also haeard about the recent fatalities around the world, in the last few days.
Many are crying for safety guidelines etc...
The key to remaining alive while kiting is a mix of common sense and luck. 99% common sense the rest is sheer luck.
It's very easy to forget the consequences of being attached to a kite, so, when unforseen events hit, we do not react as we would under normal conditions or as instructed. That combined with the speed at which this occurs and you have yourself a deadly mix.
ONLY remedy is to learn in a very safe place that allows lots of mistakes and with good instruction, when going out in sketchy spots use extra sfety measures for the unforseen situations...
Unfortunately I do not see a quick end to kiting fatalities as i don't see an end to stupidity and lack of common sense. On top of that we'll suffer the occasional freak accident (lofting, equip failure, surf, reef, people hitting each other, etc..) sort of inevitable in this kind of sport.
To all the newbies this is meant to be a simple reminder about the inherent dangers of kiteboarding and how to minimize them.
There is no reason to fear this sport but everyone needs to be fully familiar with their gear, how it works and how it's tuned properly. Understanding safety procedures, why they are there and when to use them... many kiteboarders, even good kiteboarders, do not fully understand their gear (kite), how it works in its details and how it's tuned...all this increases the chances of them having a kite related accident one day, at least IMO..and i have rigged up my share of twisted lines, believe me, so luck has been good to me.... but sure don't want to push it
