Well I don't know what to say. I'm still stumped. Didn't change the
cam chain. Put a new head gasket in, reassembled her and she runs
much better at high rpm now. Went on the highway this morning for
about 25 miles. Held nicely between 65-70mph. Did wanna slow down a
bit causing some downshifting coming back but I'm guessing that was
the 15mph head wind.
I don't get how I was getting a decent compression both hot and cold
if that was the issue. Oh well, plugs (which I just sandblasted are
kind of a burnt red now. That's not quite right but could be from
the cleaning.

apart today to check the cam chain. It looked like it was a 1/2
tooth advanced but once I took it apart and put it back together (had
some seepage from the head gasket I wanted to address) it lined right
up.
