Subject: RE: [Triple08] Kudos to those that rode yesterday

Hello Everyone,

Loved the route, ride, (even the) wind, friendship, and weather yesterday.
Thanks to Marc and Rick for leading the ride in Susie's absence.  The best news
was that neither Carolyn and I were cold because we were dressed to the hilt.
We had so many layers that we looked like the Michelin Man and Woman.

For those who asked and interested, I crashed at the Samuel P. Taylor Park
section near Olema on Sir Francis Drake yesterday.  That section has extremely
bad pavement; looks like the lines on Libyan dictator Khaddafi's face.  My front
wheel simply got stuck in a groove and stayed stuck when I tried to hop out of
the crack.  The wheel kept going straight but my handlebar turn left, and,
unfortunately, I was already leaning left so my body followed the handlebar.  I
landed on my left elbow and left side, and bounced and landed hard on the right
side.  Suffered road rash throughout.  The elbow is! fine unless I lean on the
tip.  The left side of the lower body is swollen with road rash, but no pain
that I can feel; good thing that part of the body is numb anyway from the bends.

The bike is fine except I broke my Record carbon rear derail; luckily I have a
spare new one at home just knowing that it is one accident from being needed.

Marc, the bike will be good as new again after I replace the derailleur and
clean up the scuff marks on the plastic shifter hood.  FYI...

By the way, it seems to be still too early to sign up for the Butterfield
Double.  The site won't let me register (that Ultra Planet site is very
unuser-friendly, in my opinion).  When someone has been able to sign up for the
Butterfield Double and the Solvang Double, please give the entire group here a
heads up so we can all sign in and lock in the rooms.  Thanks!

Here are the highlights for next Sunday 12/9 ride, maps may or may not be
provided at the start.

Meet at 7 a.m. at home at 3060 Goodwin Ave., Redwood City, (near Fernside Ave.)
650-368-2642 (home) 650-533-0970 (cell)

80 to 100 mile route: Alameda de las Puegas to Santa Cruz, left to Foothill,
right Page Mill, right Arasterdero, left Alpine, right Portola Valley, left Old
La Honda, left Skyline, right Alpine, left Haskins Hill to Pescadero, right
Stage, right 84 to Skyline (bailout #1), left Skyline to Kings Mountain (bailout
#2), straight to 92, right 92, right Canada, left Jefferson, right Farm Hill,
left (unknown road name), right Fernside, right Goodwin.

Hope to see everyone there.

Congrats, everyon!  And Collin, let us all know how you are.  Hope you just have
some cuts and bruis! es, and nothing broken!

The year I did my doubles, I had almost miraculous weather for *almost* every
double.  BUT, one double, the Solvang Double, had incredibly challenging weather
that made up for all the others.  We started out in the cold, and it started
raining shortly afterwards.  Not only did it rain, it pelted.  And one woman I
came across said she felt like she was "getting a facial" the rain was so hard
on her face.  I had to laugh, but it was so true.  It rained and rained hard for
a good 75 miles until we got to San Luis Obispo.  It was surprising to see how
many people toughed it out.

The good news was -- the rain stopped, and we had beautiful weather for the rest
of the ride.

So...anything can happen.  The more you train in varying conditions, the more
prepared you'll be.

There in spirit with you,
Barb

It was all good -I did not know that Collin crashed - hope everything is ok -
Everyone took care of each other in one way or another - the sign of a good
group - Sara was eating and drinking - I guess sometimes the body just says no I
guess - hats off to her for toughing it out, as it was not easy. The Cold was
manageable, the route good, the bakery was the best - the howling head wind on
HWY 1? lets just say as we were riding into Point Reyes station a sudden gust of
wind blew a board out of a fence..I remember saying "that's not a good sign" or
some such.....Highlights for me were getting dropped on a hill by Collin with a
heart rate of 172+ (long way from Kaiser Mike), and following a tandem for a
short spell...I guess he did not like being passed by Marc and I...The Lady was
nice but he was a "Frosty" old dude. For me Avg HR 128BPM - lots of time in the
108 to 119 range - Some short HR spikes to keep warm/fun. Thanks to everybody -
an epic day for sure. Oh yeah - only 10 Sundays to left to the Butterfield  - MM

How are the riders?

Yesterday in Marin, they faced cold weather, winds winds, and mechanical and
cyclists
issues.

You may think that I am crazy but this is good training as on event day, you do
not know
what you will be facing. Barb, Tiff, Rick, Myself can give your our past
experiences if you
need validation.

As for timing on the bike, a number of you have asked. My doubles year, I was
never DNF
i.e. missed cut off time. I purposely started an hour early to allow for
mechanicals and I
prefer riding in the dark in the morning than night. With pace, treat the ride
as your own,
limit your reststops, and using the mind muscle, you can do it!

Marc, thank you for the route and your time.

Rick, thank you for sweeping.

Charlise, sorry to hear about your flat.

Sara: why did you bonk? Uhm... Learn from your experience.

Mike, congrats.

Carolyn, how are you?

Collin: how are you? and your bike? Rick told me your story.(Collin crashed on
Sir Francis
Drake) The nurse in me: get checked out. Even if it is your numb side, that is
even more
reason.

Any questions/concerns?

I was there in spirit.

Cheers,
Susie

Barb Hailey (and sometimes, John)
