On another note, I made it to Dallas this weekend and thrashed some pretty sweet trail at Grapevine lake. We rode the 19 mile out and back with a couple pretty sick northshore stunts thrown in. The terrain is very 12 miles of hellish, but without the insane climbs. more straight up, not drawn out. It was pretty crazy as it was a Saturday and something like 50 riders were on the trail when we went out, so blind corners and an out-and-back lead to some close calls that put you into the trees trying to avoid head on collisions. What was crazy was we rode the full 19 miles without any mechanicals, then my chain snapped 50 ft from the car. Someone was looking out for me I guess. Definately a trail to check out if you're ever in the Dallas area.

The whole theory is taken at different levels by different people. Bottom
Line, if I spent all day sitting on my couch eating cheez-its today, then
internally combusted tomorrow, I'd be pretty pissed that I wasted even 1
day. Do your thing, but go big every time you do it. Then if you die, you
won't regret half-assin it.

Brad, Hey, best wishes dude. Take the opportunity to assimilate into the
European mind-set. My opinion is they aren't such a bunch of waspy
worry-worts. That's my impression anyway. Loosen up, use any unisex
restrooms you can find, drink a tasty local beer for me..

then kick some butt. Have so much fun doing what you do that it should be
made illegal.

For the rest of the CKMBC and I stress emphatically, empirically and without
a douibt... my finger is nowhere near the delete button :). Thanks for
sending the link Brad.

Well the time has come...I am off in a matter of a couple of days
now. Coincidentally the nerves, anxiety, fear, and the gamet of
emotions started to set in a couple of weeks ago. It is going to be
an awesome time but it will be nice when it is over, maybe I'll
actually be able to sleep. Anyway I will talk to you all when I
return...I have included the link to the web page that is going to be
doing live updates and I think even video coverage. The address is:

http://triathlon.org/duathlon/dua-2004/geel-world-champs/index.htm
and there should be a link on there before the race that has updates
and results, they haven' tupdated it yet though. Everyone keep riding
the season is upon us, time to dust the bikes of and get riding if
you haven't yet.

Hi Kel girl,
Thanks telling us what you have been through. Just
because Cameron gets a lot of press (doesn't mean I
don't respect his pure talent and hard work) doesn't
mean he puts out the most effort. What you have
shared makes what I have been through seem pretty
minimal. I haven't met you personally but would like
to. My Sister-inlaw had a horse go out from under her
and had some head trauma. Went through some of the
same things just not to that extreme. For a CPA to
have a hard time with numbers really threw her for a
loop. The best things about the bad things in life
are that you give you a better perspective on what
really is important. Also makes you appreciate some
simple things in life that everyone else simply take
for granted. A lot of people out there never get
sick, never have anything bad happen and live a pretty
bland life. I get local people ask me all the time
why I would want to go out and suffer on a long or
hard bike ride. If they have to ask they will never
know until they go out and do it or something similar
themselves. The thought that immediately comes to
mind is that "I can!" I am no where near the
abilities on most of the people in CKMBC on a bike.
Them log piles at Farmer Doug's still look like
mountains to me. We have a world class athlete to
kid's in training wheels riding in the parking lot in
this group. But the best part about this group is
that it doesn't matter. Everybody is out there on
their own level competing with themselves. I still
get a kick out of how excited & how much fun Doug
Chambers had when everyone went down the hill at
Farmer Doug's pasture last fall. Talk about a true
love of riding bikes. Terry and a lady crashed, Nick
and I walked our bikes down because it was beyond our
abilities, & another guy (Chamberlain?) tried to ride
back up it. Damn near made it!
I almost didn't show up at Wilson. Pretty stuck
on the mundane things of this world that make you
think you don't have time for things like that. I
showed up late Saturday planning on only coasting by
and riding on Sunday. SK (someone else I respect for
their dedication and abilities on a bike) & Dustin got
me to do the uphill. Payed for it in the long run but
I definitely knew I was alive with lungs burning
barely spinning at what was probably .1 mph. I just
haven't been able to get on a bike since. But have
been itching too. (My son and job) I did resurrect
the old Gold Wing and take it for a spin. Another
thrill on a different edge.
I think everyone is on the same page that they
respect life and aren't going to go out and be totally
stupid. But everyone needs to find their edge and
keep moving over some as time goes by. I just want
Josh to know that what he thinks is impossible today
can happen tomorrow if he looks at it from a different
perspective.

