers & what he looks for in box scores

By Brian Robb, CelticsHub.com @ November 12th, 1:52 pm Leave a reply »

Doc Rivers had his weekly interview with Dennis and Callahan over at WEEI this morning. A few interesting excerpts from their conversation about all things Celtics:

On Rasheed’s launching up 3 pointers at a historic rate:

It’s in the context of the offense, but I tell him and Eddie [House] every time they’re open to shoot it. Don’t hesitate. I’ll be the guy that will pull them back. Early on last night you could see Rasheed pass up a couple to get to the second option, which is something we want him to do. But we want him looking for it. We don’t want him thinking about shooting [too much.]

On what the team shoots for each game, turnover wise:

Right now it’s 14 for us. Because we’re trying to run a little more we figure they’ll be up. But if we can average 14 turnovers I can live with that.

On what key stats Doc looks for in a box score:

Field goal percentage for us is misleading because we count open shots. You do glance it, but we have our own stat on field goal percentage because it counts as open shots. Offensively, we know that is we miss 10 wide open shots we’re not upset by that. Obviously we want them to go in, but we know on average they will go in. It’s the same thing defensively. We’ve had games where the other team shot 41 percent and we look at the film and look at our own adjusted field goal percentage and we don’t like the game anymore.

Rebounding, turnovers and assists: those numbers don’t lie. That’s a number we always look at. Defensively, besides field goal percentage, we look at deflections, which they don’t put on the stat sheet. That’s really important. If our deflections are up, usually that means that we’re really active.

On what Doc thinks the team needs to work on, despite it’s 7-1 record:

The discipline, our pick and roll coverage had been slipping. Our transition D had been slipping. We didn’t close out the corner 3’s, and we’ve been giving up a ton of corner 3’s in the games before that. Offensively, really timing. Timing on the second and third options. I thought we were getting impatient offensively and taking quick, uncontested shots. We did a better job last night making the extra pass that led to the assist.

A few notes on Doc’s thoughts, after the jump:

First, the Wallace 3’s. Doc clearly went to bat for his player’s shot selection here and I tend to think that confidence will continue as long as the Celtics keep winning. One key quote though: “I’ll be the guy to pull them back” Doc at least acknowledging that possibility is as good as any Celtic fan can hope for. In the meantime, Doc wants Sheed to get comfortable in the context of the offense and if that involves him launching 3’s at will, so be it. No need to ruffle any feathers this early, if the C’s are winning.

 Re: The Turnovers

Doc wants 14 a game and so far the team is right at that pace, averaging 14.3/a game through 9 contests. My question after hearing that number, was how does 14 turnovers/game compare to the overall average in the league last year?

A quick inspection of the numbers tells me that 14 turnovers a game was exactly the league average out of all 30 teams last year. So Doc wants the C’s to be an average team as far as turnovers go, a far drop from their 3rd worst in the league ranking last year. My question to everyone, especially turnover resident expert Zach Lowe? Is this feasible with this team?

Re: The Box Score

I have to say, I like Doc’s methods here by adjusting percentages based on opener jumpers. When you have a great shooting team like the C’s, it’s knowing you are getting those kind of open looks over the course of the regular season which is more important than whether they are falling in a particular game. The deflections stat is an intriguing one too. All in all, good stuff from Doc.

Bower takes over as Hornets’ coach

Marc J. Spears By Marc J. Spears, 10 hours, 5 minutes ago

Struggling to stay competitive just two seasons after reaching the Western Conference semifinals, the New Orleans Hornets fired coach Byron Scott and replaced him with general manager Jeff Bower on Thursday.

The Hornets said Bower will be the full-time coach and there are no current plans to search for a replacement. Bower has never been a head coach on any level, but previously worked as an assistant for the Hornets.

Former Hornets coach Tim Floyd also is returning as an assistant coach. Floyd coached the Hornets during the 2003-04 season, going 41-41 before losing in the first round of the playoffs. Bower was an assistant on Floyd’s staff that season.

