RACE REPORTS FOR 8/29/07
Here are a few race reports from this weekend. Also, as I mentioned in a previous email, the list of races that we keep on the yahoo group website (under "files") has been updated for the fall and winter, so check it out for upcoming races. At the end of this email, I pasted all the races on the list for September and October. But first, we got a report from Helene about the Chicago Triathlon, and one from Laura about the SBR series at Harriman. Thanks for sending the reports!
I was going to try to post all the race results from Chicago for everyone from Brooklyn, but the race result website is frankly just too interactive and sophisticated to make that easy. (Seriously, there are like, graphs and percentiles and stuff.) So sorry about that. But go check it out, Brooklyn made a great showing, congratulations to everyone who raced!
http://www.chicagotriathlon.com/
Please send us more Chicago reports. I would love to know who is planning on swimming across the East River under the Brooklyn Bridge on September 8, or going to Montreal for the Triathon Festival. And also anyone who raced the Brooklyn Brick this evening in Prospect Park, please let us know all about it at
news@...

Olympic Distance (.9 mile swim, 24 mile bike, 6.2 mile run)
Besides the 3 hour shuttle "ride" sitting in bumper to bumper traffic to get from the airport to the host hotel on Friday, the weekend racing in Chicago was great!
Transition was HUGE with all 8000 participants (some doing a sprint, some in a mountain bike division, all relays, and the regulars doing the ITU race) in one transition area. It was like a maze, and this year, because of all the rain the week prior, the maze was a muddy mess :-) fun, fun, fun!
52 swim waves!!! Yes, 52!!! They started at 6am, and one wave of about 150 people went off every 4 minutes. Just like NY, only much larger :-) But this time, I finally got to understand what all of my guy friends go through at NY, because my wave didn't go off until 8:21am, wave #31. No bike check the day before, so all 8000 of us bring our bikes and T1/T2 stuff into transition between 4:15 and 5:45am. A little crazy in the mud, but very cool to see so many triathletes in one place!
After checking everything in at transition, I went back to the hotel to eat, "drop the kids off at the pool", rest a little, etc.
The .9 mile swim was out one way, turn around once, and then a straight shot down to transition. The swim was great except for the end when you started running into like the two or three previous waves before you, you know, all the people on their backs, doing breast stroke, etc. The swim time included (just like NY) a fabulous 1/4 mile run with wetsuit on before you crossed the timing mat and entered transition. Total swim time with run in wetsuit - 31 minutes (26 minute swim, not bad!).
T1 was extremely muddy, and I don't wear socks when I bike, iiiicccccckkkkkk! Besides that, and trying to find your way out of transition, nothing out of the ordinary.
The bike was a 2 loop course. Although you'd think because of all the people that the bike would be extremely crowded (as NY is), it wasn't. There were thousands of people out there, but there was never a problem passing anyone. And despite what everyone thinks about Chicago's bike being completely flat, it has rolling hills throughout the entire thing. Very small hills, but it wasn't flat. Bike time - 1:12, avg. 21mph :-)
T2 was a little tricky once again running bare foot through the mud (but this time coming in the other way, so it was alot longer) and having to literally run into a christmas tree to get to my spot on the rack, but uneventful nonetheless.
The run was totally flat, and seemed really long. I started out great off the bike, but when I thought I had hit the turnaround point, and it wasn't for another mile or so, I screwed myself mentally and just couldn't get in the grove again. Run time - 50 min., avg. 8:10/mi. Not a good run for me.
Total time was 2:38 +, not a great time for me at all, but still placed 13 out of about 170+ females in my AG, so overall not a bad day.
A GREAT race, in a FABULOUS city, I will probably be doing this race every year! Highly recommend it! But, just like NY, eventhough they allow 8000 people in, it fills up fast. Hope to see you guys out training/racing soon.
Enjoy the journey :-)

SBR Triathlon Series
August 26
Terry and I raced in the SBR Series Tri #4 this
Sunday. The distance was a .5 mile swim, 16 mile bike
ride and a 4 mile run. This was the fourth event in
the SBR Sprint Triathlon series. SBR just added
another sprint event for September 29th. We also both
participated in the first triathlon in the series in
June. All events have taken place at Lake Sebago in
Harriman State Park, NY.
The swim is in Lake Sebago. It is a beach start. The
course is pretty standard with a swim straight out and
back. Racers then run from the lake to the transition
area (which is in a parking lot). The event tracks
your swim time and then two transition splits (one for
the run to the transition area and the second for the
actual transition to bike). The bike ride has rolling
hills. There is one downhill with lots of curves.
There is also an uphill climb which goes for about a
mile and a half. SBR describes it as 'challenging',
and it is definitely a workout. The run is on dirt
and gravel roads. I have found it to be a lot like a
trail run.
I was very curious to compare my times from August to
June to see how I have progressed. I was really happy
with my improvements. I was most excited about the
bike where I shaved off 7 minutes. I also improved my
run pace by about 30 seconds. I think the Thursday
night Brick workouts in Prospect Park have helped a
lot. Terry's bike time was consistent with the first
race, but his run pace improved by 45 seconds.
Speaking of the Thursday night Brick workouts, it was
fun to see some familiar faces at the race.
Lastly, SBR announced that they are planning to hold
10 events next year. They are looking at different
venues as well as Harriman.
