Re: pistons and cam

James,
Pistons are a big question. Most people getting the best hp are using
some kind of custom piston they have made special. I use 56, and 57mm
pistons on which I've tweaked the design four times...going on five.
AHRMA limits Honda 175s' to about 184cc so your choices are a bit
limited. There are some after market 3mm oversize kits (55mm) but they
are total crap. For legal AHRMA racing your best bet may be 1mm or 2mm
oversize OEM Honda pistons if you can find them. Although I have my
doubts as to how many AHRMA guys are actually running legal
displacement.....not that I agree with the rule anyway...moot since I
very rarely race with AHRMA over here on the east coast.

MegaCycle will regrind your stock cam. The two most common profiles
run in these engines is the 122x4 "road race" cam and the 122-20 cam.
Many people have found the 122x4 cam to be way too radical for road
racing ( I've tried one), abusive to the valve train and it really
kills low end power. The 122-20 seems to be the most popular
grind...works well for me. I might even try the 122-00 sometime, it's
even milder and is supposed to produce good low end power...which
these engine really need depending on the track.

You can find some basic info on 175 race bike setup at my site here:

James, You see them come up on ebay pretty often...usually in oversizes. Also any "ART" NOS aftermarket pistons are good, they were the OEM supplier for Honda....

By far the fastest CB160 racing with AHRMA was torn down last year at Daytona, and found to be completely legal. Make no mistake, however - Denny rides the...

I don't think it was an official tear down, he was opening his motor after the race and the race director just sat down and watched to see what was in there....

That sounds reasonable....I know I have my open often enough :) But if they didn't do careful bore and stroke measurements it wouldn't address displacement...