Floyd will be with the Hornets on Friday for their game against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Floyd “brings a teaching, strong defensive coach as well as a late-game technician,” Bower said in a phone interview. “His skills add a lot to our coaching staff and our team of players.”

Scott, whose firing was first reported by New Orleans’ The Times-Picayune, was dismissed after the Hornets started the season 3-6. Four of the team’s losses were by at least 16 points.

The Hornets also suffered a 58-point loss to the Denver Nuggets in the first round of last season’s playoffs, the biggest sign yet that the franchise had fallen from the ranks of the Western Conference’s elite.

Scott did not know of his impending dismissal when the Hornets flew back from Phoenix following Wednesday’s 124-104 loss, but had privately expressed concern to friends and peers about his job when the team struggled during the preseason. He also was concerned about the team’s overall talent level and some chemistry issues within the roster.

Hornets president Hugh Weber made it clear franchise officials disagreed with Scott’s assessment of what ailed the team.

“This isn’t about rebuilding, this is about recommitting,” Weber said during a news conference in New Orleans to announce the change. “We’ve known we’ve had confidence in our plans, we’ve known we’ve had confidence in our players.

“The way the problem was defined we don’t agree with. This isn’t an issue of trust or commitment [from the players]. This is an issue of execution.”

Weber said Hornets officials and Scott targeted areas for improvement during the offseason. The team also traded oft-injured center Tyson Chandler(notes) for Emeka Okafor(notes) to help stabilize the roster.

“We found the players we felt would help us compete at an elite level,” Weber said, “and yet the team is broken.”

The Hornets had, Weber said, “very specific, tactical goals that weren’t being achieved.”

Hornets forward David West(notes) told reporters in New Orleans there were “philosophical differences” between Scott and some players, and hinted that Scott might have become stubborn in his beliefs.

“Pride is a dangerous thing,” West said. “Amongst the team there was a sense of a few guys not trusting what we had in terms of our system and our ability to know what we were going to get every single night from our system.”

West played under Floyd during the 2003-04 season and said there would be a “dramatic difference” in transitioning from Scott to Bower and Floyd.

“We were way too predictable,” West said. “We worked way too hard to get simple stuff accomplished.

“What we had wasn’t working – the philosophy, the way we approached things just wasn’t working.”

League sources, however, maintain that point guard Chris Paul(notes) was not one of the players who had issues with Scott. Paul had remained loyal to Scott even during the team’s struggles.

“Chris Paul had nothing to do with it,” said one source close to the team.

Hornets officials told the players of the coaching change during a team meeting Thursday. Paul Pressey, Scott’s lead assistant, was demoted with the change. Floyd will be the top assistant under Bower. Scott’s son, Thomas, will remain the team’s video coordinator.

Scott was the NBA’s Coach of the Year in 2008 when he helped guide the Hornets to a 56-26 record. The Hornets came within a game of reaching the West finals that season.

League sources say Hornets owner George Shinn had encouraged Bower to take over as coach as far back as the summer.

Bower has been with the Hornets since 1995, serving as everything from an advance scout to assistant coach to general manager. He was promoted to GM in June 2001 then returned to the bench as an assistant under Floyd during the 2003-04 season.

Bower said he doesn’t whether he will coach the Hornets beyond this season.

“This plan is in place so all our attention will be focused on this team right now to change the results and change some of the habits that we have,” Bower said. “That’s where all our energy is.”

Weber said accountability was one of the biggest factors in deciding to have Bower coach. Bower built the Hornets’ roster and is now tasked with getting it to win.

“I told Jeff the genie is out of the bottle,” Weber said. “There’s no way he can say he doesn’t have the right players for the right reason. Jeff has hand-selected this team and we like the idea that now Jeff will be held accountable for results.”

Weber said the Hornets expect those results to improve – sooner rather than later.

“Our expectations are high, our sense of urgency is high,” Weber said. “Our patience is low.”