I went out and did a sweet loop on the Hawes/Mine Loop. It is next to the
Salt River, and McDowell mountain, (Red Rock Mountain to some), north of
Mesa. The view was spectacular. The entire 7 mile or so loop, (I got lost
ended up with about 10), was fun. Some fast sections, lots of crushed rock
surfaces to make the corners a bit slippery. The section I got lost on was a
tourcerous climb I didn't need to make. The spocky downhill was reward
enough for the punishment of the climb though. I'm on call this weekend so
naturally just as I got to the really technical downhills and rocky
switchbacks my phone rang. I had to hustle out, but still had a blast on the
technical rocks. Think I might go back tomorrow, only supposed to be 101
then.

Sounds like you are beating up the trails back home. Everytime I ride out
here I find myself saying, "Man Cameron would rock on this stuff". Hope you
make it out next winter.

Oh, one more thing before I go. This guy I met out here that rides the
waterfall is kind of a local celebrity. He can clear anything on National
Trail of South Mountain Park. He is the guy that has the horn hot glued to
his helmet. He is Phillipino or something like that. Everybody just calls
him "horny". I found out yesterday his real name is Moan. Now there is a
custom tag for you, "Horny Moan"!

A good advertisement for wearing helmets whether it be bikes, horses, or
skateboards. I should forward this to my daughter. They ride western and
rarely wear helmets. She wants to start barrell racing this year.

Taking raisks are what life is all about. Granted they should be calculated
risks, and any available safety devices should be considered. bad things can
happen whether you think you are taking a risk or not. I look both ways too,
but I still got hit by a car travelling in excess of 40 mph when I was about
8 yrs old. Took a few days before I could walk,or do much else for myself
after that one as well.

Thanks for sharing the story Kel girl. Remember, scars are just tattoos with
much better stories. I'm thinking you got the deluxe package.

What Brad said really struck me.

It's true you should live life as if you have no tommorrow, but you should
also respect life because there may be a tommorrow.

I'm sure everyone knows of stories of people who had made studip decisions
or just had accidents doing risky stuff, but I have one more for you. I
have died twice. Not the hindi stuff about past reincarnation, but actually
being resecuted twice.

I guess I should begin at the beginning. When I was 16, my family had 5
horses. One of these, was only half broken in and very difficult to control
especially when he got scared. He was also very fast. Consequentially, he
was my favorite. The day after Thanksgiving in 1996, my mom, sister, and I
took three horse out for an extended ride. Since we rode western it wasn't
customary to wear a helmet, so we never thought to wear one. On the way
back, my horse spoked and ran. He tried to turn on a nearby road and
slipped. falling he slammed me into the ground.
I was immediately knocked uncontious. Within a minute, my brain began to
swell and I went into shock. My heart stopped for the first time before the
ambulance arrived. My mom performed CPR on me until they did. My heart
stopped again at the hopital. Afterwards, they preformed a craniotomy
removing the top left 1/4 of my skull. I was in a coma for two weeks.

When I woke up, I couldn't do anything. Eat, drink, talk, walk, write,
laugh, think. My left side was paralyzed. Three weeks after I came out of
the coma, my IQ was measured; it had fallen from 118 to 83. I was in the
hospital for 4 months for rehab. During that time they replace the piece of
skull they removed, but my skull will never completely fuse back together.
There are still places on my head where the pieces don't quite come together
(one place they are a figer-wigth apart). It also means that I have a good
chance of dying from a blow any harder than a mild concussion.

