Geez Paula, you’re always online
aren’t you?? Lol. Sad news. That’s too bad.

I don't know how many of you know and have ridden with
Tim Miller, but I wanted to pass this along:
A
note to let everyone know that Tim's wife Cindy passed away on
Friday. Visitation is from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hillside Funeral
Home East with the funeral service at 1 p.m. Monday at Central
Christian Church in Wichita.

Wow. I really enjoyed the Chamber of Horrors ride! Thanks to everyone who
encouraged me to go in spite of the "fear" struck in me by "The Ride to
Paradise" two weeks prior. :) Jayde had decided to skip the COH,
partially due to his distaste for the dirt roads and partially because he
wanted to attend a friend's birthday party.
The 10AM start was perfect for me since I had a two hour drive to come in
from Wichita. I got to the bike shop with plenty of time to spare. I
probably didn't pick the best parking spot since I parked right next to the
smoker which was all fired up and ready to cook dinner. My car still
smells like mesquite. :) Could be worse.
I'll write this as though some of you weren't there, because that's the
easiest for me.
We started out with a bit of a "parade" around town. It was really cool
watching our group ride as one, very large, vehicle. We all stopped at
lights as one and rolled on through as one. We turned corners as one, big,
colorful train.
http://www.jrmints.com/biking/04_1106_coh/P1014059.html
That first trip out around the city lake was very weird. I rolled across
the canvas stuff that was on the ground only to find out it acted as some
sort of ultra clingy Velcro on my bike tires. I got off the bike and
worked to pull my tires out of it. On around the lake and over the
bridge/pier.. that was pretty cool.
I took a shortcut to get back up in front of the others so I could try to
take a few photos of faces instead of rears... then we were off moving
through town again.
We got to the first river trail ride and I was moving along at my
Paula-pace.. huffing and puffing but still having fun... until I rounded a
curve with about four inches of super soft sand. My back tire slid out
from under me and I jumped off the trail to keep from getting in anyone's
way. The way my bike flew out from under me really kinda scared me for a
bit. After that, I just started shooting pix of the trail and a few riders
who came by. I passed "G" fixing a flat and continued along the trail. I
got to a point where I wasn't sure which way to go so I stopped to take
some more photos while I waited for more riders to come along.
After the river, we crossed a dike and headed North on some dirt
roads. Wow.. some of that really sucked. There were a few large stretches
where there was a lot of fresh gravel.. but it was like stones poured on
top of gravel. I felt like I was spinning twice for every rotation I was
actually getting.. I started having visions of cartoons where the
characters are running in place on spilled marbles. (Most of my life
relates to looney tunes).
We went North for a very long time... I only saw one rider up ahead of me
and I just hoped he knew where he was going. As he got smaller and
smaller, I just put my head down and started concentrating on the sand and
getting through it. I was working pretty hard but very happy that I didn't
have any hills to really deal with. By now I had been riding for close to
an hour and started to realize that my neck was getting extremely sore. I
was wearing a Walmart brand hydrapak and it was not fitting me correctly
at all... plus I had loaded it down with everything I thought I could
possibly need (but never did) for the ride. After a while, I thought I
heard my name being called from behind me. Another rider (someday I will
start to remember names) was trying to get my attention. I had gone about
a half mile past the turn we were supposed to take. I looked up the road
and saw the guy I had been following.. he was so far ahead there was no way
we could yell for him. I rode back towards the turn with the kind
gentleman who had saved me from myself... during that part of the ride I
saw my first tumbling tumble weed. I had never actually seen one before..
at least not one that was tumbling.
So we headed back West for a while. The wind was brutal. I checked the
weather for the day and it said 10MPH winds but I know they had to be at
least twice that. I hunkered down, cursed at the hydrapak and just kept
going. There were three sandy hills ahead as I bid adieu to the other
rider and dropped my gears down to double ones.
It wasn't too long before I saw a sign to turn back North. There were a
few hills and some really pretty appaloosa horses, then I was heading West
again... again straight into the wind and dealing with a hill. About that
time, the guy who had continued on past the wrong turn caught up with me
(sorry, I'm not sure I ever knew your name).
About another half mile and we were at the next lake trail. By then my
neck hurt so bad I couldn't turn my head from side to side. I wanted to
ditch the pak but had really been enjoying the icy water in it... so I just
unloaded everything I could and left it all in my jacket in the SAG
vehicle. I enjoyed two of those super yummie oatmeal/pnut butter cookies
and was happy to see the rest of the group again.. but I was afraid to ride
the trails due to the stiffness in my neck.. plus I didn't want to lose the
group when they took off.
After a bit, some of us headed back West some more.. about a mile.. I was
quickly left in the dust after spending several minutes viewing a rider who
was doing a little "sagging" of his own (on a bike? what was that?). If
you don't know what sagging is.. ask a 14 year old boy.
About a mile later, I turned back South and Sara Kay caught up to me. We
rode together and talked for a bit. Before long, we headed back West and
straight into the wind. We were totally unprotected from it as there was
nothing but empty fields as far as we could see. These roads also were
loaded with soft sand. After about two minutes I told Sara that this was
where I dropped off... between the sand and the wind, I'm just curling up
and trying to survive. I fully intended to hunker down, drop my gears and
just spin and stay upright.. but Sara had a different idea. She crossed
from my left over to my right and waved me in behind her. I couldn't hear
what she was saying but I thought she was telling me to let her pull me.
I had never tried drafting before. I moved around a bit and found the spot
I needed. It was amazing to me that Sara's body, half the size of mine,
was able to provide so much shelter from the wind. I was nervous, too,
because I had to get my tire really close to hers and that put me a little
bit in the rows of sand which made me slip back and forth a bit. After a
few minutes we hit a steady pace of about 11 miles per hour... I started
feeling really guilty because I knew Sara had to be fighting that wind with
a lot of energy. I'm certain she could have gone faster, but I was ever so
grateful for her help.