Rasheed Wallace on D&H 11/12 11.12.09 at 4:53 pm ET

By Ally Mielnicki

Celtics F/C Rasheed Wallace appeared on D&H this afternoon to talk about his love for the Kansas City Chiefs, how Kevin Garnett and the rest of the Big 3 recruited him to Boston, and his relationship with NBA referees.

Click here to listen to the full audio and read below for some highlights.

How did a guy who grew up in Philadelphia become a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs?

Well, being the black sheep of the family, everyone in my family was an Eagles‘ fan, so I always rooted for the other teams. Everyone: my aunts, uncles, cousins, my mom, my dad, my brothers, they all cheer for the Eagles so I had to go against the grain.

You like all the other Philadelphia teams though, you like the Flyers, you like the Phillies, but the Chiefs were your football team, huh?

Yep. You know, I’m always a fan  of individual players, but around about ’93, ‘94, when Joe Montana got traded to Kansas City, no one I knew was a Kansas City fan so I’ve been with them ever since.

There was a story on you in the Kansas City Star about your obsession with the Chiefs and the writer said, “Rasheed Wallace was holding a prosthetic leg,” or something like that. Why were you holding a prosthetic leg?

Well, a friend of mine is handicapped and at times when he’s had one too many beers, he gets to taking his leg off and he likes to throw it around and he tries to scare people. So, we just took his leg and put my Kansas City helmet on it and we took pictures of it.

Every now and then, we convince him to pop his leg off and try to scare people and once he did that, he’s pretty much playing keep away with it. He can’t chase it. So we got the leg and took pictures with it and everyone’s posing and stuff. It was fun though, it was all in fun.

When the Celtics made the trip out to recruit you, what was the message they brought that sold you on coming here?

Definitely by the Big 3 coming and Doc [Rivers] and the owner definitely telling me that they want me. That was a good process to me because I didn’t expect to see those three guys. It was definitely a surprise. My wife and I are both walking through the room and like, “Oh, what are you all doing here.” That kind of, sort of sent the message and I know not everyone on the team could come, but I think that those three represented the other players on the team.

If you could share anything [KG ] said that day, what was it?

The main thing he was telling me was Doc is a veterans’ coach. Of course, I played against Doc when he was on his way out. Over the years, I kind of became friends with Doc from the sideline. They were telling me, “Doc’s a veteran coach.” He doesn’t like to play his vets 40-plus minutes a night because you know that wears them down and you won’t have any legs at the end of the season to make that playoff run. And just other little things involving the team as far as the bench, guys on the team, the way they act, the way that they are and, that kind of coerced me to come over.

There was a play last night as there was a loose ball, you were going for it and one of the members of the Jazz was going for it and I’m holding my breath because I was afraid there’s going to be a big collision. At the very last minute, you tapped it off his chest as, “Thank you very much, we’ll move to the other end.” Did you know what you were going to do as you started towards that ball?

Oh yeah, definitely. I knew I couldn’t be beat him to that ball and be able to pick it up and start to break down to the other end, [Rajon] Rondo yelled my name and I just hit the ball off of him. I did the veteran thing.

You have some family in Dorchester. What [does your family] think of you being a Celtic?

Well, it’s cool. I guess it makes them better for them to cheer for me because they were cheering for me before when I was with the Pistons. Of course, coming to the game and sitting in the stands, they were getting funny looks when they cheer for me. Other than that, they pretty much like it now with Celtic green. It’s better for them and it’s better with their neighbors.

How does this team compare with the best teams you’ve been on in the past?

Really, I can’t make that comparison now because we are only about 8 or 9 games deep into the season, but this team definitely has the potential to be one of those great teams. We have young guys, they are willing to learn, they don’t give you no back flip and they don’t think they know everything. And then the veteran guys, of course, I don’t have to say too much about them. Everyone here, they want to win, they’re willing to win, they’re willing to learn how to win and no one places their ego in front of the team.

