Subject: [vjmc] Last chance seat

Folks,
As amazing as it might be, I've been unable to give away a seat! Specifically,
I have a seat from a 1969 Honda CL175K3. The pan is good, the seat cover
is fair. All the foam is shot, crumbling and about 50% of it has gone. Nobody
wanted it so this is the last chance for it. If someone wants it, cost
of shipping
at it is yours. Otherwise it goes to the dumpster.

Ellis

Any suggestions where to get an output shaft seal for a '68 CL160?

Mine's giving up the ghost. The harder I ride, the more it leaks.

years in various capacities. I grew up by Lake Erie, but have lived in Atlanta,
GA for the last 18 years.

> I had planned on riding around Lake Erie on a 50cc MB5 at one time for
something different. I have already done it on a bicycle. While planning, I
found out about the Lake Erie Loop. I plan on riding it in June of 2010.
>
> I acquired a 1970 SL175 from a friend of mine last spring. He picked it up on
Craigslist, and put a spiffy paint job on it, but never got it running. I traded
him a MX100 Yammie for it and it sat in my garage over the summer while I rode
the Trans-America Trail.
> I decided to finish the restoration of the bike, but decided that it would
never be a really "nice" bike. With my desire to ride the loop, I have decided
to modify the bike for this purpose.
>
> I have not seen anyone racing a SL175, but I think it would be a better
starting point in many ways than a CB175. The frame is patterned after a Triumph
frame, is all tube and fairly light. I plan on bracing it like my XS650. The
forks are of a better design, etc. In any case it is around 50# lighter. I have
picked up a CB175 front wheel for a better brake and selection of tires. I
already had a Kawi EX250 fairing that seems to fit well, and found a headlight
for it on ebay. I also found a larger fuel tank off a 350, and plan on mounting
an aux tank since this is an endurance run.
>
> The engine was in good condition--the bike has 3800 miles on the clock. Since
the tires are original, I would guess that this mileage is correct. I
disassembled the engine, and shell blasted the cases and bead blasted the head
and cylinder. The engine must have been stuck at some point because it is bored
.75 over. The rings were stuck in the piston ring grooves, and even after
soaking them in MEK, I ended up breaking 3 of them. I have been looking for a
set of rings, but have not been having much luck.
>
> I am wondering what I should do to the engine to pull a bit more power out of
it while still remaining reliable. This engine will have to last for 650 miles
at 9-10K RPM to average 65 MPH. I plan on the usual blueprinting,
matching/smoothing ports etc. The oiling system seems to be a problem. I
modified the case bolts like JohnyB shows on his site etc. Do people bypass the
rotary joint and run an external filter? It would seem a good way to add some
more oil, and increase reliability.
>
> Boring carbs? Bigger carbs? Stacks and pod filters for sure. I plan on
smoothing the valve stems by the welds. I have had bad luck with more radical
cams on engines with plain cam bearings......Boring above 53mm would seem to
involve having pistons made, and unlike Burt Monroe, I am not planning on
finding what Ford connecting rods make good pistons....... I am going to put a
new cam chain on it, and I found a starter sprocket that I can mod for the
tensioner.
>
> I plan on either making a complete exhaust, or modifying the stock exhaust
into a 2-1. Cone engineering has most of the parts available. Since the bike
will be run on the street, a straight megaphone will not be possible. I am
thinking of using a Supertrapp 3M muffler. I have read that the head pipes need
to be 24 inches long. Is there a total length of the exhaust to shoot for?
>
> This engine will need to produce electricity. Do the stators go bad like on
Yamahas? Should I send it out to be rewound? I have a new voltage reg, and
rectifier. I will also rewire the bike since so much is going to be changed. Is
anyone making Pertronix kits? I can probably source one on my own if I had the
P/N's.
