Just so you all know, I will draft a letter to the CG and MPs that will

There also seem to be some other forums/groups out there. Can someone

Kitesurfing Safety Meeting
1/28/05
Minutes
Mike Hart led the meeting and passed out cards with emergency
contact numbers & safe kiting guidelines.
Seth Perelman showed c-strobe light & reflective tape. A type of
devise like this is highly recommended by Coast Guard. Try to not
use dark colored wet/dry suits. Gregg Healy said drytsuits can
become your body bag if they leak. Robby Guimond suggested do not
go out if the water is so cold that our wetsuits will not be warm
enough. A loud horn alarm was recommended to call in kiters when
dangerous conditions are approaching.
A waist pouch inflatable life jacket was suggested. Concerns were
how to inflate if unconscious? What are approved impact vests that
also act as life jackets?
Everyone agreed to wear a kite leach.
Everyone must do this immediately: write name & telephone # on board
& kite for authorities to find out if victim has been located or not.
We must not put Coast Guard, Marine Police or anyone else including
ourselves into a situation where a rescuer will be put in danger.
Ken Kimball recommended communicating with Marine Police and Coast
Guard to offer information for Kiteboarder rescue i.e. the kiter
will typically be upwind of a kite or board (?).
Mike Hart has made it clear there is to be assigned communicators
with each town to inform the local authorities i.e. Marine Police,
Coast Guard, etc. of our plans before going out kiting as well as to
establish a dialog. Don Miro suggested that if this is too
difficult to at least contact trusted friends about details, times &
location.
Group decided to form a Yahoo user group instead of current email.
Enzo Merluzzi will be"The Administrator." The site will include a
section on safety which will consist of but not be limited to safety
procedures, safe handling tips, links, rescue, currents, weather
patterns, survival plan, disaster plan, first aid, dealing with
beginners, dealing with kiters who do not confirm to the groups'
safety practices & principles, recommended kitesurf schools,
recommended equipment (group purchases), recommended launch sites,
etc. To be named Ct Kiteboarding.
We must try through group peer pressure to persuade all Kiters who
do not conform to and respect our safety and launch site procedures
to follow the rules.
Do not kite at The Wall at high tide were residents own up to high
tide line. Stop kiting at Short Beach 1 hour before tides begin to
go out because of strong rip current.
We agreed not to approach the Town of Stratford at this time and
wait to see how the town reacts when we return to kiting.

OK - but just need to remember that the LHP group has 50+ members from all along the western CT coast who have many of the same concerns about water access etc. Also, many of them are kiters too.
I see some overlap but I guess we just need to see how it goes.

Well the Post article didn't exactly make kiteboarding sound all warm and fuzzy,
but I
thought it was pretty accurate (no thanks to stacey). We should send a reply to
the Post to let
the public and the authorities know that we are organizing.... What the hell is
plying? I think
plying the long island sound would be most pleasant on a kitesurfer. Dude, you
wanna go
plying?
Let's keep it low profile for a while boys and girls....if your kiting in the
sound, all you need is
a couple hundred yards to have fun, no "rainbow reaches" Names and numbers on
the gear
and reflective material on the suits...beachdaddy
I'm sending this out regular email too...join the group yahoo group now!
We should have that list of Island Mike's emergency contact phone
numbers uploaded as a file for access by everyone. This would be
great for people that weren't at Saturday's meeting or for any new
members. Speaking of phone numbers, maybe we should also have a phone
contact list for all members which could be both handy and important.
What does anyone think? Also, here's the link to yesterday's