How important is it to you personally and the team as a group to be the best defensive team in the NBA?

It’s real important. One of my things is defense wins championships, offense sells tickets. I don’t think we’re having any problems with trying to sell tickets with the guys on the team, so defense is definitely going to win championships.

I saw a basketball website and the name of it is, “Ball don’t lie,” which is a Rasheed original. When they call a foul on Rasheed, and then the guy goes to the line and he misses, [Wallace] says, “Ball don’t lie.”

It doesn’t necessarily have to be me fouling. It could be someone on the team when there is an unjust call and they go to the line for two and, “Boink, boink” they miss them, so that ball don’t lie. People try to take it and run with it, but with me being from Philadelphia, we’re trend-setters, so I’m not worried about or upset that the guy got that website.

Can you name two or three officials that you really like and they like you and you have a pretty respectable relationship?

Tom Washington, believe it or not Joe Crawford. Joe’s my man. He’s like the boxing referee Mills Lane. I always think of Joe Crawford with that. Joe Crawford’s a good guy.

Why do you think you’ve always had so many issues with refs?

Because I don’t fall for the stupid star calls. I let them know what it is. If it is a foul that I know I committed, then I’ll politely raise my hand, “Yeah, I committed that foul.” But, if it’s some kind of ticky-tack stuff, then of course I’ve got to express my opinion.

I know you said on media day that your wife had some suggestions for you to act with the officials, be nicer to them and you tried it for a while, but it didn’t work out?

Oh, definitely, she said, “When they’re smart when they call a bad call, just smile and do this and that.” One time when I was with the Pistons, we were playing in Cleveland and [Zydrunas] Ilgauskas and [Anderson] Varejao they tried to hurt me, they fouled me hard and we all fell to the ground. So I’m laughing, “Ha ha, you all tried to hurt me, but couldn’t,” and I got a tech for it. I’m like, “How did I get a tech? I’m the one who got fouled.” So, it’s all part of it. I’m not worried about it no more.

Is there an outside limit to your range?

No, not really to be honest.

Doc said, “He has the green light. When he wants to shoot, he can shoot.”

I think that’s coming from part of the veteran leadership because Doc knows I’m pretty much a smart basketball player. Of course, I’m not saying I don’t take dumb shots sometimes, but I try to limit them as much as I can.

How do you pronounce your name?

Rasheed. Like Rah-sheed.