Today I have to live with the effects of that accident. They may not be
much physical effects left except for a weaker left side (even though I am
left-handed), a decreased sense of balance, and a left arm that does not
swing unless I tell it too, but there are plenty of mental disabilities I
have to contend with especially learning diabilities that have symtoms like
ADD, dislexia, discalcula (trouble with numbers and time), and anomia
(extreme difficulty remembering words/names). My IQ is almost back up to
where it was before if you compensate for the learning disabilities.

In the hospital, I met a man who had broken his back by stepping off a curb.
Two years afterwards he still could not feed himself, and struggled to
take ten steps. He had no choice what happened to him, but his one main
regret was not doing more with his life when he could.

I definately take more risks and do more "crazy" stuff since the accident; I
know life is fleeting so we should live the fullest we can. But I also
value life. I don't want to take unnecessary risks that might or will
lessen the quality of my life even more in the future.

So go have fun on the trails, but think twice before taking unescessary
risks. Hopefully I'll see some of you out there.

--Kel

I blew out my knee the first time in high school
football. Spent the better part of my twenties not
doing a lot of things I could have because I was
worried about tearing it up again. Then I blew it
out again hopping off a semi-trailer. I figure if I
have to go through it again it will be because I was
out doing something fun I wanted to be doing.
Besides there ain't much some surgical stainless and a
used achilles tendon can't fix anymore. I am just
waiting for the "sports" version of the knee and ankle
replacements to come out.
Granted a person has to use some common sense and
do things according to their abilities. If you walk
out in front of a moving bus odds are pretty good you
aren't going to be around long. I don't get too
crazy riding around rocks or do any big jumps...
Although I did have a weird dream about we all built
a little ramp at Wilson and were taking rides of the
cliffs going airborn into the water..... made for good
video anyway.... but that's another story!

I have been running crazy the past few days, shoving in the training
rides here and there. My sister is graduating this weekend, and Amber
is the maid of honor for a friend who is having a weeding shower
today. All things add up to charging up the lights and head into the
night. Oh well, there are worse things than having to ride with a
complete night rider set-up on the fat bike. Except Saturday night on
the river tends to be a pretty adventures trip, being that is party
night for the ORV crew. I got chased for a while a couple of weeks
ago, and all though I don't think they were after me to seriously I
didn't hang out to find out. All my bikes are a wreck right now
especially the Fat Bike. It needs at least an hour of attention to
have a fun ride on. I havn't been living up to my name as
rigidonespeeder for the past months. Although ever since SK bought my
Vicious I have had a new singlespeed on the order it is taking a good
deal longer than I had my heart set on. I should be reporting
sometime next week that I have my 5th bike up and running, but I
thought for sure I would be on it this weekend, so there is no
telling really. Hope everyone rides more than they should today,

I couldn't have said it any better. And notice Josh this attitude comes from
the guy that beat me, twice. No tu tus for Farmer Doug. Good riding Doug.
Did you figure out a way to hook those 29s up to your plow or what? Both you
farmer boys (Tom W), were riding good at Wilson. Farming been that slow this
spring? Lol

Damn Paul for a tin man with rusty pipes you ride pretty good. Congrats on
the new baby, and the live life to its fullest attitude.

I have some of the old posts in my hotmail box. I thought I would reply and
get a couple of the strings back on there.

I saw the footage out here in AZ as well Paul. I watched closely on the
footage of the house getting sucked up, I didn't see any bikes flying
through the air so I figured it wasn't your place.

That is one thing about out here, the weather is pretty bland. Hot and
sunny, hot and sunny, hot and sunny.... I think the weather people prerecord
the forecast and then go north for the summer! Last week had me laughing,
the forecast called for a front to move through, dropping temps to the upper
80s, and wind advisories 30 to 40 mph wind gusts! O my! :) I hear monsoon
season has a little variety coming this fall.

LATR all, got some computer work to do then hopefully off to ride the
Hawes/Mine loop northeast of town. Sunny and 102 today. ...but its a dry
heat. lol

Still here in Attica. Sounds like some of the press
reports were a little exagerated. One new house did
lose its roof, some out buildings, and powerlines
down. No injuries. If it had been a 1/2 mile to the
west it would have taken out a good portion of the
town and the house my son was in (didn't know he was
there with his Mom at the time) ..... a little too
close for comfort. It made the national news though.
Had family from Texas and Ohio who called after
hearing about it on their late evening news. Pretty
wild watching it.

