QPR boss Ian Holloway reckons Gavin Peacock
clinched the £350,000 signing of Danny Shittu from
Charlton.<br> Holloway was first alerted to the 21-year-old
defender's potential by Peacock, who watched him while on
loan at The Valley.<br> And after Shittu's loan spell
at Loftus Road, Holloway was so impressed he gambled
a huge sum for a club in administration to secure
his services on a long-term deal.<br>Holloway said:
<br>"We identified him in the summer as a great young
player and we kept in touch with him through
Gavin.<br>He's a fantastic kid and Gavin's admired him for some
time - he gave us rave reviews while they were at
Charlton together.<br>At 21 he needs first-team football
and he will get that here. We get on well and that
chemistry is important."<br><br>©FA-Premier.com

Charlton striker Shaun Bartlett flew off for
African Nations Cup duty yesterday (Monday, January 7)
but admitted he was leaving with a bitter taste in
his mouth.<br> Bartlett wanted to stay at the Valley
and fight to win back his place in the the Addicks
starting line-up.<br> He was even willing to sacrifice a
place in his country's World Cup squad this summer.<br>
However the South African FA put their foot down and made
it clear they would ask FIFA to impose sanctions
against Bartlett if he stayed away.<br> That would have
seen Bartlett banned from playing for his club side
during the course of the competition.<br> Bartlett's
only other option would have been to completely retire
from international football at the age of 29.<br> Now
he could miss a month of Premiership action. And he
revealed: <br>"It was a tough decision but I go to the
African Nations Cup against my wishes and against
Charlton's wishes.<br>I have no choice. It's a FIFA ruling -
and I would have faced a ban. I wanted to stay and
fight for my place at Charlton.<br>There is strong
competition for strikers now and I wanted to concentrate on
my future at the club and show my loyalty to
Charlton as well.<br>It's a sad thing but I was more than
happy to lose my World Cup place -that was no longer
the issue. I've played in a World Cup already -
Charlton is my bread and butter.<br>And I played in the
African Nations Cup in 1996 and won it and scored in
it.<br>But I've always wanted to play in England and I feel
I've taken the long route in getting here.<br>I feel I
should've been here earlier in my career and I don't want
to jeopardise that. I go reluctantly. I'm not happy
but I can't go there in two minds, there's no point
in moping around about it - I'll go there and give
it my best."<br><br>©IcSouthlondon.icnetwork

A Grieving dad has praised Charlton Athletic
footballer Chris Powell for helping ease his sick son's last
week alive.<br> The England international visited
desperately ill Andy Mills in hospital on Christmas Day, just
days before the brave 16-year-old died.<br> He spent
half an hour with the kid who 'hero-worshipped' him,
chatting and handing over a signed England shirt as a
Christmas present.<br> Dad Stuart Mills said: <br>"It was
the most remarkable gesture, and totally unplanned.
Chris left his own family at home to go to the
hospital, and I know it meant the world to Andy."<br> Andy,
who died of pneumonia on December 27, was rarely
conscious over the Christmas period, and heavily sedated to
fight the pain of a respiratory infection, but Stuart
says the visit from his football hero changed
that.<br>He said: <br>"I know it sounds corny, but just after
Chris left, Andy was able to answer his mum's questions
and move his eyes around - he'd not been able to do
that for a week."<br> Andy, who had been severely
physically disabled by a rare metabolic disorder, was the
left back's 'number one fan' for three-and-a-half
years, and had collected scores of signed pictures and
autographs.<br> The soccer star regularly singled Andy out in the
crowd at Charlton games, giving him the thumbs-up
whenever the team scored, and often came over to Andy's
pitchside spot at the end of matches.<br> And at Charlton's
away game at Everton just after Christmas, Chris had
one last tribute for Andy.<br> Stuart, from Gerda
Street, New Eltham, said: <br>"After Charlton's second
goal, Chris came running up and said 'That one's for
Andy'. He was just so fantastic with Andy - guys like
that deserve the highest praise."<br> Andy's funeral
is today at St Lawrence's Church in Sidcup. Stuart
and Andy's mum Gilian ask that any donations should
go to the Charlton Athletic Disabled Supporters'
Club.<br><br>©IcSouthlondon.icnetwork