Over and over I would start to feel the burn in my thighs and towards my
knees.. I would feel like there was no way I could possibly pedal one more
stroke.. I would start to drop back and feel so disappointed. I would fall
out of Sara's draft and think to myself "you really don't want to deal with
that wind on your own.. it will take so much more out of you than if you
just keep this pace..." I would reach down and find some burst of energy
and I would pedal pedal pedal fast to catch back up to SK.. and again I
would find the draft and let her pull me along.
At one point, the pak on my back had just totally take everything out of me
that it could have. I pulled over and took it off and considered throwing
it in a ditch. Instead I wrapped it around my handlebars. I looked up and
SK had stopped to wait for me. Wow what a sweetie.
Again and again I felt the burn in my legs... my neck was hurting so bad I
just wanted to lay down and forget about everything. I kept pedaling.. I
tried not to think about the burning.. then I noticed my knee had started
popping... I ignored it and concentrated on the burning in my thighs... I
started to drop back some more... I looked up at Sara and thought about how
badly I wished I could wear a pair of cycling shorts like she had on.. I
thought to myself "if you want to look like that you're going to have to
act like that..." so I just kept pushing... I started having visions of
Dory from "Finding Nemo" and I heard her singing "Just keep swimming, just
keep swimming.. swimming swimming..." but in my head it was "Just keep
spinning .. just keep spinning.. spinning spinning...." That kind of made
me feel a little more lighthearted until I no longer felt the burn.
I have no idea how much time we spent on that road, or how far it was..
eventually we came up on the highway and stopped to figure out where to go
next. I hopped off the bike and sat on the ground to stretch my legs out
and rub them down a bit. After about five minutes we were heading off West
again, but this time on pavement..at least for a bit... yeah! That was so
much better. I was having to deal with my pak and all of its straps that
were now dancing around my spokes.. but I was so happy to be on pavement if
only for just a bit.
Not too much later we turned back South and out of the wind. SK got to go
on leave from pulling me.. but I was so grateful to her for having stuck
with me.
At the next SAG I just plopped down and stretched out on the ground for a
bit. There was no shade and I finally found a use for my hydrapak.. it
made a great pillow. Riders started talking about who all had not checked
in yet. I heard that "G" had stopped to fix another flat. I relaxed and
watched everyone enjoying Bill Z's "All natural" snacks. :) The honey
even had bees in it!
http://www.jrmints.com/biking/04_1106_coh/P1014101.html
The other riders all took laps zooming around the trails there. I wanted
to go take photos of some of the cool crossings they were talking about but
I absolutely was afraid to do any technical riding at all. Turning my head
had become beyond painful and after having lay down for a bit, I had
started to stiffen up considerably.
Eventually, I took off again, heading South some more and started riding
with Kim who had just fixed her tire which she had been riding 30+ miles on
while it was mounted backwards... I've never tried this.. I assume it could
make a little extra work for you? After about a half mile we turned back
East and rode the dirt road for about another mile. A huge combine came up
behind us and we both hopped off in the ditch to let it pass. I tried to
get a good shot of it as it went by Kim, but I couldn't get my camera out
fast enough.. I do kind of like the shot I did get though.
http://www.jrmints.com/biking/04_1106_coh/P1014119.html
Kim and I eventually turned back South again.. we were on pavement and it
felt pretty good. I had adjusted my pak so that it dropped down a lot
further on my back, but the damage had been done. Several miles down the
paved road and we came up on Kim's son and his friend. They were sprawled
out and resting from some leg cramps. I thought about the 11 miles of
river trails coming up and decided to offer to take the boys on into
town. They agreed that they'd like to do that so Kim continued on South
towards the river as the boys and I headed back East toward town along a
busy highway.
After about fifteen minutes I had started to regret skipping the
trails. The sun was starting to go down and I was getting a second wind.
(I've always thought I had a hint of a night creature in me)... we got back
to the bike shop and there were a few other riders coming in. I
contemplated heading back out towards the river and then decided against it.
I checked my bike computer and I had gone 46.6 miles in 4 hours 7
minutes. I had hoped to make a significant increase in my miles over the
Ride to Paradise (44 miles in 4 hours). I was feeling really good and the
pain in my neck had even started to subside.
I looked up in time to see "G-Flat" rolling in on his final flat of the day
(how many was that in all?).
http://www.jrmints.com/biking/04_1106_coh/P1014124.html
It was a great ride and my only regret is skipping some of the trails along
the way. My lesson learned was to make sure that all of my gear fits me
correctly next time.
The word of the day was "drafting." SK, you definitely saved me out there
by pulling me along that miserable dirt road for so long. I can only hope
that some day I'll be strong enough to return the favor. :)
The weather was perfect (except for that wind).. I can't believe it got up
to 81 degrees. So far I have been blessed with excellent weather for each
of the rides. So.. when's the next one? I lost four pounds this weekend
and have kept it off all week. I think it's really gone. My leg muscles
are popping out all over and I am starting to feel great!! I don't want to
slow down at all. :)
In case you missed the main page, here are the shots I took.. I wish I had
taken more trail shots, but until I get stronger, I just won't be able to
get out there in the middle of it all with everyone for those.
http://www.jrmints.com/biking/2004_11_coh.html
Thanks everyone for a great ride!! Especially to The Chambers
Family. :) I enjoyed talking to all of you along the way and back at the
shop. I promise I'll start remembering your names eventually.
I did get Jayde back on the bike the next day when he and I met up with
Spradley to ride at Coronado. We did about four laps up and down Coronado
and my body said "enough.. we did this yesterday." I managed to get in
about 5.5 miles though... while Jayde and Spradley went for another sprint
up and back down the hill.
We hope to get in a little bit of riding this weekend. Saturday is a KSS
ride at Santa Fe lake.. would be nice to see a few of you there. :) Then
next week I'm gone, headed to Florida until after Thanksgiving. Seriously
thinking about taking my bike but not so sure I want to worry about it the
whole 24 hour drive.
See ya'll soon one way or the other!

