I called the Sunset park pool today (June 29th). Lap swim doesn't start
until July 5th. (Hours are 7am-8-30am & 7pm-8:30pm Monday-Friday.) I also
went by the Carmine Rec. Center Pool in Manhattan & they start lap swim July
5th too...

I'm pretty sure Helene is out there also, best of luck to everyone!

Just wanted everyone to know that we have a few members at Nationals this week. So we need to cheer for them.  Marianne, Eric, and I believe Cristi is there as well.

So, let's wish them luck.  Don't forget to "respect" Brooklyn in Oregon.

Adam Watson is the proud father of Alexandra Osa Watson (mom Lori
deserves some congratulations as well). Now that Adam has a sweet new
bike and a sweet new baby, what I want to know is, will Alexandra one
day inherit Adam's infamous janky bike?

Congratulations guys!

yes, take a look at Citycoach. Jonathan Cane and Shane should be able to help
you out.

Any chance we can get your name or should we just call you Mr. Nitro.

Just wanted everyone to know that we have a few members at Nationals this week. So we need to cheer for them.  Marianne, Eric, and I believe Cristi is there as well.

So, let's wish them luck.  Don't forget to "respect" Brooklyn in Oregon.

yes, take a look at Citycoach. Jonathan Cane and Shane should be able to help you out.

Any chance we can get your name or should we just call you Mr. Nitro.

Sorry it took me so long to post this one gang but we're going out
this week again! We're advancing the typical 9W ride this week so this
one will start further out and turn around even further out than we've
gone before. I think for this one we might need some vehicles to leave
from my place. As usual the pace will be in the 16-18 mph range but
there will be a lot of climbing (and descending),switchbacks and other
interesting road anomalies...you'll need to have good bike handling
skills and at times be really alert as we roll through some of the
local towns. If you'd like some details on the ride or are interested
coming out drop me a note!
If you have space in your vehicle or need a ride, post a note so you
can get together with someone.

See you out there!

Thanks for all the information Paul, I've been looking forward to the opening of
these pools all winter!
For anyone who hasn't been to the public pools, they are fantastic. Clean water
and lots of it.

	 Hi all,

The lap swimming is not run by the parks lifequards but by another group in
charge of the learn to swim program. This program is partly funded by the
Manhattan Island Foundation www.nycswim.org that organizes the swims in the
Hudson and the Annual Marathon Swim around Manhattan.

Pools have either morning hours (early bird swim 7:00-8:30 am) or (night owl
swim 7:00-8:30 pm) or both. They only track your laps at a single pool and the
early bird and night owl statistics are kept separate. If you swim 25 miles
(their measurement for Manhattan - although it is really 28.5) they give you a
tee shirt. There are different shirts for the Early Bird and the Night Owl....
The top 4 swimmers from each pool - two men - two women are invited to an awards
diner in August at the Hamilton Fish Pool in lower Manhattan.

Swimming is free and for adults only and they will give you an ID card the
first day you swim. Sunset Park had both Early Bird and Night Owl 5 days a week
last year - the night Owl ended earlier than 8:30 am in August as the sun began
to set and they do not have lights.

I do not know how often the Red Hook Pool is open and if they have swimming
every day. Two years ago after some corporate sponsors dropped out they did not
budget enough money and there was limited swimming. I believe last year Red Hook
had a full 5 days both night and day. I would expect that to be true again this
year.

The pools open this Friday - June 29th. A friend of mine is the head lifeguard
at Sunset - I will find contact him and confirm the details.

	 See you at the pool.

I will call him again to be sure but the start is usually on 126th street and
the Boardwalk. I believe the time is 7:30 and the fee is low, maybe $30. I'll
get the details and if he gives me a link I'll post it.

good luck at nationals, helene!

i'll try to write a short race report when i get home from san francisco, but i
did manage to swim from alcatraz this weekend, and i had a GREAT time during the
whole race. this was easily the most challenging triathlon i've ever done, but
my goal was basically to have a good time, and i definitely succeeded.

See what's free at AOL.com.
Hey guys!  I never wrote a race report from two weekends ago, and then I just raced again yesterday, so here's the short scoop on both of them..............

