After many requests, AR Navigation Supplies has just released the
first volume of its Table Top Adventure Race and Navigation Challenge
books. Think of this book as Sudoku for navigators. The book is
designed to allow navigators to practice and improve their navigation
skills while at home, in the office or traveling. All you need is a
Compass, UTM tool and a pencil and you're ready for a table top
adventure that will test your skills and improve your navigation
regardless of your current expertise. The book contains 12 separate
navigation challenges covering 8 different states from New York to
California using USGS 1:24,000 scale maps. The goal is to find your
way around each map by following the rules of travel, plotting the
route and answering the questions presented for each CP. If you get
lost there is a help section that will guide you through the common
navigation techniques and adventure racing terms to get you back on
track.
Challenge your friends to the table top competition and see who should
be the team navigator at the next race, it may surprise you.
For all the details on the Navigation Challenges and a preview of the
first volume follow the link below.

THE 9TH RUNNING OF THE MIDWEST'S PREMIER ADVENTURE RACE SET FOR SEPTEMBER
26TH
Bonk Hard Racing, LLC is excited to announce that the ninth running of the
Berryman Adventure will be taking place the weekend of September 26th. The
Berryman Adventure - presented by The North Face - always draws top teams
from across the U.S. because of its true backwoods setting and top
competition.
The race is set in the rugged and beautiful Mark Twain National Forest and
Ozark National Scenic Riverways of southern Missouri. The 2009 course is
completely new and will offer racers miles and miles of single track trails,
beautiful crystal-clear rivers and steep, rugged terrain; the Berryman
Adventure is what adventure racing is all about.
The race will offer two courses: a 12-Hour course and a 36-Hour course. Both
courses will once again reinforce the motto of the race, "a real ass
kicker", but the 36-Hour course will continue to be one of the toughest
non-expedition races in the United States. Teams must be extremely
proficient with a map and compass and should not show up unprepared. The
36-Hour course is the closest you can get to a mini-expedition race and
teams should not take it lightly.
This race is by-far one of the cheapest races in the U.S., with a $170 early
registration fee for 36-Hours of true backwoods adventure racing.
With prizes like North Face tents and sleeping bags, Salomon XT Wing trail
shoes, great gear from Columbia Sportswear, Numa Sport Optic sunglasses,
Kuat bike racks and a TON of great prizes from regional outdoor stores like
Alpine Shop, you will not want to miss this year's race!
This Berryman Adventure 36-Hour 4-Person Coed Elite division will once again
be a Regional Qualifier for the USARA National Championships race as well as
a part of the Checkpoint Tracker Adventure Racing Series.
Get your team together today and come see for yourself why the Berryman
Adventure has the slogan "a real ass kicker!"

Salomon shoes, Kuat bike racks, Numa Sport Optics sunglasses and a ton of
fantastic prizes from our presenting sponsor, Columbia Sportswear, winning
teams will have a tough time deciding what prize they want. We will also be
drawing random teams from a hat at the awards ceremony to choose prizes as
well.

Racing National Championships and also a part of the 2009 Checkpoint Tracker

Need a break? How about an Adventure Race in Costa Rica ? The Active
Arenal Volcano is the host for this year's 7th Edition of the 24 Hours
of Costa Rica . The race starts at 9am on Saturday the 6th of
December from the town of La Fortuna .
As in past years, Teams of 2, 3 and 4 will compete on one of 2
different routes. The Pro route will be 150 + kms and it is unlikely
that any team will finish in less than 24 hours. The Sport route is
challenging but won't be as long (less than 90kms) and should take
less than the 24 hours to complete. The Sport route is definitely a
challenge but has been designed to be more enjoyable rather than grueling.
Disciplines during the race include mountain biking, trekking, sea
kayaking, canopy traversing and some fun navigating.
We still have room for more teams so if you and your team are
interested in a bit of an escape to the tropics let us know – we would
love to have you join the fun
We have put together a couple of race itineraries – an 8 day trip
including a couple of days of rafting on the Pacuare before the race
and a 6 day escape down to Costa Rica for the 24 hour Race. Coast to
Coast Adventures is a full service travel agency so organizing a trip
for family and friends or adding a few days on the beach after the
race are all possibilities.

