Hey everyone. Just wanted to let you all know that I will be teaching outside of Phoenix, Arizona the end of next month. Would be great to see you if you can make it.
All,
I am pleased to announce our first ever BTSD seminar in the great city
of Las Vegas on 17-18 July. Scott Hamilton and his
group are ready to be great hosts for what we expect to be a fun seminar
and visit. We hope to see you there. The flyer for
this seminar is attached.
To bring everyone up to date with our plans, Joanne and I will depart
Alaska the beginning of July and drive along the Al-Can
highway on a windy route down to Vancouver. We will stop in lovely
Vancouver, home of the 2010 Winter Olympics, for a
visit with friends and our first road trip seminar on 10-11 July. This
will be hosted by Paul Mann and the BTSD Vancouver groups.
Then we will drive onto Vegas and teach on 17-18 July. We hope to see
some shows, esp Circe de Sole, and get in a round of
golf or two before we head onto Denver/Boulder, Colorado. In Boulder,
I'll teach a final seminar on 24-25 July for Nathan Paris
and the Ukibane Dojo. As soon as I get the flyer info for the Vancouver
and Boulder seminars we'll put them up on the forum.
For those of you wondering when we will be back on the east coast, we
plan to arrive back in the DC area on about the
29th of July. I start the War College on 3 August and we will be in the
DC area for at least a year. We look forward to seeing
all of our old friends, students and training partners when we return.
Cheers, Phil

All,
The new Gedan Manual has the explanations for 9th Kyu through 1st Kyu
requirements. It also has
the check sheet for Shodan (but not the explanation). With this in mind,
1st Kyu students now have
the opportunity to get the Gedan Manual before promotion to Shodan. Once
students are promoted
to Shodan (if they dont already have the manual), they will be required
to have it.
For BTSD Instructors, if you already have the 2005 Instructor Manual,
you can continue to use the check
sheets for 9th-1st Kyu. There are some subtle differences between the
old and new manuals, but the check
sheets are basically the same. However, what you don't have in the old
manual are the check sheets for
Mods 1-7 of Level One of the ShinkenTaijutsu program. So if you want to
start incorporating these
requirements within your dojo you may want to get a copy of the Gedan
manual yourself. To be
clear, only certified instructors can sign off students on the Shinken
requirements. Having the check sheets
allows you to train with them and gain familiarity with the requirements
prior to being certified yourselves.
This will speed your own certification process. Currently, Dan Reiher,
Carl Hawkins and Michael Pearce
are authorized to sign off on Level One requirements. It is my hope that
all dojo leaders (San Dan and above)
will become certified to teach these requirements in the next couple of
years.

All,
Recently Soke sent me a letter with some comments on this year's theme.
Its a great insight into his training
and life philosophy. Those who attended Michael Pearce and my seminars
recently may recall Michael
talking about these during training. I found Soke's comments to be
profound and I also thought it interesting that
he referenced handing off the art to the next generation.
Take care all and I look forward to seeing many of you in Pittsburgh for
my "birthday" seminar, with advanced
edged weapons and fundo training and the traditional opening ceremony of
the new Pittsburgh BTS Dojo!
Cheers, Phil
From Soke:
This year's theme is to cultivate in each of us the "talent", "spirit",
and "vessel". We all have talent. Spirit you
can say is a spiritual life, and the vessel - our capacity for spirit
and talent. To possess these three
things leads us to mastery of the martial arts that will be handed down
to the next generation.
All,
I received wonderful news. I was selected to attend the National War
College in Washington, DC starting in August of this year. Its a
prestigious one year Master's program in International Affairs taught
at Fort McNair in downtown DC. Joanne and I will be departing Alaska
in July and move back to this area. I believe we will be here in the
area for the next 4-5 years before looking to do another overseas
assignment. It will be great to re-establish yourselves, our dojo and
reconnect with all of our friends and students again.
Look out for our traveling road show as we drive back from Alaska. We
will be stopping in a few places along the way to teach seminars and
visit with friends.
Cheers, Phil
All,
Dick was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday and is now at home
recovering from surgery.
He cannot lift, push or pull anything right now, but he is doing well
and recovering quickly. He wanted
everyone to know he is doing well and should be back thumping people
soon. If you would like to
send him a get well note, his email is: shadoway@....
Happy holidays everyone. Phil
I spoke with Craig Olson about this and he expressed it in much the
same way as Phil-san - that it's a continuation of this year's theme,
e.g. "Keep Go-ing". Also, if I understood Craig-san correctly, there
will be more focus on the internal versus this year's focus of the
external.

Hello all,
These DVDs are from training in Japan during 2006. The theme that year
was Shinden Fudo Ryu. Soke had the Shihan
continue to teach Gyokko Ryu (theme from 2005) while he taught Shinden
Fudo Ryu at Hombu and Ayase. The training
we filmed during 2006 was a combination of Gyokko Ryu techniques that we
learned attending Nagato and Noguchi Sensei's
classes and the Shinden Fudo Ryu techniques and concepts that we learned
from attending Hatsumi Sensei's classes at
Hombu and Ayase.
Here is a break down of what is on each of the Volumes and the guest
instructors. Note the many BTSD Shidoshi/Shihan
and BTSD friends that are featured. It is also very cool to see how the
theme and training progresses throughout the year
as depicted in these videos. These DVDs will be available for sale on
our website in the next couple of days.

Hello everyone,
I recently released a new training DVD on Togakure Ryu. It is on our
OniBujin website for sale along with a new ShinkenTaijutsu DVD, the
Gyokko Ryu Taikai DVD and all of Mike and my Training in Japan DVDs.
We also have moved over all of the BTSD TVs to the new site for
subscription. You can still access them on our old Shinkentaijutsu
site, but over the next few months we will be phasing that site out in
favor of the new OniBujin site. Go to www.onibujin.com to
register/join or you can go directly to the TV/DVD page at:
http://www.onibujin.com/video. Once there you can navigate to the
ordering system.
Check it out!
Take care. Phil
