Re: [UnserhafenEquestrian] Collegium - your input needed!   Message List

To Lady Katharyn and all others,

Please understand that the front range of Colorado is different from most other areas and I don't think we can blame the Kingdom for lack of support.  Halla has moved to the north and Dubheasa to the south.  Real life often interferes with our desires in many ways.  I would love to not have had to spend and average of $60, and several hours last summer to travel to a 2 hour practice but that is the way of things.  Almost 80% of the population of this state lives along the I 25 corridor and horses and horse activities are continually being squeezed out.  It is not that we boarders haven't asked our barns about practice but the problem is there is never enough room and always too many people who want to use the space.  High demand and little space is a sorry fact of life of the front range.  And I 25 is not my idea of a fun travel with a trailer.  I am probably just getting old but I hate the density and speed of that traffic.

All that said,  I really appreciate the work that has been done by Unser Hafen and their people to try to stimulate interest and give the collegium a try.  I will do what I can to support their efforts.  I was really hoping to have a chance to visit with someone who had a working knowledge of the combat games and hope you might reconsider.  I also know how easy it is to get burned out trying to keep this going, but I have seen how dedicated some others are to making this work and will try again to help as I may this summer.

And with that note,

I will bow out of participating in the Outlands Equestrian activities.

If you do not have the Kingdom support to truly make the group grow, it will continue to stagnate as it has since Halla, Dubheasa, and I started playing at it 17 years ago (I notice niether of them are playing anymore).  A sure-fire path to boredom and burn-out.

I do not have the energy anymore to devote to fighting for "SCA Equestrian Rights" - sites that are accomodating to our activities, space to park the trailers, shade to picket under, a source of water fairly nearby, and NOT pay extra for any of the above.  There was so much support from groups in Ansteorra WANTING horses at their events, that some were actually willing to provide hay and reimburse gas money!

Horses were an integral part of medieval life, and now that equine activites are such a part of the SCA, to not do everything you can to encourage interest and participation is contrary to The Dream.  Even only 3 or 4 riders in barding seen riding past the list field is enough to "make" the event for some folks.

And for precisely the reasons stated - horses are expensive, and those that keep them struggle with board bills, or feed or vet or mortgage.  And transporting them is no small affair.

So for precisely the reasons stated - Equestrians should NEVER have to pay extra for an event.  What a way to stay elitist and snobbish - "You can't afford to play with us"!  I guess that explains the never-ending comparisons to the mundane horse show world, which having experienced just a small taste of - I have kept as far from as possible!

Good luck & good-bye.

Well put, and we would certainly welcome any help and ideas you folks may have.  I would ask that you
try to resist the tendency of the new dogs on the block having to pee on all the garbage cans.  We may
have different ways of getting there, but the goal is the same.  Events from the old Cattle Raid to the
recent event at Sun Pony so we can put on a fair show if the wind is right.  We try not to brag, but some
of us have other interests beyond horses that intrude on 12 hour drives.  Our Equestrian events may not
be as frantic as yours, but fun just the same.

I will sign off with a limerick

There once was a man from Quebec
Who was blue from his toes to his neck
When asked are you frizzed, he replied "Yes I is."
But we don't call this cold in Quebec!

YES!! We Ansteorran equestrians were very spoiled!!! :o)

We came from a kingdom that bent over backwards to help the eq community grow. We had several "brass hats" in the eq community. This aided us in gaining things. It has been quite a change coming to the Outlands.

I am sure Katherine is going through the same "shell shock" as I did. However, I have been here for two years now.. and am adjusting. I still make the 12 hour drive to Lysts in Austin every year.. Leave Friday at 6 AM.. get to site... Then haul home on Sunday. And back at work for Monday.

I will be doing the same to come see you guys. To me this is not an abnormal thing because Texas was so large hauling 10 hours for a weekend event was no big deal. (As long as you guys can have the events on Saturdays!! hehe)

My hope is that with time and everyone working together our program here will continue to grow. At this time it looks like the Albq. group will be starting back up again.. I will need to travel there several time (3 hr drive) to help them get started..

We as a community need to ban together and work at making our program better. Because no one else will. The heavy's, Lights, and archers could care less if they have horses at an event.

I am sure everyone has ideas and opinions on making this work. We all need to make sure to at least listen to everyones ideas.. But also understand that somethings can not change...or it's not yet time for them to change.

If everyone does not agree with each other that is ok. We don't have to agree.  Remember this is a hobby.

Way more then my 2 cents worth!!
