Marty,
If the battery is dead the charging system is expending all it's
energy trying to charge the battery rather than firing the ignition.
Sounds like a bad battery to me. If you charge the battery over night
you should be able to start and ride the bike for a couple of hours
even if the charging system doesn't work.
If the bike won't run for any substantial length of time after
charging the battery then the battery is done and needs to be
replaced.
