You point out, very rightly, that this isn't entirely Gruden's fault or coincidence. However, I do believe it to have some measure of bad luck.
Johnson, was never Gruden's guy, was a statue and was old, all things we said we didn't want in a QB. So we brought in Brian...
Griese, was mobile, supposedly had "grown up" after some problems trying to be John Elway in Denver. He was doing well, but was older. The draft brought us a QB we didn't really want but had to take (his "prospective value" was WAY to high to let him drop lower). Griese started a 2nd year, but injury bug bit and brought on...
Simms. Another statue. Big arm, accurate, both good things. Weak football IQ (at least at NFL level, he made some terrible decisions and
couldn't seem to look past his number 1 receiver (or his O-line!)). Simms grew as the year progressed and actually had a lot of people believing that he just might be the guy when the bug bit again...
Grad. Here is the guy who Jon thought would be the man. He had all the "it" factors that Gruden likes. He had the fact that he was from a small school going for him, so we got him cheap. He was supposed to be the steal of the draft. But, he got forced to work too soon. He didn't make the transition like the Bucs hoped. He never showed signs of "getting it". He just looked lost sometimes.
Enter Garcia. Finally, someone who could run things. But he takes chances he shouldn't. He drives the coaches wild with his near season-ending injury escapes. They put pressure on him to change, he gets ticked, they get ticked, you get what we've got.
IMO, they'll try to ride
Griese for one or two years. They want Luke to be the man, but he is struggling to "get it", too. So, they'll slowly develop JJ. Watch for him to "come out of nowhere" in about 2 years.
Just my $0.02.

I'm not saying this is entirely Gruden's fault, but our inability to keep the same QB for more than year or two is not just coincidence or bad luck. Bear in mind, the QB's you name below...Manning, Brady and Favre, all were either drafted by the team they are still with, or in the case of Favre acquired in a trade shortly after being drafted. That's why I would rather see Luke McCown start now than Griese...we already know what Griese's ceiling is, and at his best he is an average quarterback who will know doubt be left at the alter next year when Gruden's wandering eye finds a new target to lust after. Michael Vick anyone?

I will not place the blame on Coach. How well was the player performing? What was happening behind the scenes... do we know? Keeping the Team together, the Coach is responsible for that & making things happen.... lotsa stuff could've come down...maybe it's just poor performance issues... problem is - we just don't know. There's big money & big egos involved, as well as a lot is at stake. You are right that the Farve affair may have caused a big shake-up, but you may also consider that you can't be the starting QB & come out "rusty" & play like crap either. Garcia's a good person, just hope things work out for all involved. Personally I would like to have the same starting QB for a few seasons at least! Seems like it's this way every year. I wish for a Bucs QB to have longevity with the team like Brady to the Pats, Farve
was to the Cheeseheads, Peyton to the Colts, plus some of the old greats... will the Bucs ever find a worthy one? Was/is it Garcia? Was it Brad Johnson?

Let me add my get-well wishes...hopefully the Bucs will batten down the hatches and give you a nice relaxing Sunday afternoon this week.
It looks like Griese is going to start, though I'm not certain I agree...we've seen Griese here before and there's a reason he's played for what seems like half the teams in the NFL. I think I'd rather let Luke McCown play...he brings athleticism and a much greater upside. Whoever starts at QB, I would really just like to see more of the running game...be it Warrick, Graham or Bennet.

Just heard that Chris Simms was signed by the Titans as a back-up QB. He will not be taking Tom Brady's spot after-all. Who's # 2 for Bucs. Is it Griese or McGown?

I agree…..did anyone else notice that the
saints had a four man defensive front and was still able to get to Garcia. b/c
of this he had to go straight to the outlet receiver or the primary without
having the time to look for anything else. When the defense puts 4 on the front…you
have 7 other defensive men to pick up the pass and make it double coverage or
when they pick up the run they can bring in multiple and stifle an already overwhelmed
offensive line.
I think we lost yesterday b/c the o-line
was not able to give Garcia the time he needed. Look at all the time drew had
when he was in the pocket. Very lopsided if you ask me.

really? i kind of think that when the o line blocks like that its hard to get
the ball to anyone ...except the quick dump off passes ... but i guess we
will see by the end of the season if joey isnt a threat anymore

How about an offensive line to give Garcia time to
throw the ball
The vaunted Tampa 2 stank it up today. Where in the hell is this great Jon Gruden offense? I AM STILL WAITING FOR IT. They didn't win because they didn't deserve too.

I don't know why:
A) Gaines wasn't held; B) We got the pass interference call; C) The Saints could push late and it wasn't "unsportsman- like"; D) the official who Bush slid into (out of bounds) on his way to the end-zone was over-ruled about Bush being out;
Ok, ok, I'll stop whining about the officiating. It felt one-sided to me, but it usually does. We fought to the end against a team that everyone says is "the best". I guess what upset me the most was that it was one-sided on the announcers as well. The Bucs would make a great play, and we'd hear about how great the Saints were at the same play. The Saints would give up a big run, and we'd hear about how the Saints were making that an effort until they stopped a run, and then we'd hear
about how great they were at stopping the run. TELL ME ABOUT THE BUCS!!!!
Ok, rant over. Thanks for sympathizing.

well this buc fan is despairing over our loss to the saints...though
i still have plenty of faith in them but losing our first game to
division rivals is pretty bad for me

sorry i been kinda wrapped up in work and fantasy football .. people will be back very soon .. if the bucs go on a big win streak or the first time they lose ...
i actually sad that parris warren didn't make the team i was pulling for him to come back like he did last preseason .. i think we shoulda made that trade we were "supposedly " offered for simms during the draft. i am very happy garcia will be back under center this year and we will have earnest behind him. and warrick has his homecoming soon, and bennett seems to have finally learned the offense .. and the depth chart had mccown listed as #2 last time i saw it.... all that being said in every single draft i picked tampa as my defense so make the saints walk the plank boys ...
also on a different note, why couldn't we sign warren sapp to a one day contract so he could retire as a buc?? come on!! and has anyone picked up lynch after ne released him??