Chris Bart-Williams says that Charlton will
decide whether to keep him until the end of the season

transfer-listed Nottingham Forest skipper, who has made it clear
that he is looking to stay on loan with The Addicks
until the summer after being told that he does not have
a playing future at the City Ground, is in the
middle of the second month of his loan spell at The
Valley. <br> The 27-year-old made his first start for
Charlton in last Saturday's FA Cup win over Blackpool, and

Charlton are confident of making light work of
Walsall or Bradford in the fourth round of the FA Cup,
despite a narrow escape against Second Division
strugglers Blackpool. <br> England left-back Chris Powell
said after Saturday's 2-1 triumph: <br>"Our confidence
is sky high at the moment and just to get someone
here at The Valley is all we want." <br> Yet it took
two goals in the final 16 minutes on Saturday to
overcome Steve McMahon's Blackpool, who took a 19th-minute
lead through defender John Hills. Charlton's pressure
finally told when Graham Stuart scored from the penalty
spot in the 74th minute after Brian Reid was ruled to
have handled. They then hit the winner two minutes
later when Jason Euell bagged his third goal in three
games. <br> After an indifferent start to the season,
Charlton have started to reproduce the form that saw them
pushing for a place in Europe last campaign, and Powell
thinks their is more to come from the south London side.
<br>"Our form in the league has picked up after an
upanddown start to the season," he said.<br>"Alan
Curbishley said early on that he never had the chance to
pick from a fully-fit squad, but now we've started
showing what we can do. We've had a good run either side
of Christmas and there are important players such as
Mark Kinsella and Richard Rufus about to come back."

Danny Shittu has signed for Queens Park Rangers,

stated that he would not re-sign for The Addicks when
his current contract expired at the end of the season
and he has now joined the Second Division club to
resurrect his career. <br> The deal will be financed by the
Winton family - Matthew and Alex, and their father
Harold - who are members of the Maurice Fitzgerald
consortium which has been trying to buy Rangers. <br>
Charlton have agreed a complicated deal based largely on
appearances and The Addicks have also insisted on a 25 per
cent sell-on clause. <br> Shittu has just started his
third month on loan at Loftus Road and Fitzgerald was
keen to tie up a permanent deal with the youngster as
soon as it was possible. <br> Shittu has become a
crowd favourite since moving to Rangers and boss Ian
Holloway was keen to sign him as soon as possible. He now
has his man and can concentrate on Rangers' push

that Bartlett told the South African FA last week that
he wanted to remain with The Addicks but was ordered
to attend by South Africa, who had threatened to
call FIFA in if he stayed away. <br> The Addicks
striker would not have been able to play for Charlton for

Everyone turns up for the third round of the FA
Cup with different expectations. Lower league sides
expend blood, sweat and a few tears trying to create an
upset, while their higher placed opposition frequently
wriggles uncomfortably, trying to ensure that they somehow
end up in the draw for the next round. <br> The
formbook goes sailing out of the window, as the need to
take your chances becomes far more important than the
desire to play attractive football. After an
uncomfortable opening half against a determined Blackpool side,
the Addicks are now more aware than ever before of
just how unpredictable a beast cup football can be.
Thankfully, when the draw for the fourth round is made
tomorrow, it will feature the name of Charlton Athletic,
but it was very nearly a different story. <br> Before
the game, much was made of the need for an early
goal, in order to settle a few nerves and calm things
down a little. Blackpool, it was presumed, would come
at the Addicks with all guns firing, looking for
something on the break that they could subsequently defend
with their lives. <br><br>For the rest of this match

