After considering all factors--possible winter driving challenges,
venue options, and proximity to the March Toronto tournament, I have
decided that June is more realistic. It will also be great to have as
much local participation as possible

Hi Guy. This news is a bit disappointing but what the heck, I suppose
we can make it work in June just as well as we can make it work in
February. But I'm back to thinking about putting on the Oshawa Open PP2
tourney in January. If I do, this will be a bag-your-own-lunch, no
frills, no hoopla, no raffles, no fundraising affair that will focus on
one thing and one thing only - playing table hockey! Entry fee would be
no more than $20. Then we'll do Cambridge in June too!

Cheers, Sid.

For those who couldn't be in Sherbrooke, let me bring the event to
you. 38 were registered, 35 showed up. We started 10-15 minutes later
as we were waiting for 1 person. As usual, 1st classe organisation,
truly the best I'v seen at any tournament.

Play time. My offence is a sleep (my standards) but defensively well,
lets just say 4 goals against in the 1st 8 games, I then go into
energy control as I know it will be a long day, result 7 in the next
3 for a 11 in 11 games.

1st surprise of the event, Gino does not qualify directly to the "A"
group he who finished first in the "A" round robin in Montreal!!!!

Very strong field indeed, only Burt and Greg Peden were not there
among the top 16 that were in Montreal.

Okay, Dany Leclerc has one of his best tournament I beleive finishing
1st in his division, junior having his usual strong showing, and the
ATHL crew having lots of success with Daniel Bordeleau, Michel
Decarie, Eric Larochelle and company making the "A" division directly
as the top 12 made it to then be followed by the top 4 in the "B"
division making it in the A for the play-offs.

Gino, Denis Begin, Alain Gamache and Alex Anoussis rounded up the 13,
14, 15 & 16th spot after round 2

Like I said, there were many turbulent playing events going on in the
play-offs, all of which will be told soon in my continuation story,
can you feel the atmospher a little???? Stay tuned.

Great stuff, Carlo. My "Sherbrooke story" begins with - and Mark
Sokolski might be most interested in this - Powerplay2 exhibition
games before the main Coleco event.

Carlo warned that he would be "ready for me this time" after his 7-2
loss on PP2 at Montreal. Ready he was, and though he played very
well, I won 4-2. Dave Kraehling then handed the timer to me and faced
Carlo in a game that would eventually end in a 3-3 tie!

Gino then stepped in to play Carlo and had enough halfway through
when Carlo led 4-0. Next it was Dany Leclerc beating Carlo 5-2. But
Carlo wanted more. He wanted me again. And he beat me 6-5!

Later in the day I beat DaveK 5-4 and a very good Daniel Bordeleau 3-
1. And Daniel tied Ken Ellis 2-2 in the last of the PP2 games.

On to the main event and my "other game of choice", the Coleco game.
Forget the fact that I played in the "A" group at Brampton earlier
this year, this was by far my best Coleco tourney. I started with two
wins then faced Dave Kraehling, Alain Gamache and Carlo Bossio. I
lost all three but the scores were 6-4, 3-2 and 3-1 respectively. I
finished the first round at 4-6-1, my tie occurring against Denis
Begin, another encouraging result.

In round two I encurred my three worst beatings, 9-4, 9-0 and 11-3
against Remi Lemieux, Gino Bossio and Alain Gamache but otherwise
held my own in mostly close games. Remi's win against me might have
been revenge for my 6-2 win over him at Montreal but it continued a
rivalry between us that includes 3-3 and 1-0 games at earlier
tourneys. I always enjoy playing against Remi Lemieux. Soon enough,
we'll play a playoff series, I'm sure.

After the second round, I had reached the modest goal I had set for
myself - to place in the top 8 of the "B" division. Now I needed to
maintain it. And not only did I win my first ever Coleco playoff
series, I won three of four to place higher (5th in the "B") than
when I went in (6th). More great rivalries are developing with the
likes of Denis Giguere, Pascal Leclerc (one of the most improved
players in Quebec in my opinion) and Patrick Labelle.

Congratulations to Eric Maurice for your "B" division Championship!
But I must say that earlier in my CCTHF "career", when I would
consistently lose in the round of eight on PP2 I warned the guys who
beat me that I was "coming to get you." Well, I did, winning the PP2
Championship at Peterborough earlier this year. Now I have this to
say to Eric Maurice, Remi Lemieux, Denis Giguere and others - "I'm
coming to get you!" Then after that it's going to be the "A" group
for the Flyin' Dutchman. Mark my words!

Congrats to Carlo for winning yet another Coleco Championship. And to
my good friend, Dave Kraehling, who finished second. I'm not at all
surprised with your lofty finish, Dave, after your disappointment at
Montreal.

Thank you to Martin Labelle and your hard-working crew for putting on
yet another first-class event. I enjoyed it immensely.

Cheers, Sid.

