Hi all,

I am planning a trip this Friday to Hike from Burnsville to the Summit of
Mount Mitchell. This will be an overnight hike and the goal is to reach the
Summit by Sunrise for a great show. If you are interested please let me
know ASAP and we will coordinate the trip. Then some mountain biking for
those who can't get enough.

-Craig

Odyssey Adds One-Day Race to Its 2000 Schedule

After two sold-out Odyssey One-Day Adventure Races this season, we are
pleased to announce the addition of another 24-hour race in the Blue Ridge
Mountains on October 7- 8. Registration begins immediately and is first come,
first served. Up to 70 solo, 2-person and 4-person teams will be accommodated.

Starting in Big Island, VA, racers will face grueling climbs and breathtaking
descents on mountain bikes; trek through lush forests and mountain vistas;
paddle through class II-III whitewater, and enjoy a non-technical climbing
section. At 80+ miles, the race is short in comparison to other adventure
races, but is by no means an easy competition. "Mile for mile, this is the
toughest course we have in any of our races," said race director and Odyssey
founder, Don Mann. Past races have notoriously high dropout rates due to the
difficulty. This fact adds to the challenge and is what encourages many
athletes to sign up. The October date should provide beautiful fall foliage
and cooler weather, making the Odyssey One-Day Race a great competition for
adventure racers of all experience levels.

Hello all,
There was a good piece on National Public Radio's Morning Edition about
"Hard Leisure" including references to the growth of trail running, rock
climbing and adventure racing. Very nice interviews with Team Vail.

Listen to it at:
http://search.npr.org/cf/cmn/cmnps05fm.cfm?SegID=75977

This segment is from the Wednesday, June 28, 2000 Morning Edition
Hard Leisure NPR's Renee Montagne has the last of Morning Edition's
Changing Face of America series on leisure.
She reports that more and more Americans are involved in leisure that
pushes their bodies and minds to the limit. In
Vail, Colorado, summer tourists are rafting down the Colorado River at
night with night vision goggles, and recreational runners are climbing
10-thousand foot Vail Mountain for fun. (8:24)

Hey all,

Some great news. I have been able to secure the paddling class on July 1st
and 2nd for adventure racing for $100 per day. This is a two day course and
it is going to be taught two instructors; probably Norm Greenberg and Tracyn
Thayer. This should be a great class. Please let me know if you are
interested and can go. So far I have six people that will be attending.
The more people that can go, the cheaper the rate will be. Included is all
the gear plus lunch on both days. The only thing you will need to bring is
your bathing suite.

Second, we are in dire need of two individuals to participate on a team for
the Atlanta Hi-Tec Adventure Race (http://www.mesp.com) . The race is this
weekend, specifically Sunday. Please contact me for more information ASAP.
This would be a great opportunity to get into adventure racing.

Hey Guys,

Here's some more information on the Rocky Gap Adventure Race. Is anyone
thinking of doing this? BTW, I are there anymore people interested in doing
the Paddling Clinic July 1st and 2nd?

Subject: Rocky Gap Adventure Race

Hello everyone,
This message is to inform all of you that registration has began
for
the race, and that applications are coming in. We will only be allowing
100
teams to enter, so try and prevent the last minute entries, and insure
your
team a spot. We have been working on finalizing the race course, and it
is
going to be great!! The terrain, remoteness, and even the wildlife will

make this an event that will change single day adventure races forever.
We
would love to be able to tell you more about each leg of the race, but
to
keep it a true "adventure race", it has to be kept secret.
All of our sponsors have been locked down, and they include:
Adventure
Sports, Rocky Gap Lodge, DNR, Mountain Dew, Aquafina, Kinetix health
club,
Fredrick Brewing co., Trek, Johnny Jacks, Salomon, and many others. The

