If anyone's interested in a one year old Giro Advantage aero helmet, size small, color is grey, or a brandy new pair of zoot ultras, size 8 (women's), please email me directly at helenerroth@....  I am looking to get rid of both very cheap!  I'm in Windsor Terrace, work in coney island, so whichever is more convenient for pick-up, etc.

thank you,
H

Hi Ray.
I believe that only Vittoria & Topeak offer extenders that require you to remove
the valve core before installation. I don't recommend this type of extender
because they are usually much heavier and don't offer any real advantage.
All of the other valve extenders out there (like Problem Solvers, Tufo, Zipp,
etc.) just screw onto your standard tube valve (after you first unscrew your
tube's presta valve tip all the way out). Plumber's teflon tape does help keep
any air from leaking when you inflate the tube, but it is not essential, so if
you have to move the extender to a new tube for an on-the-road flat repair you
don't need to worry about wrapping the valve stem with plumbers tape first.
As far as tubes go, I don't think you will find a tube with a stem long enough
for a 60mm deep rim without using a valve extender. Even if you did, it would
still be a good idea to bring an extender along in your saddle bag. We've all
had cases where we needed to borrow a buddy's tube in an emergency.

Regards,
Michael

I use long valve tubes for my training wheels, and then I have a few topeak extenders for my race wheels. I love 'em.

overall they are both great races, but I agree w/ the fact that NYC is not at
all worth the registration fee and their swag... cheap crap.

course-wise here are my thoughts:

NYC
(swim)
famous for being easily the easiest out of all the courses in the US because of
the strong current. each wave is about 100 people large and you jump off of a
dock and hang onto a rope before the sound of the horn. rumor has it, a bag of
Cheetos® can do the swim in under 40-min. over the past few years, the current
has been working on our side, however, last year (2008) the current switched
directions on swimmers 3/4 the wave starts and they pulled them out of the water
and had them start the rest of the race. you also may have to deal w/ jellyfish,
in 2008 they were freakishly in there and stinging like nobody's business. in
2009, they weren't in the water. and of course, the chemicals taste lovely!

(bike)
it is essentially an OAB (out and back) w/ little to no hard turns aside from
the hill/turn coming in and out of transition. there are a few gradual hills.
but nothing too major. it is not the flattest or most technical ride, but it
does pose a challenge because of congestion of the other athletes.

(run)
Central Park. if you do any road runner races, you have more than likely already
done the run course. Central Park is by no means the easiest 10K to hammer out
for the last part of a triathlon. you will contend w/ hills... rolling, gradual
and steep. the last part of the 10K takes you downhill and to the chute.

(overall)
great course, close to home and def one you can PR on, however the weather tends
to be a huge factor in that you are racing in mid-July when NYC is hot AND
humid. they offer no snaycks at the end and the swag, for what they charge,
ought to be much, MUCH better than it is.

PHILLY
(swim)
starts out in the Schuylkill River, which people in Philly react the same way
people in NYC react to the Hudson... gross and dirty. I however, really, really
enjoyed swimming in it and felt as though it tasted WAY better than Coney
Island. they bus you up to the start and you will have an in-water start. pretty
straight forward, you swim down to the swim-out on the riverbank. when I did it,
there was next to no current, so don't expect to bank on a ton of help.

(bike)
I consider this bike course to still be one of most challenging I have raced on
for (2) reasons: 1) it is very, very technical and 2) it is very, VERY
congested. if you are more on the novice side of cycling, take #1 into
consideration. you will contend with many turns, climbs, turns going into
climbs, uneven surfaces and it is (2) loops. the more novice racers make for
unsafe congestion, so you have to race while keeping in mind, riding
defensively, not just offensively.

(run)
the run course is as flat as a pancake. while I thought I would clock a PR on
this run course, the weather proved otherwise. it was hot and humid and I felt
luck to just finish. I did this race 2-yrs ago and it was not very well
organized on the run course. they had maybe 2 mile markers, so unless you had a
Garmin on your wrist, you were just sorta winging it until you hit the finish
line.

(overall)
I love this race and hope to come back and do it next year. the timing is more
idea in hopes of avoiding the hot and humid weather you would endure in the
middle of July (its at the end of June). they give out a descent swag bad and
the post race snaycks... ARE OFF THE HOOK. we had sub sandwiches, pizza, soft
pretzels, homemade cookies and fruit. the registration fee isn't too high and
it's close enough to NYC that you can caravan on out as a group.

hope this helps!

Here are the NYC Marathon Trivia questions from last night's run for those that
couldn't make it.

:::::NYC MARATHON TRIVIA:::::
(See how many you can answer without using the internet)

1. The first NYC Marathon was run in 1970. In that first race only 55 of 127
starters finished the race. Q:What was the entry fee runners paid to the NYRR
to participate?

2. That first year all 26.2miles were run inside Central Park. Q:How many
years was it until they expanded the course to the full 5 boroughs?

3. The great Norwegian runner Grete Waitz ran and won her first NYC marathon
in 1978. She went on to win the most NYC Marathons of any woman (or Man). Q:How
many times did she win?

4. Who was the last AMERICAN to win the New York City Marathon?
And what year?

5. Which of the following celebrities has never run a New York City marathon:
A: Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee
B: Celebrity Chef Bobby Flay
C: Saved by the Bell Television Celebrity Mario López
D: or Former Van Halen front man David Lee Roth

6. In what notable year was the Men's course record set?

7. Last year's winner Paula Radcliffe holds the women's world record time of
2:15:25 (*over 3 minutes faster than any other woman as ever run) Q:At what
other major city marathon did she do this?