Hiya everyone! It's been quiet on the list this week... maybe because
everyone is out there training for the Chamber of Horrors? I've been doing
a lot of riding this week... even in the rain and the 24mph wind...
hopefully I'll be able to keep up with SOMEONE at the COH. :) Jayde won't
be coming with me tomorrow. He decided to go to a classmate's birthday
party instead.
Anyway... see ya'll in the morning. :)
Paula
It looks like alot of these folks will be competing in the Chamber of
Horrors ride....did I see 62 miles? Now wonder you crazy fools like
to ride uphill on the downhills;)
Good luck, have fun...as you folks say....BLEED!

Below is a post from Nate Schotanus (Fancy Creek in Manhattan) for
Sundays work day schedule. More Chili!
I hope to see some of you at Perry on Saturday (depends on my
schedule
whether I'll make it out). However, I really hope to see you all at
Fancy later on in the day or on Sunday.
Remember, after the trail work/ride/lunch at Perry everyone is
invited
to come out to Fancy Creek to ride/eat/camp/then work on Sunday. When
you all show up from Perry you can set up camp and then we will lead
you
all on a ride, after which I will have vitels (sp?) ready upon your
return. We'll relax by the fire afterwards (it will have been a long
day). Sunday the trail work will start around 10:00 until a little
after noon. We will be working on cutting corridor for a small re-
route
(with enough people it shouldn't take more than 3 hours).
I would also like a head count to gauge how much to cook. That being
said, however, I will be making a massive pot of chili so it should
feed
plenty of people no matter how many show up. Riding, camping, trail
work, beer, chili, and cornbread. Can't be beat!!
BTW thanks to those that have already contacted me.

