Hi Ken,
I started doing triathlons last year. I got into them because for the past few years I've done several century bike rides and just needed a new challenge. Last year I did an olympic tri in Rincon, Puerto Rico. My chip fell off and my name never registered. Oh well, I finished. :-) Second was the Staten Island sprint tri. This time there was no equipment malfunction.
At the present, I'm in week 7 of an 18 week training program for the May 1 Long Island Marathon. This will be my first marathon. My calendar this also includes th NYC Tri, the Staten Island tri and several century bike rides and runs of various distances. My real goal this year is not so much the marathon, but testing the water (i.e. ability to run and its impact on my knees) for doing my first Ironman - which would probably be early 2006 somewhere in South America. Needless to say, while a tri newbie, I've been bitten by the bug.
Motivation....honestly, I've been pushing myself. I have friends who are usually just into one sport, but not all three. I swim some mornings at Eastern Athletic Club in Brooklyn Heights. I also swim once a week with a Master swim team (www.tnya.org). The swim team is divided up by levels, so don't feel discouraged. I run with NY Road Runners, have even taken their classes, which are excellent. When it's warm, I bike with www.nycc.org and www.5bbc.org. At the moment, however I do cycling classes at NY Sports Club either at lunch or night. (i know, two gym memberships....NYSC does not have a pool close to me).
Once the club is established, perhaps group brick sessions will take place, or at least we have running partners. I belong to www.tanyc.org, and they have brick sessions, but I was not able to take advantage of them last year because of the time of day they started.
Cheers,
Dean

Last summer was my first triathlon race. After a week at Total
Immersion's Tri-camp, we entered the sprint distance Vermont Sun
series. I finished, but it wasn't pretty. I also ran in the Schiff
Scout Camp off road sprint dist.tri a few weeks later. Still not
pretty, but better. Then the summer ended, and so did all training. I
think if I were part of a club I might have continued training
because my enthusiasm was very high, it still is. Unfortunately, I
out-numbered myself in the vote on whether to train or watch a movie.
I suspect voter fraud. Perhaps this club will help sway the vote,
there is strength in unity
I have never been a member in a club like this so I don't have
any expectations other than to meet some like minded friends, share
some experience, and have some fun. Really looking forward to being a
part of the club and thank you for making the effort.
Your Friend,
Ken