8. BONUS: What was her average pace?

It's been a number of years since I've done either but I don't think that matters much.  The only downside of the philly race is that it's in Philadelphia, the home town of the Phillies and the Eagles.  Everything about the swim and bike are better in Philly, the NY run is definately more scenic.

The logistics of the NY race are what kills it for me, a race in our hometown shouldn't be that hard to get to the starting line, yet it is.

Hey Guys,

I'm leading the group run tomorrow night.
Weather forecast is calling for rain, but I never trust the weatherman.

Hopefully we can get everyone out for an easy taper run to wish good luck to all
the BTCers tackling the Marathon next Sunday.
There will be a special NYC Marathon trivia contest with prizes!

We'll meet at 7pm at Grand Army Plaza. We meet inside the park, close to park
drive.

All speeds and abilities are welcome, hope to see some old and new faces out
there.

Serious downpours cancels the run, otherwise I will be there.

Here to clog up the board. Anybody have any incite on the use of electro stim to alleviate post-op pain? I know the science is a bit mixed but 3 weeks after shoulder surgery my innards are a pharmaceutical cesspool and I'm looking for an alternative (additional) way to manage pain. So what say you? hey guys:

the spring season for Team in Training is kicking off in a month. I'm mentoring
St. Anthony's triathlon again this season :) we have a bunch of info meetings
coming up in the area, see my blurb below for more info.

thx!
:miriam

are you new to the triathlon scene and looking for a great way to learn
everything there is to know about doing them? Team in Training is a program that
is dedicated to doing two things: 1) raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society and 2) helping athletes, novice and advanced, train for endurance events
such as triathlons, marathons and century rides. the premise is simple: raising
money for cancer research in exchange for 5-6-mos of free professional coaching.

tri events coming up for Spring Season:
- St. Anthony's Triathlon (FLA)(Olympic)
- Wildflower (CA) (Olympic & 70.3)
- Devilman (NJ) (Half Lite & Sprint)

for the past 4-yrs I have been a part of this program as a mentor and continue
to support their cause each year bringing many new members to our club. if you
are looking for a way to get into shape for spring, to meet some new people or
simply feel like putting a good reason behind your insane training... then check
out one of the meetings coming up.

if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out. thanks!

FYI Everyone - The Nike Human Race 10k is in Prospect Park Saturday morning at 8am.  Two loops of the park, there are signs around the park warning to expect congestion from 8-10am. If you're doing it, enjoy!  If you're not, maybe avoid.

We had a great turnout last night at Jackrabbit for the trainer test-rides. If you didn't place an order last night for a trainer, you still have until October 23rd to order one of two great trainers at a steep discount. Just call Customer service at (718) 636-9000 ext. 2.

More details about the order below.

JackRabbit has put together a fantastic deal on indoor bike trainers for BTC members.  By placing a big “pre-season” order, we’re able to get very deep discounts from our vendors that simply aren’t available once the weather gets colder.  We’re passing those discounts on to you.  We’ve also looked hard to make sure we’re offering the best product.  Cyclops is still the leader in magnetic trainers, but this year we’re switching to the Kurt Kinetic Road Trainer as our preferred fluid trainer instead of the Cyclops Fluid2.  Our experience testing them both at Interbike last week made it very clear that Kurt makes a better trainer, and the available upgrades make it a trainer that you’ll keep for several years.  Practically every reviewer who has tested both agrees:

http://www.bikesportmichigan.com/reviews/kurt-kinetic.shtml

Delivery is expected during the week of November 2nd – right after the marathon and just in time for it to really start to get cold.

Kurt Kinetic Road Trainer

·        Quieter and smoother than CycleOps Fluid2

·        100% leak-proof (sealed fluid chamber with magnetically coupled driveshaft )

·        More stable, better for standing drills (6.25 lb. flywheel)

·        Easy to use wheel locking mechanism

  • Lowest operating temperature of any fluid trainer
  • 2 1/8” roller reduces tire wear
  • Unconditional lifetime warranty
  • Valuable upgrades available, including power meter

MSRP: $369.99
JackRabbit Regular Price: $349.99
BTC Special Group Order Price: $289.99

CycleOps Mag Trainer

  • Great for riders at any level
  • Lighter, better for travel
  • Magnetic trainers are less expensive than fluid trainers
  • Offers a steady level of resistance – you increase effort by changing gears.
  • Training DVD included

MSRP: $179.99
JackRabbit Regular Price: $169.99
BTC Special Order Group Price: $145.99

CycleOps Bike Protector (aka the “Bike Thong”)

  • Keeps sweat and sports drinks off your bike
  • Handy pockets for TV remote, iPod, or phone
  • Machine washable

MSRP: $24.99

JackRabbit Regular Price: $23.99

BTC Special Order Group Price: $19.99

Leveling/Climbing Block

  • Without a block for your front wheel, you’re riding downhill!
  • Provides a stable, worry-free ride in any rear-mounted trainer.
  • Unique 3-level design lets you select the level of difficulty.
  • Stack two blocks to simulate climbing workouts.
  • Injection-molded construction is virtually indestructible.
  • Use 2 blocks for 12 different adjustment levels.

MSRP: $24.99

JackRabbit Regular Price: $23.99

BTC Special Order Group Price: $19.99

Paul, since you are taller, and we are having trouble finding a larger bike, I'd say bring your bike. I'll have alcohol there to clean the wheels.