Hey Erin. Sorry I couldnt make it out there for Paradise. Barb
ended up doing a Cross race and I couldnt drive while on the pain
killers they gave me. I thought I would be good to go after 5 days
but once they got inside my shoulder they found all kinds of stuff.
My one hour surgery ended up being 4.5 hours. The Crawford Lake race
was fun. 19.5 miles of rocks and with no suspension I was all beat
up. My shoulder is doing much better. I can now ride on the roads
so at least I dont have to ride that stupid trainer or rollers.
Actually the rollers my be worse than trail. I slipped off of them
the other day and totally wiped out in the garage. Now that was
funny! You guys have fun at Great Bend. I'll be at Perry adding
more rocks to the trails, cooking, and acting like a fish! :o)

Everyone hold onto your
chairs. I WENT RIDING TODAY!!!! With Bobby and 3 other guys.
It was a lot of fun. A night ride. I did about 18 miles total when
you count the riding from the college to meet up with everyone. Oh yeah!!
And I’m not even tired. It was just a spin. I’m back in the
saddle again. (you’re suppose to sing that) lol. Anyone remember that
song???
Hi all... just wanted to pass these great photos along to you, courtesy
of the KSS guys. :)
----------------------------------
Hey I’m really busy right now so I won’t be able to write much on the KSS
mtb trip, but I do have some pictures.
Also, it was a great time and everyone should make an effort to get there
some day.
Here’s a link to my pics. I should be adding Lonnie’s, Terry’s, Chad’s
and Roy’s pictures once I get them. If they seem dark it is a byproduct
of your monitor or screen. These pictures came out really bright and
colorful on my PC.
Go to:
http://bobssled.smugmug.com You can view the pics as small, medium or large, and set
the background color. You can also set it as a slide show and change the
time interval. Enjoy. I would have had more pictures, but I was also
filming and riding my butt off! J

Finally realized that you are the Rock Lobster guy. (I met you at Crawford Lake)
We missed you at the Ride to Paradise! Hope your recovery is going well. This weekend most of our group is heading over to Great Bend for the 62 mile endurance ride, the "Chamber of Horrors".
Catch you another time.....

Hey Folks,
I thought that I had seen some of you in the past comment that you
ride Perry from time to time.
There is a big workday going on out there this weekend. See the
link below for details.
Hope some of you can make it. They are going to work, ride and then
eat and party...I might even have to take the ole camper out.

This event repeats every week.
Notes:
Some ride out from Lindsborg, others show up whenever. Ride the hill up and down and backwards.
If the above links don't work right follow the links on the newspaper site to the sports index page, Blue Dragons roast broncbusters story, and the opinion page.
I also do much of the online layout work. Not as entertaining as a copy of the Traacks, but it works. You'll notice I didn't mention mountain biking in my column. With only 480 words I figured what's the use...
Wow, very cool. Nice pictures.
Good story. Has your usual flare. Lol.

www.hutch.edu/collegian/ is the link to the Hutch
Collegian website. I have a column in this week's edition along with
pictures of a Jack-O-Lantern I carved and both pics on the sports page. Check it
out sometime. I told them if I ever put the address out to my bike friends
the number of hits on the site would double. Lets see if I'm right.
My real job is working for CertainTeed in
McPherson. I am an industrial electrician on injection molding machines. No I
don't particularly like it but at $18.19 as a starting wage what are you
gonna do.
With working hours of 6AM - 2PM, I should be able
to ride a bit this summer though.
Go check out the Collegian. It is a nice looking
paper for a college publication.

I would be happy to volunteer to do any of the information compiling and
formatting that the group might need. Once we are done submitting it to
IMBA, it could easily be reused as a brochure/pamphlet for local bike shops
and promoting the group. I'm helping with something similar for KSS.
Lemme know how I can help
Paula
Hello everyone,
I was out to Colorado this past weekend and was able to stop by the IMBA
headquarters in Boulder to visit with several of their staff about
submitting a request for an IMBA Trail Care Crew visit in 2005. They
receive hundreds of request every year that they are not able to fulfill but
did however seem genuinely interested in learning more about our club and
efforts that we have made here in Kansas. They gave me some pointers of
things to do to help our chances of getting accepted for a visit in 2005.
Homework for CKMBC Members and Friends:
Trail Identification: Numbers of trails, locations, usage, land owner(s),
land manager(s), etc...
People: CKMBC membership, other trail users, land managers from other
areas, private and public support, regional economic development support,
etc...
In short: We need to identify and build as much support and cooperation
from as many people as possible to make our request for a Trail Care Crew
visit a success. They need to know that the time that they invest in
training our people (planting the seed) will grow into continued efforts
that will serve not only our members but also other trail users as well.
Thanks for the help,
Farmer Doug