I've seen how good Lou Marinoff is on the Coleco game.
(I went 0-6-0 against him in Vancouver one day.)
This tells me how good the field of players must be in
Quebec. Crazy.

The VTHL starts playing Coleco December 1st. We begin
the process of improving our skills on the 5380 game
with this league of 4 or more players soon. It'll be
great.

Carlo, you have got to be the greatest Coleco 5380
player of all time. To keep winning these events is
amazing. Especially with the continued improvements
of all players in your region. Congratulations from
Vancouver.

As for my winnings, yes you have to be good but you also have to be lucky, this time around I got REAL, REAL lucky against my Brother Gino who was playing at the best I'v seen him play during the play-offs after a terrible 1st round. I will continue my story that I'v started soon and you will have the details of what happened in our semi's but lets just say I was a mili fraction of a second close to beeing eliminated in 2 straight in our semi finals match up.

I've heard at THH, folks put on Carlo that he tell some stories not
just direct people to websites. Well, taking time to do write-ups
takes time and effort. So, Carlo, let me help you buddy. Here's two
contrasting stories. One as seen by me from afar and the other up
close and first hand experience.

Lou Marinoff, told us at our league date he was going to "try" to
make it to Sherbrooke, but he would be coming back from Germany with
little room for flight delays and whatnot. I told him when I've gone
to tournaments or our playoffs on little sleep, I just get my butt
whooped.

I know from regularly flying to Denver, running around airports,
flight delays, aircraft problems, rocking and rolling in the air in
bad weather, tight seating, security wanting to go through all of
your stuff when you are running late, or you have a jerk behind you
kicking your seat, or someone sick.....it is tiring! Even when you
are waayyy early, you end up running around.

Lou Marinoff knows this, experiences this and yet made it to
Sherbrooke. He finished sixth.

What Lou accomplished is impressive. Why? Well, here's a contrast
for you.

My Story
I did well in Brampton (#7), good in Chicago (#6) and very well in
the NYC Int'l Classic (#10) against top N. American TH players. But,
when I went to Montreal, I had three or four hours sleep. (I'd done
that three times before in 2006).

In Montreal 2007, I managed to do well in the early round. After
Round One, I was in 3rd place in Pool Three, with only Carlo Bossio
and Burt Brassard ahead of me and eight good players below. (Burt by
one point and I'd beaten Burt). In Round Two, I had my butt handed
to me. I was then #20 going into Round 3, B Pool playoffs.

Then it really went downhill with every player thereafter. As the
day wore on, I wore out. I lost a ton of consecutive games. Players
of all ranks DESTROYED me. Absolutely destroyed me. I fell like a
rock to 31st by day's end. I vowed to never travel to any tournament
where I cannot get a full night's sleep before a tournament.

Lou's Story - A Contrast
Lou...Lou flew in from Germany....got off the airplane...went
through US Customs, (jet lag, time difference and all the
annoyances)...drove to Canada, went through Canadian Customs, played
in the Sherbrooke tournament, somehow maintained his energy all day
long, beat almost all-comers and obviously overall just kicked butt.
I don't care if he got a few zzz's or not, because you are
disoriented for a day or two after flying great distances. He
finished SIXTH in the tournament!

That's a story. That's IMPRESSIVE!
----------------------------------

In the end, Lou cracks the Quebec Top 10, moving up in the Quebec
2007 Rankings to Ninth! --- That's another story for another day.

Kudos to Lou!--to players of the NYCTHA and to anyone else who
traveled from afar to Sherbrooke. I hope to see you all there next
year.

The big winner was Dany Leclerc. He also had his best showing with a
great 5th place finish. Bravo

See Pic Here: http://www.tablehockeyheaven.com/forums/viewtopic.php?

Note: He took a pic with the Flyers board but decided afterwards to
take the Buffalo board. So we are now left with only 2 of the original
first 5 boards built by Martin (Rangers & Flyers) for anyone
interested.