Super Smash Brothers

D-Wade vs. LeBron

D-Wade vs. LeBron

You know you pulled off an incredible dunk when your team doesn’t even win the game, you lost to a team that features arguably the best/most famous (active) basketball player in the world and one of the two other most famous players in the world, the dunk itself happened way back in the first quarter of an East Coast tip-off, and it’s STILL the first everybody is talking about around the water cooler. A few minutes into Heat/Cavs, LeBron looked like he was gonna put somebody on a poster when he got a step on his defender and approached the rim with bad intentions. LBJ got stuffed by Jermaine O’Neal, though, creating a one-man fast break for Dwyane Wade. With ‘Bron trailing a little too far behind, Wade got to the paint and elevated on Anderson Varejao, went chest-to-chest and flushed home a banger that sent Varejao crashing into the basket support heels-over-head. The Heat bench turned into an Omega Psi Phi party, then Wade punctuated the dunk with an ice cold step-over. Dunk of the Year so far, with all due respect to Travis Outlaw … The Cavs were ahead most of the night, and took control about midway through the third quarter. Wade (36 pts, 15-21 FT) hit a couple threes in the fourth to get a Miami rally going, but LeBron (34 pts, 16-18 FT, 7 asts) and Mo Williams (25 pts, 5-7 3PA) always had an answer to keep it out of reach … We had a Dorell Wright sighting. Marv Albert tried to say he and the announce crew had talked to Erik Spoelstra about Wright before the game, but we’re not buying it. Dorell Wright’s bill collectors don’t even ask about Dorell Wright … It wasn’t as blatant as New York, but LeBron was being covertly courted in Miami. Not even because Michael Jordan was in the building — MJ was already in town for the launch of the Air Jordan 2010 with Wade — but Penny Hardaway and Scottie Pippen just happened to be there as well. Even the annnouncers figured the MJ/Pip thing was a subliminal message to Wade and LeBron that they should team up, and ‘Bron has said before that Penny was his favorite player growing up … The TNT studio guys were clowning the Sammy Sosa skin-lightening thing at halftime of the Heat game, which led to Charles Barkley having light makeup put on his face as a gag. “I’m tired of being pulled over for Driving While Black!” Barkley laughed. Nah, Chuck, that’s not why you got stopped. YOU got pulled over trying to watch Dome Alone on your, uh, headrest … It’s like Kobe Bryant didn’t even make a gradual transition into this new phase of his career, did he? People talk about Jordan slowly changing his game from high-flyer to smart and balanced scorer, and then again to a guy who played in the post and relied heavily on his turnaround jumper. With Kobe, it’s like he just decided this summer that he was going to be the world’s most skilled power forward, and two weeks into the season he’s leading the NBA in points in the paint … Last night, Kobe — or as Barkley calls him, “Kobeh Braaahnt” — was killing the Suns from his new favorite spot, scoring 29 points (13-21 FG) in a blowout of one of the early surprise teams in the West. Giving Jason Richardson buckets on one end and locking J-Rich (5 pts) down on the other, Kobe took out Phoenix’s X-factor and exposed their defense. Throw in Andrew Bynum (26 pts, 15 rebs, 3 blks) dominating the paint when Kobe wasn’t there, and the Suns didn’t have a chance … Did Doug Collins really call Lamar Odom’s wife an “actress” with a straight face? Actress? Is that what they’re calling it now? So the crazy guy who mumbles disgusting things at the girls on the F train every morning, is he a stand-up comedian now? … With the firing of Byron Scott in New Orleans, we’re officially past the stage in the season where coaches can use the excuse of his players needing to get used to each other. Having a (kind of) new-look roster wasn’t enough to save Scott’s job, and he’s coming off consecutive playoff appearances in the West. Who do you think is the next coach to get fired mid-season? We’re looking at you, Lawrence Frank … We’re out like Khloe’s Golden Globe award …

I'm with you also. I hate Byron because he hates Boston and those nasty things
he said about even playing on road in Boston. Screw him.

Funny how we were excited when the Jazz signed both him and Boozer a few years
back. Now I can't wait til they are both off this team. This franchise is so
scared of change but if they would just get rid of those two players, euthanize
Sloan and not botch the NY pick we would be a legitemate team.

Sheldon is more of what we lost in Leon Powe. Davis gives us some bulk and can
give us the mid range jumper to keep the defense honest. I'd like to have both.

Well, there's really not much to say about this one. It won't be pretty.

I think we win, a very frustrating win.

Jazz by 8, book it. Jazz always win these games.

Rondo is gonna eat DWill alive

Well here comes another ass whooping for sloan Win or lose sloan must be fired

Doc Rivers will make Sloan look like a total clown.

I hope Boston hasn't heard of the zone defense.

I'm not thinking win or loss here. I'm trying to decide if the Jazz will reach 70 points.

Boston is tough, and this will be their first game in 4 days. I expect them to come out fresh and super energetic on defense. Plus, it's a home game. I don't see Jazz winning

KG and whoever is filling in at the C position, as well as the PF position, will have career nights in blocks. Boozer is a complete puss-weed when it comes to big men who can actually man up.

Jazz drop this one in amazing fashion, losing by 50.

We should win easily. New York and Sacramento's defense is better than their's, I'm sure.

Utah jazz where useless players get put to use happens

Jazz win this one going away. I hope...