Adventure On!
Here is the race report from the fantastic NORCAL-AR #4 event in Whiskeytown, CA last weekend. Thanks to everyone for all the hard work that went into making this race one of the highlights of the 2008 racing season and especially to Rich Brazeau for putting on a great series of races in Northern California.
Hello Adventure Racers! The 8th running of the Berryman Adventure is set to
take place this weekend, September 27-28. We have over 230 racers from over
20 states making the trip to Missouri to take on the 36-Hour and 12-Hour
courses.
The Berryman Adventure is one of the last races in the Checkpoint Tracker
Series, and a few of the teams at the race have their sights set on the top
prize and winning the Series. To follow all the action online this weekend
using Checkpoint Tracker, please visit the Berryman Adventure website at
http://www.theberrymanadventure.com. You will see a link to Checkpoint
Tracker on the homepage.
We hope you can join us online and watch the race unfold!

We've spent a long time searching for a kayak computer and have
finally found one that works for adventure racing. The SpeedCoach
kayak computer measures and displays real time speed, average speed,
distance as well as stroke rate. All the data is stored in memory for
analysis after the event. This is an excellent aid for open water
navigation and helps by keeping track of distance traveled, speed etc
while you just focus on paddling and following a bearing. Its also
great for training by showing and storing stroke rate, speed and
average speed, allowing you to compare and analyze each workout. Its
as simple to use as a bike computer, mounts without any holes and
doesn't use GPS making it race legal.
More information can be found at:
http://www.arnavsupplies.com/product_pages/kayak_navigation/SpeedCoach.html
We have also added the new kayak sail from WindPaddle. This
lightweight and easily deployed downwind sail clips to the deck of any
kayak or canoe and provides downwind propulsion so as you don't have
to paddle. The sail is easy to stow and folds flat on the deck in
seconds. There are no modifications to the kayak required. Follow
the link below for pictures and video of the new sail in use.

THE 8TH RUNNING OF THE BERRYMAN ADVENTURE RETURNS ON SEPTEMBER 27TH
Bonk Hard Racing, LLC is excited to announce that the eighth running of the
Midwest's Premier Adventure Race, the Berryman Adventure, will once again be
hosted in the rugged and beautiful Mark Twain National Forest and Ozark
National Scenic Riverways of southern Missouri. Offering racers miles of
single track trails, beautiful crystal-clear rivers and steep, rugged
terrain, the Berryman Adventure is backwoods adventure racing at its best!
The Berryman Adventure will offer two courses; a 12-Hour course and a
36-Hour course. Both courses will once again reinforce the motto of the
race, "a real ass kicker", but the 36-Hour course will continue to be one of
the toughest shorter races in the United States. Teams must be extremely
proficient with a map and compass and expect to paddle some of the most
beautiful rivers in the Midwest.
Jennifer Shultis of Team Eastern Mountain Sports, the 2007 winners of the
36-Hour course, had this to say about the race on their blog on
checkpointzero.com:
"...nobody was more surprised than I was when I suddenly exclaimed, 'I could
live here,' while paddling down a beautiful spring fed river, 10 hours into
the race. But I must admit, it's a great state. The rivers are almost
turquoise when the light hit them, the forests are beautiful and open for
running, the people are so nice everywhere you go and just wait until you
see the size of the cinnamon rolls they bake!"
This year's 36-Hour 4-Person Coed elite division will once again be a
Regional Qualifier for the USARA National Championships race, to be held in
Georgia this November, as well as a part of the Checkpoint Tracker Adventure
Racing Series.
Early registration ends on Friday, July 11th! This is by-far one of the
cheapest races in the U.S., with a $175 early registration fee for 36-Hours
of racing! Registration includes land use fees, high quality MyTopo.com
maps, canoes, paddles and PFDs, insurance, branded performance shirts by
Columbia's high-performance Titanium brand of apparel, pre-race pasta meal,
post-race food and drinks, some fantastic prizes (including Garmin
Forerunners and Garmin Edge, Salomon shoes, North Face tents and much
more!), give-a-ways, Checkpoint Tracker usage and one fantastic adventure!
You will not want to miss the 8th running of the Midwest's premier adventure
race! Get your team together today and come see why the Berryman Adventure
is called, "a real ass kicker!"