Charlton manager Alan Curbishley has urged the FA

carrot of a Champions League place in front of the FA

prospect of a chance to play in Europe's leading club

England's bigger clubs from not taking the FA Cup
seriously.<br> Curbishley insists his men were fully committed
for last year's tie with non-league Dagenham and
Redbridge, which Charlton won 1-0 in a nervy replay, and is
shocked some top flight clubs could ever consider
fielding weakened sides.<br>"I still can't get my head

because I think it is," said Curbishley, whose side face
Second Division Blackpool at The Valley on
Saturday.<br>"Perhaps they should make it a Champions League place,
let's make it worth a little bit more. I can't tell you

the FA Cup is one of those days everyone looks
forward to.<br>"I don't know if it's possible to have
Champions League place at the end of the FA Cup, but it

John Robinson believes the Charlton players have
learned from their last FA Cup Third Round ordeal and can
see off Second Division Blackpool at The Valley. <br>
Charlton needed a late equaliser from John Salako to spare
their blushes against non-league Dagenham and Redbridge
last season and narrowly won the replay 1-0 at
Victoria Road. <br> But the Welsh winger believes it will
be a different story this time round and is
confident his side can have a good run in the competition.
<br>Robinson said: <br>"We have learned from the Dagenham
experience and want to ensure that Blackpool are not
creating the headlines on the back pages on Sunday
morning. We certainly approached the game last season in
the right manner and never took them lightly.
<br>That just shows what the FA Cup can conjure up and you
never know how these games are going to pan out.
Blackpool are an unknown quantity but I've played against
their manager Steve McMahon and know what he is all
about. I'm sure his team will be fully committed, just
like he was a player. <br>The longer they hold out in
the game, the more chance they have of creating an
upset. It is a big day out for them but we need to get
on top early on and try and score an early goal."
<br> Robinson has never been past the quarter-final
stage of the competition but still dreams of appearing
in the Final at the Millenium Stadium next May. He
added: <br>"I would love nothing more than to win the FA
Cup with Charlton. <br>We are never going to win the
Premiership and it will be a tall order trying to get into
Europe. The next best thing is a major cup competition
and we have another chance to try and win the
competition. <br>I think we are capable of doing it because,
on our day, we can beat any team in the country.
This is the best squad I have played with since I came
to the club and we have got great depth. It is the
dream of every player to lift the FA Cup and I am
certainly no different. <br>It doesn't matter that the
Final is no longer played at Wembley. I just pray the
draw is kind to us this season." <br><br>©soccernet

Charlton midfielder John Robinson has admitted
that his crude challenge on Ipswich defender Thomas

minutes for Town leaving The Addicks shell-shocked and
Robinson repsonded with a bone-crunching late tackle on

uncertain.<br> The result lifted Charlton to eighth in The
Premiership and Robinson has his eye set on a European

Mansfield Town, who had hoped to sign Jon Fortune
during the past two seasons, have wished the player well
since signing a new Addicks contract. <br> Fortune had
two highly successful loan spells at Field Mill last
season and the season before but, when The Stags tried
to make the move permanent, Alan Curbishley said he
wanted to keep him. <br> The young defender has now
signed a new three-and-a-half year deal after some solid
displays for the first team this season. Nevertheless,
Third Division Mansfield are happy the player has
established himself with a Premiership team. <br>"Fair play
to Jon, he got in their team and has done well,"
said Mansfield assistant boss Stuart Watkiss. <br>"We
all wish him well and you never know when our paths
will cross again - maybe later in the FA
Cup?"<br><br>©teamtalk