Thank you to all who participated, 75$ were also raised for Hockey Sur

Since everyone is giving their account of the last few tornaments, I thought it would only be fitting that I give my account of this year...
At the beginning of 2007 Eve and I had planned to attend the Las Vegas tournament only.
HA !
What started out as a one off, turned out to be 9 offs. Vegas in January was a pleasent surprise as I thought the weather would be somewhat cold. Instead Vegas was very spring like. My purpose there was to attend AJ's Coleco Classic. But then Jim Rzonka made it worth my while by challenging me to try his Stiga event. Not one to like Stiga as there is really no checking involved, I gave it a shot. I will admit that I now am considering more Stiga tournaments with the mentoring of my friend Bernie....
Coleco tournament #1 was a success with the 7 game final against my latest rival Lou Marinoff.. As in all tournaments I do love the challenge that Dr.Lou presents when he is an opponent.
In March I attended Mark Sokolski's "Toronto Classic". Not thinking that I would win, as the competition was very strong with the likes of Greg Peden, Mark Sokoski, Justin Hawthorn, and the Maker Bros.,Sid Kloosterman as well as my old friend Merv Reutlinger and many more and too many to mention.
A story within a story. 2 nights before the tournament I had Greg and Merv over to my place for a practice session. Both men kicked my butt that night but when we were finished I assured them that I was ready for the competition. The following day Greg called me and we talked about who was going to win the tournament and who would be able to beat him as he was at the top of his game. He asked me a fatal question as to who I thought was going to win. I responded by telling him he wasn't going to win. He got abit aggitated by my answer and called me out as to who could possibly beat him. I jokingly said " who knows, maybe it would be me... and we chuckled and left it at that... Little did we know that I had actually predicted the out come of that tournament.
In April, I ventured upto Brampton to participate in the Brampton tournament, I looked forward to this particular tournament as I like the venue presented. This year however was not to be my year as Martin Labelle decide to showcase his command of the 5380 game. Martin destroyed the competition that day and I had to settle for third.
Now May and Quebec City leaves a sour taste in my mouth this year. As everyone knows I was ROBBED of a new system that was not clearly defined.
Quebec City saw the emergence of the now used playoff system that ranks all players as you compete to the finish.
I want to set the record straight, I like the new system as it is used now. But that doesn't correct the Quebec situation.
Although many people have told me that I was miss treated in this situation no one has had the parts to correct it.
That's all I have to say about that ..it is over...
By the way I still was only awarded 5th place.
This year was a tounament filled year.
In June, I participated in Sid's 1st of 2 tournaments, the newly created "Oshawa Open". The result of that tournament was not one of my better performances. as I played the tourny on 4 hrs sleep and as a result could only muster an 9th place finish.
Now everyone knew I was going to Chicago to compete in Jim Rzonka's USA open at the end of July. And until I heard that Patrick Cote was going I was the shoe in to win. But even though Patrick travelled 21 hrs by bus to Chicago, I thought for sure he would be too tired and would crumble under my attack...not so, he toyed with me giving me a false sense of victory before he gained his second wind and came back to snatch victory right out from underneath me...I ended up second.
The next day I again attempted a Stiga tournament and the competition was fierce. The players however were great to play against and chat about the game of Stiga. I did however acheive a few goals in the tourament, like competing in the round of sixteen and only my second Stiga tournament. I will also say I loved playing Rob Chargo (he beat me two straight) but I definitely got under his skin with my psycho-babel. I will definitely play in more Stiga tournaments in the future.
August- BREAK TIME-whew...
Now September was an incredibly busy month for table hockey.
Ready for this...
Sept. 8/07 New York-3rd
Sept. 15/07 Peterborough Classic- 8th
Sept. 22/07 Montreal aw forget about that one OK.... I will, 17th ouch ("B" Champ)
Oct.BREAK - whew.... Oh I forgot my Artizan Season Started...
Which brings us to Nov.10th/07 Final touranment of the year...
Sherbrooke...
Boy did I have something to prove...
Although Carlo won, I am glad that I could put any doubt that anybody had about my Montreal performance behind me.
I want to appologize to anyone who might have felt like I was possessed. as I did have a point to prove.
Jr. you fell victim to my goalie in the last 2 games. Martin, you were right, the only time it seems I can beat you is on your home turf. As for Carlo, not much to say, you were the better player in the end. Congratulation my friend.

In closing I have this to say about this year....

11 tournaments, 2-1st, 2-2nds, 1 3rd, 1-5th, 1-8th, 1-9th, 1-17th, Stiga, 1-13th and 1-16th
3 States and 2 Provinces
A ton of tablehockey
Many new friends
one- lost in New York
= Priceless memories and a ton of hardware...
Thanks to all for putting up with my Green outfits and my table talk, I had a great year.

Wow, Dave, that's an impressive list of tourneys! You mentioned that

by the way, you're in first place.

My year was made complete by making the A POOL in a Quebec tourney... and even better was seeing an old friend of mine win his first tournament!

Wow, Dave, that's an impressive list of tourneys! You mentioned that
you joined an Artisan league but failed to mention that you also
joined the PTHA! If you forgot, we're playing this Sunday. LoL. And
by the way, you're in first place.

Cheers, Sid.

Chargo (he beat me two straight) but I definitely got under his skin
with my psycho-babel. I will definitely play in more Stiga
tournaments in the future.

Hey Sid, There was a couple of other things I failed to mention so I will mention them now.
1) I want to say thank You to all the Tournament organizers.
Jim Rzonka, A J Sarma, Mark Sokolski, Peter Moulton, Sid Kloosterman, Burt Brassard, John Power, Carlo Bossio, Martin Labelle.
All of you fine gentlemen put allot of hard work and effort into staging these events and you really don't get the recognition you guys deserve.
So I am but one voice and I am proud to say THANK YOU to all of your hard work and efforts.
As for you Sid you are right I also joined the PTHA.
Sorry for not acknowledging your league.
I won't be up yhis weekend but I will be up the following weekend (Nov. 25/07)
Dave
