Hey group,
I was wondering if anyone is doing this race. I just registered and was curious
on who else is heading down. Also, if anyone is interested, I have a digital
copy of the NYC tri that aired on tv yesterday. By the way, the 4th second into
the broadcast there is a male with a BTC jersey pushing a red bike out of the
transition area. Just curious who it was. Let me know if you would like a copy
and I can post it somewhere and you can all download it.
Thanks
I wanted to send my congratulations to all who raced in IMLP. I am in awe of your accomplishments! I hope that you are all basking in your glory of achieving such an admirable feat.
I also wanted to congratulate my fellow BTC NYCTri racers. It was really fun to see the BTC racers (the uniforms look great) throughout the race. Special thanks to Miriam and John Stewart for their cheering in Central Park.
And lastly, I wanted to let all of you know about a ride that a friend of mine (actually a 2007 IMLP participant) has organized in Boston. It is called 'Ride for Green'. The ride will go from the South Shore to the North Shore of MA along the coastal towns. It is a 125 mile ride with a small field of experienced
cyclists. Besides getting a great workout, you will be contributing to the protection of more than 1 million acres in urgent need of protection across MA. Details are below.
Laura
----------------
2009 Ride for Green The ride for avid cyclists and a sustainable future
125 miles in one day to benefit the Trustees of Reservations September 12, 2009 Cohasset to Ipswich, MA
To register for the ride call: 978.921.1944
x3021 and ask for Vassar Pierce. Please let him know that you are part of the Brooklyn Tri Club. Registration is open until August 4th, 5 pm.
I've been wanting to come along on one of the Saturday rides for a while, and I think I might be able to make tomorrow's. I've ridden in draft lines before, and while I know 9W is not the park, my pace up there on the loop is usually between 19 and 21, so I think/hope I'll be able to keep up/dangle off.
I've been on many rides to the ranger station and a few out to Nyack (though none this year), and I was looking to get one more longer ride in before I begin my 'taper' for next weekend's Steelman in PA.
Anyway - let me know if you think I can cut it and where/when to meet you all.
Look forward to hearing back,
Rich

If you've never done these rides or are curious what's in store definitely contact me via email asap so we can figure out if this ride is good for you. The average speed of the ride will be 17-18 mph and you should have a good set of bike handling skills at the ready (and also use good judgement on your rides). There is a fair amount of pacelining so you should be comfortable doing that as well.

tomorrow kicks off Summer Streets. for those of you who aren't familiar w/ it,
after getting off of the brooklyn bridge, Lafayette and Park Ave all the way up
to 72nd street (6.9-mi) are shut down so you can run, bike (but not swim) or
even blade in a car-free zone. if you have a long run, this is a perfect and
awesome way to get it in. no traffic lights, no crazy cabbies, great people
watching and there are water stations along the way. I would suggest not riding
any later than 10AM because it gets congested.

Hope everyone can make it out to a local 5k that's for an excellent cause - to help a local Jackrabbit employee make ends meet while he is battling cancer. You can read about him below. If you can't make it to the 5k, hopefully you'll be pursuaded to make a donation to help his fight:
Citytri is putting the 5k on, and the course is a little unusual, so the race should be a good change of pace (literally!). See you on the 25th!

Help Greg Fight Cancer 5K
Please join JackRabbit as we help one of our own Race Day Tuesday August 25th at 7pm
Greg Hamilton was diagnosed with testicular cancer in June of 2009. The cancer spread, so he is currently undergoing four months of chemotherapy, and if that is not successful he intends to undergo major surgery to remove the cancer from every part of his body. Before the diagnosis he was training to run his first ultramarathon, a 50-miler. His dream of joining the FDNY has been put on hold while he focuses all his energy on getting better.
Greg is 22 years old, and has worked at JackRabbit since he arrived in NYC almost two years ago. As an assistant manager in the Union Sq store and now in the Brooklyn store, Greg has helped thousands of people start running, get faster, and reach their goals. This is our opportunity to give back for all the support he's given us over the years.
There are all kinds of costs when fighting cancer, and only a few of them are covered by medical insurance. Greg's parents live in Washington State, so travel and lodging are big expenses. Greg's cell phone bill has doubled. Transportation to and from treatment, plus dozens of co-pays, adds expenses. Greg needs extra medical supplies while he is recovering from chemo, and all of his food needs to be delivered. While he is working at the Brooklyn JackRabbit occasionally, his income is nowehere near what it was and will not be at least until chemo is complete in October. If he has to undergo surgery, that's another 3-6 months of recovery from the surgery where Greg's expenses will be high but his income will be low.
Race day is Tuesday, August 25th in Prospect Park at 7:00pm
Please join us in running the Help Greg Fight Cancer 5K on Tuesday, August 25th, and help Greg focus on fighting the disease and not worrying about his expenses.
Registration is open and available through Active.com. You can also register at any of our store locations and race day registration will be provided. The $20 registration fee does not include a T-shirt so that more of the proceeds can be directed to helping Greg. Registration options also allow you make an additional donation. Contributions are not tax deductible.
We have created a special 'Team in Greging' T-shirt for the cause of which you can purchase and again, ALL proceeds from the sale of the shirt will go directly towards helping Greg.
Race Start will be at the Bartel Prichard lot near the movie theatre. By Subway take the F train to the 15th St / Prospect Park stop. The course takes us off the main loop road and onto the smaller paths through the Park, along the water and over wooded hillsides to the finish. The race will be chip timed, and prizes will be available in a variety of categories.
Volunteers: Anyone who's ever done a road race knows that the key to a successful event are the race day volunteers. If you would like to help out either on race day or with pre-race day preparation please let us know at programs@...

Just make sure to put some nice flat resistant training tires on for this. You don't want to be doing this ride on your racing tubies :).

