Charlton U19s 2-1 Fulham U19s

>FA Premier Academy League (Under-19s):

Charlton's U19 side earned their third straight victory and fourth in
five games after another excellent performance at the training ground
last Friday.
Up against a hard-working Fulham outfit whose own pass-and-move
approach made for a thrilling match, Mark Robson's team produced some
breathtaking football and the game should really have been out of the
young Cottagers' reach by half-time.
Fresh from their 2-1 win at Bristol City six days earlier, it was
striker Alex Varney that got the ball rolling in the fourth minute.
A superbly cushioned cross from Karl Beckford – back in the starting
line-up after being dropped for the previous game – looked to be
dipping over the head of the Fulham goalkeeper but Varney stole in to
make sure of the ball's final destination; bundling home from a yard.
With left-back Nathan Ashton in sparkling form, the young Addicks
went on to unearth some of their finest football for a long time and
ten minutes later the enterprising Barry Fuller crashed a 25-yarder
against the crossbar.
The home side continued to swarm forward and Varney saw an effort
whistle wide before the dangerous Lloyd Sam forced a fine save out of
the Fulham goalkeeper.
But for all Charlton's pressure, the second goal didn't materialise
and suddenly Fulham were on terms in a game in which they had hardly
figured.
After Addicks goalkeeper Robert Elliot had accidentally punched a
player instead of the ball, the referee had little option but to
point to the spot and it was duly all square.
There should have been a penalty at the other end as well when Sam
was blatantly tugged back having embarrassed a Fulham defender, but
the referee waved play on.
After the break Charlton continued to control the game and just
after the hour Sam struck a post, but still Robson's men couldn't
turn their superiority into goals.
They had to wait until the 82nd minute before the winner arrived.
An exquisite ball over the top from Fred Wilson was perfect for Sam,
and after baffling two defenders with a couple of stunning shimmies,
the England U19 international released a left-footed shot that took a
deflection before nestling in the bottom corner.

Charlton: Elliot, Thanda, Ashton, Fuller, Ricketts, Jackson, Wilson,
Beckford, Sam, Varney, Ndombe (Ward 83).
Subs (not used): Shodeinde, Cottrell, Phillips, Randolph.