Alan Curbishley has told Sean Bartlett he must
decide whether to play for South Africa in the African
Nations Cup in the next 48 hours.<br> Addicks boss
Curbishley faces losing the striker for up to half-a-dozen
matches if he accepts the call-up to play in the
tournament in Mali later this month.<br> However the
29-year-old, currently out of favour at The Valley, knows any
prolonged absence from the Charlton camp could have a dire
effect on his hopes of re-establishing himself in
Curbishley's first XI.<br> The former Cape Town Spurs and FC
Zurich frontman made only a late substitute's appearance
in the New Year's Day thriller with Ipswich, after
falling behind Jason Euell, Kevin Lisbie and Jonatan
Johansson in the pecking order.<br> Now his manager has
demanded a decision on a matter that he admits could
shatter Bartlett's World Cup dreams.<br>Curbishley
said:<br>"I know he's made these statements that he doesn't
wish to go and jeopardise his position here, but now I
think he's got to make his decision.<br>If he decides
to go, then he's away for five or six games and
anything could happen here while he's away.<br>If he
doesn't go, because he's unhappy about missing club
games, they might not take him to the World Cup - and
that would be an absolute shame.<br>He's been called
up and I think he'll go. He's got a decision to
make, and I think it's got to be made in the next
couple of days."<br><br>©football365.com

Graham Stuart looks set to miss Saturday's FA Cup
third-round tie at home to Blackpool, as he is still
struggling to recover from a foot injury.<br> Stuart is
still suffering from the knock that he picked up in the
match at Everton last weekend and was ruled out of the
win over Ipswich on New Year's Day. He is now facing
a race to be fit in time for the clash with the
Second Division side. <br> The Addicks will already be
without Scott Parker for the game as he is suspended.
Parker was cautioned for a fifth time this season in the
defeat against Blackburn before Christmas. <br> Chris
Bart-Williams, on loan from Nottingham Forest, has been given
permission to play in the FA Cup by his First Division
employers. He replaced Parker for the last few minutes of
yesterday's match and could now make his full Addicks debut
on Saturday.<br><br>©teamtalk

John Salako:<br>Reading have extended John
Salako's loan from Charlton by a final month, but whether
they can afford to sign him permanently remains
unclear. <br>The former England winger has been in
excellent form since his switch from The Addicks, scoring
four goals, including three in the last four matches.
<br> His current loan agreement was set to expire at
midnight on New Year's Day, but after playing his part in
the 2-0 win over Port Vale yesterday, Reading
confirmed the 32-year-old, who won five England caps, would
be staying for a third month. <br> After that, The
Royals will have to buy Salako or part company with him
as league rules specify that three months is the
maximum loan period for any player. <br> Salako has added
balance to the Reading side since his arrival and
contributed to a fine run which has put Alan Pardew's side
firmly back in contention for automatic promotion. <br>
Pardew is keen to sign Salako on a permanent basis and
will be anxious to secure the finances to keep him on
board. <br> However, it currently appears unlikely that
they will be able to match his wage demands and Salako
says that he can only meet them so much of the
way.<br><br>Danny Shittu:<br>QPR boss Ian Holloway is set to
succeed in his quest to sign on-loan centre-back Danny
Shittu from The Addicks on a permanent basis.<br>
Rangers and Charlton are in talks with a view to a deal
that will see Shittu move to Loftus Road after
impressing during his loan spell. The loan period was
recently extended, allowing Rangers to keep the
21-year-old while the funding for his transfer is being
sorted out, and the move is expected to be tied up well
before his third month on loan expires. <br> Gavin
Peacock recently had a three-month loan spell at The
Valley, and Alan Curbishley is still keeping tabs on him,
but there is no prospect of an exchange deal.
<br>Holloway confirmed:<br>"We're talking to them about
something permanent. Danny is of the quality to take us
forward."<br><br>©teamtalk

Charlton have handed 21-year-old central defender
Jon Fortune a new three-and-a-half year contract
following a string of impressive performances this
season.<br> The youth team product had not made a first-team
appearance for the Addicks before August, but was called
into action on the opening day against Everton and
then scored his first senior goal in the Worthington
Cup clash with Port Vale.<br> He made his full
Premiership debut in the win at Stamford Bridge a month ago
and performed immaculately over the next five games,
before unluckily losing his starting place for
Saturday's trip to Everton.<br> The new deal, which will
keep him at The Valley until 2005, was signed in the
run-up to kick-off against Ipswich on New Year's

at Goodison Park was a late booking for Luke Young,