sponsors are all donating prizes that will make for some great
awards/giveaways. Rocky Gap Lodge & Golf Resort will be giving Two
Night
Adventure Packages to their resort as prizes for some of the winning
teams, and there are also rumors of a potential cash purse that
might be donated by one of our sponsors. However, we won't know for
sure until some other details are ironed out.
Rocky Gap Lodge will be cooking the food for the pre race dinner on Fri.
(their chefs are excellent) There will be tons of raffled prizes
and give-a-ways so that all of the athletes have a chance to win
something cool. During the race there will be entertainment, and some
of
the best micro brew beer around (so bring your friends and family).
Before and after the awards there will be a party sponsored by the
Fredrick Brewing co., Johnny Jacks BBQ house, and the Potomac Blues
Society. With the course designed to be very spectator
friendly, there will be fun and entertainment for everyone.
We are sending 2 attachments along with this message; one is the
race
flyer with all of the updated sponsor info., and the other is the
application for the race. There is also information available on-line
at
http://www.adventuresportsinc.com . Once there click on the events page
for
race info. Fill out the application, and mail it in to the address at
the
bottom of the app. Once we receive, and process it, a list of final
rules
and medical questionnaire/waivers will be mailed out.
We have had a lot of questions in reference to the swim. We are

mandating that all racers wear a coast guard approved PFD during the
swim.
The state requires that PFD's be worn during the boating portion, so we
carried that requirement over to the swimming leg as well. So if you
are not
a strong swimmer, don't worry. Also the orienteering leg will require
basic
orienteering skills (bring your own compasses), but will encompass
challenging terrain.
We hope to you see everyone in August, if you have any further
questions,
please call 301-689-0345.
In parting, we have had some interest expressed in the
development of a
longer event locally. We are seriously interested in helping to
build/support the growth of adventure racing in this region. If you
would
be interested in racing in a 24 to 48 hour event, please email back with
any
comments. Thanks!!!
Sincerely,
Josh & Shane

Hey all,

Here is a good sprint style race to get your feet wet. Check for
specifics on Sunday's race and Saturday's Adventure Expo. Plan to spend
the weekend with family and friends. Local motels have special
rates. There's a mandatory racers' meeting on Saturday, September 16 at
4pm, followed by an optional Dominator Devour: an all-you-can-eat great
way to meet fellow competitors. Registration is limited to the first 130
teams.

Andrea,

A great place to start is to look into a race that interests you. Then figure
out what it takes to do it. There are people here on this list as well as
people on the ARA list which is international that would be able to tell you
what it would take. Sprint style races are a great place to start. They only
last around 4-6 hours and they definitely get your feet wet. Although it is a
different racing style than a multiday race, you will find that they are a great
way to get into the sport. Not to mention the mini-triathlons, like the one in
Asheville this weekend. Finding people that would want to race with you
shouldn't be a problem. That's what this list is for. :-) I've trained with
Adam some and I definitely think he could show you some great places to train
around the Asheville area, not to mention we were planning on doing an overnight
nonstop Mount Mitchell trip this summer. Anyone interested?

Also, you may want to think about doing some training classes in orienteering,
paddling, ropes, mountain biking, etc.. The Nantahala Outdoor Center
(http://www.noc.com.adventure.htm) is a great place to learn these skills.
Myself and Holly MacSweeney just got back from doing a full day of Ropes
training with Norm Greenberg (http://www.racingahead.com). I cannot recommend
Norm Greenberg and his wife Tracyn enough. They have a very extensive and
impressive history in this sport and they're programs are certainly worth
attending.

In fact I am in the process of organizing a paddling class with either Norm or
Tracyn July the 1st and 2nd. Let me know if anyone is interested and would like
to go. The main goal for this is to get certified in paddling for the longer
races. The cost is around $250 for the two days per person and should go down,
the more people I get to join Holly and myself. I can also look into getting
them to throw in room and lunches for the two days too.

-Craig

biking and kind of running. I could use some work in paddling and
navigation. Drop me an email if you're interested.

Oh yeah.... Is there anyone else on this list in the Asheville area who
would like to get together too?

***Here is an excerpt from the local Triangle Area Orienteering Club****

"The event this Sunday will be on the I-40 side of Umstead Park, at the Reedy
Creek Picnic Area. You can register as early as
Noon, and we will have a beginners class at 12:30.

There will be a regular beginners White course, but for all the more advanced
courses we will have a "Score O" with a time limit
of one hour.

In a "Score O" all the controls are on your map, and each is given a point value
depending on how difficult it is. You have one
hour to decide which controls to punch and to punch as many as you can in any
order. If you get back late you are penalized for
overtime.