Jazz will not win this game. I wish I could say they would but I know they won't. They aren't playing like a team that can go in and beat this Celtics team on their home floor. Hell, the Jazz have a hard enough time defending their home floor against the Kings.

Don't kid yourselves gents. This one is going to be a Boston massacre. We will be running from the arena with our tails between our legs.

F healthy, the Celtics are going to be 2010 champs. They're our worst nightmare right now. Size, athleticism, and shooting. Everything we have, they have a counter for. This is going to be a rough game.

I've come to love Rondo. The guy plays with a chip on his shoulder but he has veterans all around him to keep him in line. Jazz need more of that.

Boston by 83

There's always the chance that Boston will come into the game confident and underestimate our scrubs. Probably not, but I think it's the only chance we've got.

We've all seen games where the Jazz were supposed to destroy teams because they were missing all their good players (cough Sacramento cough) and then the Jazz lose. Well, it's time for some payback. Jazz by 5 tonight!

If there's No D-Will = any interest likely GONE.

So, I take it you're not the type that likes to stare at the scene of a bad car accident?

Memo has to be legally retarded. The guy is a total moron. The ball falls out of his hands and he's literally still looking for it while the ball is in the freakin' hoop

Boozer and Memo just beyond worthless.

You can tell Boston is in a league completely up and above us. The way they run their plays, talk and communicate on the floor looks foreign to a Jazz fans eyes.

This games being poorly reffed on both ends thus far.

Boston is doin a **** job of boxing us out. Too bad we can't stop them on defense.

When you have to double Kendrick Perkins you know you're in trouble.

Wonder why Boston didn't play any zone that 1st half.

They don't even need to. They're on another level. They can do whatever they want.

Why did we ever extend fat a$$ Okur? He is absolutely worthless. Funny how we were excited when the Jazz signed both him and Boozer a few years back. Now I can't wait til they are both off this team. Good, we'll be 3-5 after this. Well on our way to two great lottery picks.

Do people still think Rondo is getting overpaid?

Seldon Williams is dominating Boozer. Someone needs to see if Jerry is awake on the bench or if he is even paying attention.

This team couldn't even keep it respectable. I mean the Celtics can't be that much better than us. We don't even have the excuse that DWill was hurt... He played over 30 minutes.

You guys can't be THAT mad, we all knew it would end like this, whether it happened in the 2nd quarter or in the 4th quarter, this team has no business playing in Boston

This franchise is so scared of change but if they would just get rid of those two players, euthanize Sloan and not botch the NY pick we would be a legitemate team.

Yep. With "Coach K" , it is on a comparison with the best- Coach Dean Smith Carolina ; Coach Calhoun UConn ; Coach Bob Knight ; Coach John Wooden--and more of these gentlemen, who make D1 college basketball the fine activity that it is. (AND OF COURSE, don't leave out the 'recruiting' feats that each of these programs generate'  Also there are great coach/programs in d2 ball, and even d3.

I am so glad that the Cs "dispatched" the fine Utah team like they did. There are some great players in that team--Deron Williams ; Boozer (Dukie?) ; AK ; etc ; and their coach Jerry Sloan-one of the very best, & Hall Of Fame (I watched him inducted).

This player Shelden, has shown me all I needed to know. What I didunt know (and still don't), was why he was playing like he did at 2 other league teams, to include Atlanta. "This NorthCarolinian" (me) , knew better stuff about Shelden Williams-at Duke, in the ACC.

I figure since Davis sits with a broken thumb for awhile that Shelden will come in in a rotation-there , and even maybe be better than Davis-in different ways.  Thoughts ??

Now we are back to having Dvis and Powe (Williams) who seems like an adequate
replacement for Leon.

** The Celtics host Atlanta tomorrow night, and Shelden Williams will certainly be up for the game. Atlanta took Williams with the fifth pick of the 2006 draft, but gave up on him. Williams can only hope that tomorrow being Friday the 13th and he wearing No. 13 turn out to be a good combination. ** (Doyle/Telegram)

Thoughts ??