Saturday, June 16th
Pat Griskus Olympic Triathlon

OK, so we started this race with an SBR sleepover!  :-)  Little Jessica, Bobby, and Jon came down to Brooklyn the Friday night before so that we could all get up bright and early the next morning and drive up together.  The race STARTED at 7am!!!!  We were up at 3am, and in the car by 4am.  After a very necessary stop at a gas station so that we could all "drop the kids off at the pool" before the race, we arrived at the race site around 6:15am.  After dealing with Jess' cleat issues, setting ourselves up in transition, etc., we all felt rushed, but were ready to go.

1.5K swim (although everyone there thought is was more like a 1.2 mile swim).  I have never swam so far off course in my life!!!  I actually had a lifeguard hitting me with the rescue tube to get my attention and point me toward where I should be!  Out of the water in 31 minutes, completely exhausted!!!!

40K bike, very hilly course (perfect practice for Nationals this weekend!!!), 1:30.00, dead on, just what I wanted to hit, felt good (and this was on my P2, not even the soloist).

10K run, 2 loop course.  As always, started the run feeling like crap!  Gassy as all hell, drank some defizzed soda, didn't seem to help, tried to maintain my 8 min. miles anyway.  Started to finally feel better at mile 4.  Awesome to see everyone so many times on the run!  50 minutes on the run, not bad considering how I felt.

8th female in my AG, not exactly the finish I was hoping for.  Little Jess took first in her AG!!!!  Free bbq and beer after the race!!!!  Awesome race, would suggest it for everyone next year!  A TON of fun!!!!

Sunday, June 24th
Westchester Medical Center Biathlon

Great little race!!!  2 mile run, 15 mile bike, 2 mile run.  Just wanted to do one more little push before Nationals.

First 2 mile run was just over 15 minutes, felt great!

My first race on the Soloist, with my 12/27 climbing cassette :-)  Everything felt good, 46 minutes on the bike, could have been a little faster, but I felt strong throughout.

Second 2 mile run.  Felt great off of the bike, 14:23!  Averaged 7:12/miles!!!  That's totally a PR for me!  Totally psyched!

8th female overall, out of 109!!!  1st in AG!!!!  :-)  YEAH!!!  Felt great throughout race and finally feel that I am ready for Nationals this Saturday!

Leaving for Oregon Wed. night, so I'll see you all in July when I get back :-)

Enjoy the journey........

Hey BKTri,

I missed the chance to give my input on two threads this week:

1.  I drinkGu2O.  It's about $16 (jackrabbit gives 10% off) for a tub so the
price is good.  And it works well for me.  Mainly because it goes easy on the
sugar, colors, and over flavoring.  So you can mix a stiff drink and it still
tastes pretty mild.  I think it only has carbs however, so if you require
protein you'll have to get it from your snacks.  And Conrad's right - save the
high fructose corn syrup for coca cola.

2.  I don't think anyone in the club races on a fixed gear/single speed.  But I
see someone in every race riding one, so 'nitro.inc' you won't be alone.  I rode
a 2 speed for my first three seasons (single speed freewheel in back and 2
chainrings up front).  It worked well and the bike portion was never a problem.
I designed the bike for NYC commuter riding and I only raced in greater NYC
races so it was a nice fit.

That said, I enjoyed my new 10+ speed last weekend at Harriman.  I don't think I
could have climbed the hills on my old one.  And I was in my biggest gears for
large portions of the rolling hills and decents so I would have been just
coasting on my old bike.

If you want to be tri-ready and ride a single speed I would build a rear wheel
that's double dished with a freewheel on one side and a fixed on the other.
Obviously you'll need a hand brake for stopping when in freewheel.  And if you
want to go the 2 speed route I can show you how to rig the chain, etc.  With the
right crankset you could make it a 3 speed which would sweeten the deal.  Oh,
and there's always the option of a rear hub
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hub_gear> with internal shifting (rohloff makes a
14 speed <http://www.rohloff.de/en/home/index.html> and all those granny bikes
the scenesters ride have 3 speeds).  It's a good choice if you have a thing
against derraileurs or want the clean look of a chain that doesn't change shape!