August this year is the month for our Annual Pacuare Adventure Race.
It is the perfect race for teams wishing to visit Costa Rica for an
Adventure Race and being just a long weekend, a great way to test out
your skills in the tropics.
The Pacuare Race is one of the highlights of Adventure Racing Costa
Rica race calendar and we see a broad spectrum of teams, from very
experienced Pros to those in the Sport section who are either training
themselves for longer races, or maybe just want to come and enjoy this
spectacular area, while facing some interesting and sometimes amusing
challenges. Whichever category suits your team, you will find out
more about the race at www.adventureracingcostarica.com.
We often have international teams who can spare a little extra time
and come down a few days early to acclimatize. If this works for you,
then we can put a package together to make the most of your time and
see some of the sights while honing your skills ready for the race.
Enrollment is open and filling up with both local and international
teams – we look forward to adding your team name!!

Let me take a moment to second Roy's comments.
This will be my fourth Coast to Coast. I keep thinking it is my last
and then spring rolls around and I just can't stand the idea of of all
that suffering going on without me!
Mike and Pablo do a terrific job both planning the race and making
sure all the teams have the best experience possible. Make no mistake
though, this is racing in a raw form. This one will hurt. You will
need team work, help from the locals, some ingenuity and the ability
to go up hill... again and again...
Unlike the circus of big expedition races (I did XPD Australia in
August) this is a small non-commercial race. It is AR in pure form.
You start with one foot in the Atlantic and finish with the other foot
in the Pacific. What happens in between have been some of the
highest... and lowest, points of my 10 years in AR.
The local teams are terrific athletes and the people of Costa Rica are
fantastic. If you can get on a plane Pablo will see to the rest of it.
My highlights:
Standing on the rim of Volcan Turrialba (11,000 feet) at sunset.
Rafting the Pacuare
The church bells in Cartago at dawn
Arenal erupting at night
It's hot, it's cold, the maps are completely out of date and the fire
ants are waiting... it doesn't get better than this.
Tom Smith
Hi .......,
This year's Coast to Coast Challenge is going to be the best ever!
We already have a number of international and local teams signed up
but I know from recent e mails that there are still some teams that
need that last bit of encouragement to come and take part.
I guess most of you are by now fed up of hearing from me and so I am
really grateful to Roy Malone who was in the 2007 winning team (Team
Bones) who has written something from a racer's point of view. We
appreciate his honesty and I think this will make the difference to
those who are 'almost' signed up!!
So please take a few minutes to read through his e mail and the link
to his report of last year's race, and then come and meet Team Bones
in the flesh and take up the challenge of competing against them in
April.
I will be waiting for you e mails,

I wanted to send out a quick plug for this race.
While it is the 8th edition of this race, it is still a very grass-
roots expedition in a very cool location. Extremely well organized
and thought out, it will challenge beginner and veteran teams
alike. We raced it last year and are going back for seconds.
Priced well at $3,500/ team, it includes meals, lodging, and all
transportation once in Costa Rica, the only other expense is airfare
($600 from California).
Last year's highlights:
Beach run in 95 degrees
Jungle travel with tarantulas the size of your hand
A Jaguar sighting (Jason Quinn swears it was not a hallucination!)
Epic, class III whitewater rafting
Midnight kayaking through Mangrove canals, with the red eyes of
crocs watching from the bank
Cat-sized frogs flying from the bottom of the river, over the bows
of our boats
Iguanas everywhere, billions of birds
I've raced all four Primal Quests, Eco Challenge, Explore Sweden,
South Africa, Scotland, Southern Traverse, Eco Motion, and would put
this race in the top three. The 51 hour trekking leg was absolutely
outstanding- personally, the best trek in a race.
For anyone who raced Eco Challenge Fiji; the Tico locals are just as
friendly, just as accommodating as the Fijians. Willing to open up
the doors to their homes and cook a warm meal at 2:00 AM to a bunch
of stinky strangers.
This is NOT an easy race. Navigation can be tricky (it's been a
long time since maps have been revised in Costa Rica) and it's a
true expedition- you are relying on your teammates!! Anyone looking
at a raw, non-commercialized, challenging experience, I highly
recommend this race.
Timing-wise, it's also a perfect tune up for Primal Quest Montana.
Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions about it.

