I put a new test layout on the site. www.brooklynroadrunners.org
If the guys I copied the layout form have no objections, it might just
work. There is also a new page called runs on our weekly training
schedule.
I rearranged also the calendar and put data on our own runs on the site.
Please give feedback.

Subject: Doggie Daycare facility seeking runners who would like to run with dogs
November 29, 2007
Dear Brooklyn Runner's Club,
Hello! I'm contacting you on behalf of Kiki's Pet Hotel in Fort Greene,
Brooklyn. We would like to offer a service to our clients that would take
dog-walking to another level by offering "dog-running" to some of our clients,
as many breeds need a lot more exercise than they can get with a walk alone. A
local dog-trainer is calling it "Urban Canine Syndrome." She comes across many
so-called "hard to train" dogs, and says that the main difficulty is that the
dogs are so pent up from not getting enough exercise that they cannot focus on
getting trained.
We would like to know if runners from your club would be interested? This would
be a paying position.
Please let us know if you think there might be interest amongst your group!
Thank you,
Alexandra Bassett
Kennel Assistant
Kiki's Pet Hotel
80 Washington Ave.
Brooklyn, NY 11215
(718) 222-5585
Tomorrow the weather will be fine to run. Don't wear too much clothing if you join us at our regular run (9.00 am, 15th street and Prospect park West).
Wow, I've yet to meet ADam, but congratulations on the great time!
Best,
Colleen the Brooklyn Newbie

Thank you for all the great advice. A marathon is one
of those things I dont believe you can get to much
advice on. This is great. I like the idea of cycling
as an alternative and building up my upper body seems
very smart. Right now my cross training is really
Yoga...and those workouts are actually extreamly
intense. I plan on running a bunch of races and
hopefully at least a couple half marathons before
going. Im kind of adicited to the idea of getting
there so I know im in for an intense 18 weeks but im
ready for it.
Thanks again!

Hi all,
Tomorrow I will be there (unless lightning strikes, whatch this space) at the usual place and time (9:00 am). Everybody is invited.
I plan to do at least one loop slow, picking up afterwards. A real long run seems not yet on the books for me.
I would stil like to get some more photo's from our runners at the marathon or other places, preferably whearing the club colors. Brightroom links are fine too.

Hi, just wanted to give some additional knee advice based on my past knee problems, which have ranged from ITB to Runner's Knee etc. If you go to the gym, most likely they have physical Therapy tubes: long styrofoam-looking noodles that are very hard. Lie on your hip, put the tube under the area that is bothering you, and then "roll" on it, pressing all of your bodyweight into the tube. This stimulates blood to the area and loosens the tightness.
If you don't have the Tubing, take a tennis ball and do the same thing. You can also do this seated, just use the ball to massage very hard in circular motions.
Cheers,
Colleen
PS Anyone doing Rock and Roll Arizona? I signed up to have a "fun" marathon before Boston....but thus far I'm going alone.

If you're injured, I thinking stepping back a bit on the training is probably good. You can run thru discomfort, but you should not run thru pain. As you start to feel better you can increase your milage pretty steadily.
For my training, I was around 10 miles, which felt long, when I started training for the NYC Ing mara. I steadily increased by about a mile or two each weekend for my long runs, and did a few shorter speadier runs thru the week. I race a lot, so I was racing most every weekend in one road race or another, anything from 5K to half mara and several duathlons. I also cross trained quite a bit. More than they usually say to, in fact. But since I do a lot of duathlons, I needed the cycling. this would probably be great for your injury. Also, on days I did not feel like cycling or running, I lifted light weights at the gym or did the stair master or various gym classes that NYSC offered. I was at the gym a lot and I think it helped cause my upper body did not get tired during the marathon, which a lot of people have problems with since they only run. Your arms can eventually feel like dead weight. I did not
have this problem.
Anyway, one piece of advice I can give is that you should only increase your long runs by about 10 percent each week. So if you're running 10 miles now, next time only do 11 and so on. After 14 you can add a mile or two at a time, but you can get very easy injuries (like shin splints especially, which I was prone to) if you increase too much. Best advice I ever got was slow increase of milage and do a lot more stretching before and after the runs than normal. Once I followed the stretching advice, my injuries vanished almost magically. It was great!

