I recently had my motor completely rebuilt, After assembling the bike I got it
running near tip top, the only change from stock is filter pods and upping the
main jet to 105. I was getting a good tan color from the plugs and went on some
short rides.
Running along at highway speed (about 8k) for less than a couple minutes I lost
the left cylinder, the right would fire but the left made a scratching noise
which led me to figure there was mechanical failure.
After tearing apart the motor the cylinder walls looks amazing as do the pistons
and rings. All the valves are black except for one which is tan. What are your
thought?

... Well I have the head off now, the head looks great the honing marks are still on the cylinder walls. Pistons look great as well as the rings, So...
... I just pulled the entire head as a unit... Thanks I'll look into this, Frustrating as I just payed over a K to have the entire motor ran through....
Vince, Steve is pointing you in the right direction; we spoke on the phone two weeks back about the same exact problem with my rebuild -- you don't have any...
If someone can isolate causes of no oil getting to the left side valves/cam; I would surely like to know - since it seems to be a recurrent problem. My stock...
Huh. I've never had any issues at all getting oil to the top end on any of my racers, nor have I heard any of the other guys up here (around 20+ racers, some...
Can you post pictures of the oil filter cap and spring loaded joint in the oil filter access cover? Is this a 160 or 175, and how much oil was in the motor?...
Unfortunately I cannot, the motor is already at my mechanics being ran through. It is a 1970 vertical 175. I am unsure about the gasket sealer used. Sorry I...
No changes except for the Kibblwhite valves/retainers that you installed for me last year. Verified that oil pump is working and chugging out "volumes" of oil...
Could be a source I suppose. The oil is picked up by the pump, then pushed out the back to the engine case, up around the stud and through the right cover to...
What kind of motor is this? 160/s175/v175? The oil gallery that feeds the rear studs is sealed by sidecovers and sidecover gaskets on both sides. Take a...
CL175 Vertical Upon inspecting the oil pump and the pump check balls, I found the lower one was stuck and then verified that both were operational before ...
Vince, Sorry for hijacking your original thread, but since we were all in the same boat so to speak, I thought the more ppl we could get talking about this,...
Tom, Don't worry about it, these kind of discussions open my eyes about a lot of things I overlooked. To sidetrack a bit I have the chance to buy a rare early...
My dad was a service manager in the early 70s and always thought that the CB450s were bad motors ("when they go, they implode"). I suppose it is that DOHC...