We like to do "Score O" when it is hot so no one needs to stay out longer than
one hour."

Go for it Andrea.
If I could compete myself, I would, but unfortunately, I tore my achilles
tendon, and have been out of commission. Hopefully back in commission in a
couple of months. Just as Craig said, women are definitely an asset to this
racing.

Hello Andrea,

The fact that you are female, does matter. There aren't too many females in
this sport yet. So there are always teams looking for female racers. You would
definitely fit on a team not only because you are a female, physically able, but
you appear to have the mental fortitude to race as well.

Thanks Brad for the 411.

Here's a little update I just got from the RD of the The Rocky Gap Adventure Race:

The Rocky Gap Adventure Race will be August 26, 2000 at
Rocky Gap State Park (13 mile East of Cumberland, MD) It is open to 2 & 3
person teams, co-ed and single sex. The event involves swimming, cycling,
canoeing, trail running/orienteering, and team challenges -- it should last 5
- 10 hours. Information is available at www.adventuresportsinc.com (the site
is still being built, but the race info is available and we will keep people
posted of updates. Or via email adventuresports@... and/or phone
301-689-0345.

Anyone interested in doing it?

Craig,
adventure racing is on the front page of the Wall street Journal today.  Actually the competition between Mark Burnett and the folks at the Beast.  You may want to check it out.

Hey all,

I saw this and I had to share.  I realize it's not in the area but I knew it
this type of race was inevitable.  What do you think?

Hey all,

Well I have a few minor changes and one big comment to make. First, I have
moved the list from listbot.com to egroups.com. Egroups.com is a much better
site to work with.

http://www.egroups.com/group/CarolinaAdventureRacers

Then I also wanted to mention that there is a guy that I spoke with and he is
trying to get out of the Eco-Challenge. (see attached) He is offering his spot,
for just the entry fee of 12k. Anyone want to get a team together?
http://www.ecochallenge.com/borneo/borneo.htm

-Craig
Yes, but I'm actually looking for an entire team to take my spot (since my
team can't go this year).

Can you get a team together? The registration fee is $12,000.

Thanks!

Hey all,

I just got some information on a new race coming up:

(excerpt from an email I received)

"It will be built to challenge the weekend warrior,
as well as the seasoned athlete. The people working on the course have
a history of racing since the 80's. They know what it takes to put on a
quality event, and how to challenge the athletes.
During the race there will be music, and food in a festive type
setting. After the race there will be a party hosted by Fredrick
Brewing Company. There will also be prizes raffled off to the entire
race field."

Hey All,

RiverMonth is coming in June of 2000, with the Fourth Annual RiverLink
Run-Paddle-Bike Triathlon on Sunday morning, June 4. Also, they'll be having
a brand new outdoor festival with music, food, a silent auction, and more on
Saturday, June 17--one of there biggest and best events ever on the river!
Want more information? Contact Donna DeLuca, event coordinator, at
RiverEvents@... <mailto:RiverEvents@...> or 828-250-0906. SEE YOU ON
THE RIVER!
It's supposed to be around a 5k run, 4mile kayak down the French Broad, and
a 12-15mile Road ride... ( I think a Mountain Bike w/ Slicks will be just
fine).

You can do this individually or in a team.

Results from May 7 event

The results for the May 7 event are now posted complete with a large album
of pictures from the event at http://treklite.com/bok/news/event-00-05.htm

=====================================================
Next Event: June 4, Score "O"

The next event is June 4, at Umstead Park South, Enter from I-40, Harrison
Avenue, and follow our signs to the main parking area. Be sure to follow
the signs, we may use a slightly different starting point.

At this event we will have our regular beginners introductory class at 12:30
and offer a White Course for beginners, but for the other courses we will
have a Score "O".

At a Score "O", instead of having a fixed course that you follow, you are
presented with the complete set of controls, and you can visit as many as
you choose in any order. Each control is given a particular point value
depending on its difficulty. The time on the course is limited to about an
hour, and points are deducted for each minute you are overtime. The courses
are designed so that the fastest runner shouldn't be able to quite finish
the course.
