I'm picking up my shots today, my vet recommended them for anyone who
comes in contact with other horses...anywhere, trails,
shows...anywhere. She also stated that if the horse is showing
symptoms of any type of flu or cold DO NOT give them the shot. I
inject my own horses so that info is for those of you that do the
same..my vet costs a small fortune for a house visit!

Yeah....my Vet's office said that if there is neurological damage....than that could be a problem.  But I'm wondering if your horses aren't around any other horses who have it....then aren't the chances of them getting it pretty slim?   It sounded like from that article Vicky sent, that precautions are not sharing anything between horses, like water troughs, medicines etc. and keeping things clean, like buckets, feeders, washing hands, etc.  Sounded like it was more of a problem for large barns, show areas etc.  I was just wondering about that.

Well I just looked in Misty's folder, and she had hers but not since last Jan of '06.  I'm waiting to hear from Dozer's last owner, since I didn't get his medical records when I purchased him.

This makes me want to suggest to all of us multiple horse owners, that it's a good idea to keep complete medical records on ALL of our horses.  I know that when my Vet comes out, she only leaves me with one itemized statement indicating what each horse got and of course, the grand total due at the bottom!  But I always make copies of it to put in EACH horse's file, so that in the event I do ever sell one, the new owner will have everything and anything done to them while in my care, and hopefully, before they were in my care.  Each horse has their own folder which inludes:

1.  A copy of every Vet visit and what they had done.  (including their coggins, of course)

2.  A notation of every Farrier visit, and what was done and said about them if out of the ordinary.  (ie. shoes if needed, a hoof being off balanced, etc)

3.  The date of every worm pasting and type of paste I've given them.

4.  Anything I received from their past owners, including their For Sale Ads if that's how I found them.

5.  What they are given to eat, how much and their supplements.

6.  If I ever get X-Rays done, for a minimum charge I get copies of those X-Rays and put them in their file.

This is just a suggestion, and I'm sure most of us already do it, but since the past owner (who's a friend, luckily) of Dozer apparently didn't keep copies for all her horses, I'm left wondering, till I hear from her, as to when he got his last Rhino shot!  And I want to know now!!!   ; )

Thanks for listening to me....

Okay...I just got off the phone with my Vet's office, and two of my horses, Rusty and Bentley are okay, because they've had this vaccination within a four month period.  I'm not sure about my other two horses, Dozer and Misty, because I just got them this past August, and so I've scheduled the Rhino shot for all of them, just to be on the safe side.  They said it won't hurt to vaccinate Rusty and Bentley again, since some people have it done 4X a year.  So I'm doing it.  Now I just have to wait for the secretary to call me back with an appt day and time.

I'm so glad that this has been brought to all of our attentions, thank you, Melissa, and for your valuable input, thank you, Vicky.  According to my Vet, you were right on all your info!

that vaccinating now, when there has been no history
of prior vaccination against EHV, could be
contra-indicated because the vaccine itself might
cause temperature fluctuations that could be misread."

My Vet's office said that they are thinking the Rhino vaccination would be what is used to protect horses from getting it, but that sounds like they aren't 100% sure.  (?)   At any rate, I'm thinking from reading the article and what I've been told, if your horses have already had the Rhino shot, than it's okay and won't hurt them since they've already had it?  Just guessing....er....hoping!

Yes, a horse brought in from Europe and come into New
York was positive for EHV-1 he gave it to his
neighboring horse in Wellington and that horse had to
be euthanized. As of this morning 15 other horses are
showing clinical signs and 4 stables in Wellington
have been quarentined. Another horse that travelled
with the European horse continued on to California and
also contracted the disease and was euathanized. A
second horse in Wellington also was destroyed.
They are bracing for one heck of an outbreak.
Sounds like it will devast the winter circuit.

If anyone knows of a donkey for sale or one that needs a good home
please contact me. I sold my cutting horses and one of my horses ( a
two year old) was emotionally attached to a yearling that was sold.
She is very depressed and needs a companion animal desparately.

hey gang, I apoligize for not writing as much in this group. I
actually moved to North dakota for well when we had snow in August, I
was on my way back to florida.

I have a question: My friend has three horses, 2 she is on the fence,
but one is a definate sale horse. I just would like to know if there
is any interest In them.

1. Dakota - coming 2 year old Paint colt. white body, with medicine
hat, blue eyes, and a little sorrel in some areas. hips etc. Doesn't
have the greatest pedigree, but he would make a nice trail horse,
maybe even a nice little hunter prospect, or somthing not exactly
sure, I dont think he will be larger than 15 hands. Great attitude,
easy to handle and work with. Would like to get #3,500 OBO

2. Candy - Grey 13 year old Paso Fino gelding, he is a good horse, he
is just old and set in his ways, doesn't like a rider who is
aggresive or heavy handed, likes women and men, but prefers kind,
quiet women, good trail horse, LIKE TO LEAD, great natural gates, a
little bossy around other horses, I think if somone offered her
$2,000 OBO she would sell him.

3. Commanche - 4/5 year old paint gelding. Not registered, sire is
registered, dam is an ex trotting racer. He is about 15.2 bay/white,
nice body. Kind, gentle. Will be an excellent trail riding horse, he
may even be good for Long distance riding, considering he could trot
all day. have to see him to appreciate him, green broke, with riding
and some continued training he will be a great horse. If somone would
offer her in the area of 4,500 OBO she may take it.

My friend and I are in the process of re focusing our horse business
from just having nice riding horses and family pets, to having horse
that we can ride, breed etc. She is going to be hard to sell the two
geldings based on the fact that they need to go to good homes, with
the stipulation that she has first call to repurchase horses if they
should for some reason have to go up for sale again.

If you know anyone who may be interested go ahead and have them email
me, it may be hard to get a picture of those horses. And Like I said,
if she decides not to sell only the coming 2 year old is for sale.