Costa Rica's wild lands and friendly people will play host to this
year's 8th edition of the Coast to Coast Challenge. With just 2
months to the start of the race, the route is set and we are excited
to see how teams will fare.
For the 3rd time in the 8 year history of the race it will begin on
the Caribbean side (Hotel Punta Cocles) and finish on the Central
Pacific side of the country at Hotel Playa Bejuco.
The first stage of the race starts and ends at Hotel Punta Cocles –
a mini race to get things started. The key to this stage will be to
acclimatize and stay safe in anticipation of the excitement to
come. Ocean kayaking, trekking and mountain biking will all be
featured in this first stage. The real crossing will begin during
the 2nd stage of the race. As in previous years all stages will be
long – especially the trekking ones that will take teams deep into
the rainforest on remote trails and up and over the Continental
Divide. The biking stages will traverse Costa Rica's seldom seen
rural areas where teams will need to use their navigational skills
and occasionally ask friendly locals for directions. Two exciting
ropes sections will break up the long stages of the race.
At the moment we have 12 teams set to go – 8 local teams and 4
international teams. On the international side team Bones is back
to defend their title and Dark Horse is back for the 4th time.
These 2 teams are joined by Team Adventure World Magazine and Team
Race the Rockies – both experienced Adventure Racing competitors but
rookies to the Coast to Coast Challenge. A few other international
teams have shown interest and we are confident that they will join
the fun. Costa Rican teams including Economy, Caribe, Armeria
Polini, Rancho Margot, Elok, and Thule are back and are hungry to
win the title from Team Bones. A couple of Costa Rican rookie teams
will join them. There is still space available in the race for
interested teams and several Costa Rican racers are looking to hook
up with international racers. The 10 day program is as follows:
April 18th (Friday) – ARRIVAL Airport pick up & hotel in San
Jose.
April 19th (Saturday) – TRANSFER TO THE COAST – Race prep stuff.
April 20 to 26 – RACE DAYS – 500+ kms from Coast to Coast. The race
starts at 10 am and teams have 142 hours to complete the course. We

the event needs and plenty of adventure for teams and support crews
before and after the race".
"We are ecstatic that such a diverse adventure event is making

snow; exploring the alpine forests of snow gum, sub-alpine ash and
tall mountain gums; stops at historic gold rush towns; and breathing
crisp mountain air while dangling from ropes on exposed high country
cliff faces.

