>>>FA Barclaycard Premiership 03/04 :
Defiant Charlton were beaten as much by a series of poor refereeing
decisions as by Aston Villa as the Addicks went down 2-1 at Villa
Park.
Alpay Ozalan gave the home side an undeserved half-time lead, and
former Charlton youngster Jlloyd Samuel doubled their advantage with
a wonderful 20-yard curling effort after the break.
But the away side responded with great spirit and, but for two
bizarrely disallowed goals and the denial of a penalty for a foul on
Shaun Bartlett, Charlton would have come away from the West Midlands
with more than a late consolation by substitute Kevin Lisbie.
The Addicks made two unforced and one forced changes following the 2-
0 defeat against Manchester United, with Luke Young and Mark Fish
returning after illness and suspension respectively.
And Bartlett was also included in the starting XI after an upset
stomach ruled out leading goalscorer Jason Euell. Chris Perry and
Graham Stuart dropped to the bench...
But although Charlton could have done no more at the final whistle,
it wasn't enough, and the first match in the club's new yellow kit
was marked with a defeat.
