>>>Carling League Cup 03/04 :
Charlton needed extra time and penalties to finally repel the
challenge of Second Division Luton Town in the second round of the
Carling Cup on Tuesday night.
A Paolo Di Canio header - his first goal for the club - saved the
Addicks at the end of 90 minutes and ensured extra time, but then
Luton skipper Chris Coyne equalised Claus Jensen's effort to send the
match to the spot-kick stage at 4-4.
After 15 successful strikes, Coyne's turn in front of goal came
again, but this time Addicks goalkeeper Dean Kiely was equal to his
effort and Charlton emerged victors 8-7 on penalties.
Charlton's starting line-up included two changes from the side that
lost 2-1 to Aston Villa three days earlier, with Kevin Lisbie
replacing Shaun Bartlett, and Graham Stuart instead of Radostin
Kishishev.
Both replaced players didn't make the final 16, but the Addicks
bench had an intriguing make-up with Jason Euell, Richard Rufus and
young winger Jamal Campbell-Ryce raring to go.
The atmosphere at the start of the match would have been more akin
to a reserve match, and bearing in mind the Paolo Di Canio/Lisbie
partnership was on fire in the early part of the season, this may
have influenced Alan Curbishley's thinking...
Charlton were past caring as they finally looked like avoiding their
lower-league hoodoo.