Hey Dave! I'm planning on New Orleans if the funds
are right. It will be my first so I want it to be
somewhere special. Is the one in March in Cape May?
Let me ask you. I have run 10 miles twice in the
last 3 weeks. which was a long run for me. I am now
starting to train based on a traing schedule I found
in this Hal Higdon book. It actually starts me off
with less miles then I am capable of. Should I step
backwards and follow his schedule or should I keep
building on the 10 miles I have now. maybe since I am
a little hurt steping back a week would hurt me too
much in the long run. So was NY your first marathon?
I want to do that one next year for sure.

My names Ray. Im not an official BRRC member yet,
but plan to make it out to a practice soon. I was
hopeing I could get some advice on a Knee Injury I have.
I have been in the process of running pretty hard. I
ran 10 miles on Tuesday. My knee has been hurting
and im not sure how I should take care of it. The pain
kinda comes from the side of the knee and I can pin
point a sore area by pressing around it. Ive kept
running on it since but last night it slowed me down a
bit and was kind of sore. I don't want to stop running
but I was wondering if that was the best way to treat it.
I have a race through the NYRR Sunday the Race to
Deliver and would like to say that it wont affect me
too much but if there is anything I can do to treat it
between now and then I will definitely work with it.
I am also at the beginning of marathon training and
don't want to get behind on that as well.
I iced it last night and didnt do any running. it seems
slightly better today but I still notice that it is there.
Any help anyone cane give me would be very much appreciated.

Stephanie:
The F train stop at Prospect Park-15th St. is the best. It's about 10 feet from
our Saturday-Sunday (9 am) meeting spot, and a 2-minute jog from 9th St., our
Tues-Thurs (6:45 pm) meeting spot.
For the 10K in December, when you pick up your bib, please ask them to add you
as "BRRC" in the team category of the entry.
Hope to see you soon -- it's a lot of fun to run with other people.

Hi-
I have recently joined the list. Can anyone tell me what the closest
subway stop is to the meeting location for the weekday runs? I am still
fairly new to Brooklyn and, well, by nature fuzzy on
location/directions in general. I thought I might try the group runs...I
have always run by myself but thought it would be fun to join a group.
I have always just run for fun, but have actually entered my first race
(eek!)- the NYRR 10K in December.
Thanks,
Stephanie
Last year there were a few winter races in Prospect Park that I think BRRC put on, I Know Steve was there... I think one might have been called the Peter Rabbit or something...
Anyone know if these are planned or in the works for this winter?

The closest stop is either the 7th ave stop on the F, then walk uphill towards the park along 9th street (be on the front of the train for the shortest walk), or the 15th street Prospect Park stop, also on the F. Get off at that stop and walk up Prospect Park West to the intersetion of PPW and 9th street.
Or anything that goes to Grand Army Plaza, then it's just a 5-10 minute jog along PPW to 9th street.
Those are the three I know.
Welcome to the club!

It seems "your duty to the team" to write your story too, it can be added to the page without problems. If you simply login, you should be able to add photo's too (not more than 100 Kb per photo). Otherwise, send them, with photo's to the group, they will get posted.
I expect to find there at least 28 stories, please find also your own title.
Perhaps I could accept a joint story for Brent and John, although they were separated for some miles.
You can start to blog your marathon training schedule 2007 now at the same place.
Just as a sidekick and to make life simpler, the new firefox spell check "on the fly" which is very convenient for posting on a wiki or writing e-mails (download it at www.mozilla.com. If you are not allowed to install software in your computer, use the version at http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable
).
Just thought I'd drop a note to everyone now that the marathon is done. I had a GREAT time! It was nowhere near as painful or impossible as I had originally anticipated.
My goal was to run in under 3:40 or as close to 3:30 as I could and to beat my old roommate (who was on his 4th marathon) and I did both, running 3:32 for my debut marathon and beating my old roommie by 6 minutes ---- he was able to set a PR so it was agood race for both of us!. I think the training must have
paid off, I keep a cool easy pace and never hit the wall. The first 22 miles were actually no sweat (well I'm sure I was pretty sweaty, but it was not too hard).
At mile 23 my legs we getting pretty stiff and sore and overall fatigued gradually. Miles 24-25 seemed to be the slowest, but I never had to walk. I was able to kick it up for the last 800M or so and finished strong and smiling. My girlfriend was on the bleachers and took a video, I was actually running a lot faster than I felt!
People who had run some marathons before told me I would hate the last few miles and curse the marathon, but within a few days or even later in the evening I'd be planning for my next. This was not the case for me, however. I started planning for my next when I hit mile 22 and was still feeling great. I never hated it, I loved every mile, every minute and every split. I can't wait to run
my next and I'm thinking something in March. But first, I'm looking forward to a month or two of nice and easy 7 milers and much shorter races!
