Don't try to re-invent the wheel. It will only cost you a lot of dollars and effort with no real gain.
Buy the appropriate copper gasket to set a zero deck height and go from there. Very easy. Install the cylinders with no gasket, and measure how high the piston decks extend abouve the top of the cylinder. Order a gasket from Lani in the gauge closest to the measurement you got. Done. Easy. Works. Cheap.

order to get my zero deck height correct should I be using a copper base gasket
of the appropriate thickness? Or possibly elimininate the base casket all
together if necessary?

Hmmm. I like gaskets. I also like Permatex.
For a thinnnnnnn gasket, how about heavy duty aluminum foil?
Permatex the base, set the foil CAREfully,
cut with a sharp exacto knife, in place,
2nd layer of Permatex, add the top.
I use #2, and sparingly.
YMMV with #2, or a thinner one,
-or-
you can thin it chemically for a thinner application.
Thin gasket? Thin sealant layer!
You may want to let it tack up some before each next step.
Again, YMMV.
I like that #2 never fully hardens.
Others like the newer RTV type stuff.
I am high tech, but also old school.
Fair disclosure.. . ;>)
Some folks HATE Permatex.
I like that I *never-ever* have had a leak with it.
I AM a bit anal about prep and application.
I HATE doing a job, twice.
I am a do it once, be anal, type.
It works for me. YMMV. I can be slow, but I am a no DNF.