As a New Yorker it's fun to do but I agree with Kristin it is very stop and go, they also do not close streets so you in traffic, it isn't anywhere as crowded as the Five Borough Bike tour...but hey when do you Cycle in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and da Bronx in one day. There is a nice festival at the end....I would do it for the fun not training purposes.

I did it a few years ago and it's really fun, but I wouldn't say it has a great training benefit. It's a lot of stop and go so you spend a lot of time going slow. But it's a great way to see the entire city in one day!

We're at work on a few key race-critical items:
* Create PACING and/or HEART RATE zones for the bike and run (Have a power
meter? Bring it and learn to use it.)
* USE THESE WEEKLY in brick sessions so you know exactly HOW TO RACE your next
event (you'll be surprised how good you can be)
* Become experts at TRANSITIONS
TONIGHT, everyone did a short (but tough) TEST ON THE BIKE AND RUN to set up
pacing zones. Note: if you missed tonight or can't join for a week or two, no
worries - each new person will do this workout on their first day. If you
already have recent race data, send it to me at JOHN@...
NEXT WEEK, as it will be every other week, is a multi-brick. If you've never
done one, you have to come out and try it.
We had FIVE people out tonight for the brick:
Jeremy R.
Maura G.
Ryan G.
Kathleen O.
Cindy B.
There were PRs for loops - come set a record for yourself.
I WANT TO SEE MORE BTC MEMBERS at the bricks. Go to JackRabbit and sign up. Come
out, have fun, get fit, learn.

I found this article to be very, very interesting. enjoy.
EVER WONDER how to use PACE, HEART RATE, or POWER numbers? What about BUILDING
WORKOUTS from these measures? How about getting that bike computer or heart rate
monitor to work? WHY would/should you bother? (I know very good athletes who go
right to sleep when they look at a manual) WHEREVER YOU ARE on the learning
curve, at the Thursday Bricks you'll learn what's next for you. They are all
great measures that will help you train more effectively.
WE'LL MEET at the 15th St entrance. 645 and 7pm send-off times.
NOT SURE what this will look like or whether you should sign up or not? Stop by
this week or next and check it out. Get your questions answered. Or, send an
email to me at JOHN@...
HERE'S WHAT YOU MIGHT BRING:
Watch with a split timer
Heart rate monitor
Power meter
TESTS/RACE RESULTS you may have (you don't have to have any to get started):
Bike: BEST times for 1 loop or 3 loop effort(s) in Prospect Park, 60min TT,
and/or HR/power data for each
Run: BEST times for 1mi, 5K, 10K, ˝ Marathon, Marathon, 5K of a sprint tri,
and/or HR data for each

I actually also had a similar (bad) experience with Dr. Sands last year: a 2+ hour wait time followed by a less than 5 minute consult, totally condescending, and a non-diagnosis for what turned out to be a stress fracture.
Again, it may just have been the particular situation that day, but I personally would never go back.

Different opinion on Dr. Sands. It was a long time ago, but my feelings about him are still so strong I can't let a recommendation stand uncontested. In early 2004 I went to him for what seemed like chronic calf and shin issues. I'll spare you the long story but he had a terrible bedside manner, completely misdiagnosed me and told me to "just stop running [forever]," saying I could do other exercise to maintain fitness (this was before I became a triathlete). At the time I defined myself as a runner, and him telling me, casually, that I should give up the sport I loved first crushed me, and then made me really angry. I'll never forget those words or how callously they were spoken.
I got a second opinion, took 10 minutes off my marathon PR at the NYC marathon that year, and I got through the hard parts by thinking "F*ck you Dr. Sands". BTW: what I had was a calf strain aggravated by being overcorrected by shoes/orthotics.
Maybe he's changed since then, but at the time, there was no way I would have recommended any passionate athlete go to him.

I busted up my ankle this past weekend playing softball, and after some research I'm now nervous that I tore a tendon (the peroneus longus, if anyone here is a doc). Does anyone have a
recommendation for a good foot and ankle doctor in Brooklyn or lower Manhattan? I JUST registered for races for late summer/fall, and I really, really, really don't want to miss them.

While everyone who finishes any IronMan even deserves a whole lot of respect, two of this year's local finishers deserve a little bit of additional recognition in my opinion.
Many of you may know Mike Pulli, he worked at the Brooklyn JackRabbit for several years and is a very good friend of mine. He recently moved on to bigger and better things and is now back in Boston. IMLP was Mike's fist Ironman and he went on to finish in under 11 hours.
That's an impressive feat on it's own, but he also managed to bang out his first half marathon in 1 hr and 31 minutes! He told me aferwards that he was actually pacing last years winner of the race for several miles and he proceeded to drop this guy at one of the hills! His second half marathon didn't quite go as well, but it was good enough to give him a 3:30ish split overall.
Fewer of you probably know Jovica Ivotek, I don't think he's actually a member of the club, but he rides in the park and I used to swim with him frequently at the Dodge Y. Jovica's wife gave birth like 2 or 3 months ago to their first child. Somehow, he managed to get in enough sleep and training to throw down a sub 10 hour performance and get himself a Kona slot for the second year in a row!
Just thought I'de share these performances with some of you guys who might know these two.
Hi All -
Amy Roth and I are slated to be your BTC Brick Leaders for tonight.
The workout will begin at 7pm on the grassy triangle of the 3rd Street entrance
in Prospect Park. The basic structure a 50 minute bike ride, followed by 30
minute run. We can give more structure when you get there if you'd like a more
customized workout.
The workout will conclude at 8:20pm sharp. After that, Amy and I will pawn your
bikes or trade them for GU.
RAIN/THUNDER CANCELS! We'll see how it looks at 6:30pm and I'll post if we're
going to sacrifice this one to the rain gods.
See you soon!