Dear CKMBC members,

Well, for those of you who know me I'm a relatively unassuming yet lively
chap with limited computer skills.  I officially (unintentionally) deleted
over a thousand messages from the yahoo Groups site.  hmmmm......   you may
ask, "What was he thinking?"  Sorry but I assumed I was taking care of my
personal inbox.

'yo dude.

I apologize for inconveniencing anyone who had favorite messages, with
useful links, etc. I can just see T-Sprad slowly shaking his head
wondering what sort of cro-magnon digital monster he let loose as a new
moderator!!

Well, I won't do that again unless the club or yahoo requests a general
housecleaning of our site. I will be working to help facilitate the site,
though. As if hitting trees and forgetting to un-clip weren't enough fodder
for ribbing when you see me on the trails add this latest faux-pas to the
list. Ah well, get the heck outta that chair anyway and into the saddle.

Brian

She gets all the cool jobs! Going from setting grass
fires to working at a bike shop! Good luck SK.
Probably doesn't pay as well but bound to be a lot
more fun.

Wow giving up that cushy job and all the benefits to live your dream in a bike shop, what more could anyone ask for.
If I ever make it that far west I'll know where my first stop will be.
p.s. Are there any hills in Hays??

Hey All!

I am back online!  I have been going thru a work transition....April 30th was my last day with the federal government as an NRCS employee.  Took a week to do projects around the house and didn't have internet readily available.  Now, I am settling in to the new living quarters for the time being, in the back of the Hub bike shop here in Hays.  As part of the deal, I am now the shop manager for the Hub.  And inbetween getting the shop back to some sort of an order, I will also be finishing up my thesis!.....I have to keep telling myself that part or I'll never get it done!

I know I need to get some more emails out to some of you specifically and I'll get to that when its not such a late hour (for me, anyway!)  I have a 6am ride to be resting up for.

Just wanted you all to know that I'm still alive!

Wilson was a blast!!  It was great to see so many of you there!  All the campfire talk was great!

See ya'll soon!

John's tours are a blast. For a Tracks version write-up go to
http://spradtracks.tripod.com check out the arcieve pages. I can't remember
which issue it was in 13 or 14 I think. KPBS also came out and did a story
on it for Sunflower Journeys. It still airs every now and then.

Check one out they are a fun time. Just stay away from the steep ditches
afterwards. It will make the lunch much less painful than mine was!

LATR,

T~

Somebody that shall remain unamed got a little delete crazy with
their new moderator priveledges. All that was left was the last few
posts, and the original 4. I deleted the original 4 so now all that
is left is the latest posts.

I'll pass on the word that maybe they shouldn't do that anymore.
There were a couple up there I wanted to respond to myself. Oh well,
yesterday's news. :)

I enjoyed seeing you all at Wilson. Don't know when I will make it
back again, but you know I"m always out here someplace, watching,
riding, and writing. Tracks #17 is coming. Send in submissions soon
if you have any.

SK, glad to see you're back. It looked like your name disappeared
from the members list there for a bit. Good luck with the new job
and life situation. I just told my boss today that I will be moving
on sooner than later. They aren't following through on some job
stuff we discussed, and I'm not interested in staying for what they
have me doing.

Latr, all got things to do. Preping for a night ride into the
mountains later this week. Possibly over to Globe for climb up to
around 8,600, followed by a long downhill, 15 to 18 miles or
something like that. Have to do it this weekend though because the
forest service is about ready to close the area due to the dry
weather and fire hazard. Nothing like a good forest fire to improve
your sprinting and downhiling skills.

Latr,
T~

When I jumped on last night to check the messages that have been
posted, all that would display was the first 4 messages posted when
the Yahoo Group was set up. Everything else on the site worked
fine. Has anyone else had problems or is it something with my
computor?
