Yo,
Fraid Im not going to make practice this weekend (and Tuesday), going down south. Ill see you the following weekend tho.
If numbers allow, this weekend, Id recommend doing the flow drill (see attached diagram). Our 1st cut success rate is pretty good, now we need to ‘flow’ up the line, and that, as soon as the 1st cut is complete, he should look round and see someone getting free up the line. Basically you arrange 3 – 5 stacks of people who fake out and cut in, the last runner runs round and takes the disc back to the stack at the bottom.
Indoors Id recommend setting up a sort of ‘7’ cut drill (Mark will extol the virtues of this cut). In the diagram its an inverted 7, but the fake is a run long that turns sharply round for a score (and note also promptly clears out – efficient eh!) in the opposite corner. If theres a lot of you, as usual you can set up an inverted version In the other endzone.
If you do have a meeting this weekend about how you want to arrange things in future practices. Can I suggest only that, in my opinion, the most common misconception is that to encourage beginners to play we should just play games and ‘have fun’. Most beginners require the drills and the chance to run and throw without a mark on them before getting into a game. Its not much fun for them having a game not getting passed to, and I think, contrary to the intended, the days we just scrimmage (play games) will become less infiltrated by beginners and more hard core (yet we wont learn anything), and days where we ‘go over tactics’ will be dragged back to basics by beginners. One of the things I love about ultimate is that you can do well be being not just fit, but clever. Stopping learning is all very well for those who know how to play, but seriously disadvantages the less
experienced and less fit. For me practices and drill are inseparable at any level. (Ps. Please don’t reply to this email, if you agree, great, if you don’t, youll never get me to change my mind : ).