Dear members of Carolina Adventure Racing,
Grettings from Adventure Racing Costa Rica! We would like you to
present our 2008 agenda, including the 8th edition of our Coast to
Coast Challenge, to be held this coming April.
The 2008 adventure racing season in Costa Rica is set to go. This is
our 10th season organizing races and we are excited about the events
we have planned. Here is the schedule for 2008:
1. The Coast to Coast Challenge (5 day expedition race – April
20 - 26)
2. The Pacuare Adventure Race (3 day stage race – August 8, 9 &
10)
3. La Soledad Team MTB Race (1 day race – October 4)
4. 24 Hours of Costa Rica (Expedition race – December 6 & 7)
For each of these events we have designed itineraries for
international teams. You just have to show up at the airport ready
to race and we will take care of the rest.
The first Race will be the 8th Edition of The Coast to Coast
Challenge which will start on the Caribbean Coast at 10am on April
20th 2008. Teams will bike, hike, climb and paddle across Costa Rica
through tropical rain and cloud forest, up and over the continental
divide and along country roads passing typical Costa Rican villages.
Teams will have 142 hours (almost 6 days) to complete the 500+ km
route across Costa Rica. The winning team is expected to finish in
just under 4 days.
The Pacuare Adventure Race and the 24 hours of Costa Rica being much
shorter races may be more attractive to those teams with a busy
schedule. Both these races offer a tough PRO route and a more
accessible SPORT route for teams that are just starting in the sport
of Adventure Racing.
The La Soledad Team MTB race celebrates its 10th edition this year.
We have put together a fun 9 day adventure trip that includes
whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River, hiking and soaking in hot
springs at the Arenal Volcano and relaxing before the big day on the
palm fringed beaches of the Pacific Coast. The numerous mountain bike
rides incorporated into this trip also enable you to experience Costa
Rica up close while preparing for the Race.
The itineraries surrounding the Races are our suggestions to give
teams a chance to see some of this beautiful country. However, we
are always willing to adapt these if there are specific places you
would like to visit or for families with children coming in support
of the team. Coast to Coast Adventures is a full service travel
agency so organizing a trip for family and friends or adding a few
days on the beach after the race are all possibilities.

BONK HARD RACING TO BRING BACK MIGHTY MO EXPEDITION IN 2008
Prairie Village, KS - 01/09/2008 - Bonk Hard Racing, LLC announced that it
will officially bring back the highly anticipated return of their
expedition-length adventure race, the Mighty MO Expedition. The race is to
be held on May 15 - 18, 2008 and will cover 200-250 miles in the beautiful
and rugged Ozarks of Missouri.
The 2006 edition of the Mighty MO saw some of the top adventure racing teams
in the United States come and take on the 230+ mile course. After being
pushed the majority of the race, Team Nike, consisting of Mike Kloser,
Michael Tobin, Ian Adamson and Sari Anderson, came out on top with a very
impressive win. Afterwards, Ian Adamson had this to say about the Mighty MO
Expedition, "That could have been the best single track mountain biking I
have ever done in a race. There were times that I felt like I was in
another country."
The 2008 edition of the Mighty MO Expedition is going to take teams of four
on brand new trails, rivers and terrain. Teams will once again mountain
bike some of the best singletrack trails in the state as well as paddle
beautiful, spring-fed rivers alongside towering bluffs. The majority of the
race will traverse the rugged Ozarks, and teams will explore remote caves
and some of the nation's largest springs.
Jason Elsenraat, owner of Bonk Hard Racing, LLC, had this to say about the
2008 Mighty MO Expedition course, "We have received a lot of pressure over
the past couple of years to bring back the Mighty MO. There are so many
unique geological features in Missouri. It's an amazing state, and if I
didn't feel like I could put together a course that was just as beautiful
and challenging, if not more beautiful and challenging than the 2006 course,
then I probably wouldn't have even considered organizing another Mighty MO
Expedition. With the course we have in the works though, I don't think that
will be a problem."
Registration for the Mighty MO will open at 12PM Central time on February
4th, and will accept registrations for the first 40 teams. Racer check-in
and the race itself will start at the host hotel of the 2007 USARA Adventure
Racing National Championships, the YMCA Trout Lodge near Potosi, Missouri.
There is a cash purse for the race of over $10,500, with the top team taking
home $6,000 plus some great prizes from The North Face, Salomon, Columbia
Sportswear and Numa Sport Optics.
The Mighty MO Expedition will be a part of the 2008 Checkpoint Tracker
Adventure Racing Series, and all co-ed teams that participate will receive
double the points of a 24-Hour event in the Series. The Mighty MO will
again utilize Checkpoint Tracker, an online race management tool that allows
friends and family at home to follow their favorite teams online. Fans will
also be able to view a detailed course overview, read up-to-date race blogs,
post shout outs to their favorite teams and more.
