Maybe some of those fast local runners should apply to these four
high-performance distance running camps.
Anyone know more about
this?

Runners Club Makes Donation
By
FRANK LITSKY
In
a fund-raising move to further the development of distance runners in the
United States, New York Road Runners said it found 200 people who paid $2,500
each last year for a special entry to run in its major race, the New York City
Marathon. Yesterday, the club announced it had donated $240,000 of that money
to four high-performance distance running camps.
At the
Track Writers Association weekly luncheon, Mary Wittenberg, the club's
president and chief executive, said an equal amount had been given to the New Balance
Track and FieldCenter
in Upper Manhattan to help develop young
runners.
I assume so. but if you want to confirm, you must call Steve Bonal at
917-238-9447. He is in charge of the bus and he is not online, so he won't ever
see your e-mail.

Dave et al.:
The 10-15 minute guideline is pretty sensible. My caution would be that this is
your first marathon. If you go out at 7:30 pace, that would be 3:17 and should
be very comfortable for you. Your goal should be to have the first 1/2 be
effortless. If you feel tired at the half, that's a problem. Almost all of the
effort should come after the 20-mile mark.
Watch out for the first downhill on the Verrazano -- that is the biggest
downhill in the race and could be a problem in having you go too fast. Don't get
too excited early in the race; you'll need that energy later on.
Good luck!
John

This will be my first marathon and I've been told to double my most recent half
marathon time and add anything from 10-15 minutes to that, to get my full mara
time. Now, I'm not sure if this formula works or not, so I thought I'd get
everyone's opinions and general thoughts.

stronger since my recent months of training.

I think the formula works more or less. Aim for it, but take at least 15 even 20 minutes for it being NYmarathon, never breathe hard, and you will die after 20 miles anyway, whether you are fast or slow.
Look, last year I did 3:57, with cramps form mile 2. I run faster now and I aim for 3:30, based on my times at the half (1:34:40), and you are definetely faster than me. I might have to scale back, but what the heck. If I start aiming for 3:40, and feel strong at the end, I can never recuperate the lost time.
I'm sure I'm not the only one mildly obsessing and day-dreaming about the upcoming NYC marathon...
I've recently been trying to determine what kind of pace I should run it in. I just went to jack rabbit and told them to sell me somethin good for winter running, that would last and is cheap. I don't know what make they sold me, but is was rather cheap and I use it for 2 years now.
Also, as far as clothing, I've found Underarmor has a great selection of winter wear: Tights, long sleeve technical shirts that keep you dry, thin but warm gloves of the same material, little stocking caps etc. In fact, some of it is so good it's almost too warm!
Yes, group runs still happen in the cold. However, the core group will most likely not be around for the next few weeks after the marathon. The group runs will probably be smaller, and should pick up
again by late November.
If you want a BRRC shirt, but can't make the meetings, I usually bring some with me to the group runs on weekends.
As for clothing for winter running, check out link below, they have some good recommendations.

Thanks for the info. It's definitely an incentive to run the Baltimore Marathon.
Heck, one reason I liked doing the Nike races was for the Dri-Fit shirt.

Most running stores or sporting goods stores carry it. Here's a link to their web site.
FYI, if anyone runs the baltimore marathon next year, the race shirts are underarmor (it's based out of baltimore) and REALLY nice.

After talking to Steve, he will be departing at 5:45am
from circles. This is final, the bridge closes at 7am
and it'll take sometime to get over with the expected
traffic congestion.
I strongly suggest you bring a pillow and super charge
your ipods, especially to the first timers, don't get
sucked into the atmosphere at Fort Worthworth and
start spending energy walking around. Save it for the
Bronx (mile 20)
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact
Steve directly, 917-238-9447.
Good luck!

Dear unknown person:
Just come tonight at 6:45 to the Lafayette statue at 9th Street and the park.
There will be at least one loop of the park, maybe two. The pace is usually
somewhere around 8 minutes per mile. What is your name? If I know it, I can
alert people to look out for you. Otherwise, ask whoever's standing around if
they are with the Brooklyn Road Runners.

Anyway, I use it whenever I train and during races. It's an awesome tool, telling you your pace, time, distance and a plethra of other useful items, based off of satelite information.
If anyone is interested in it, let me know, I'm going to list in on craigslist if no one in the club wants it first (we can figure out a good price). It's in absolute mint shape and I still have the original box, cables, charger and software CD (if you want to upload and track your progress on your computer).
Has anyone received their registration cards yet? (These are needed to pick up race numbers at the expo.)
Supposedly they were mailed out on the 13th but I have not receive mine yet.

Folks,
We'll sort this out before the end of the week. I'm working with Alison Mayer from the NYRR. She's cordinating the private buses dropping off runners by the Fort Wort Worths plaza in S.I.
Our bus like all other private buses, will be getting a placard to place on the front window, that will allow for it to drop off runners by the plaza. Now, the NYPD is adament about closing the bridge to ALL inbound traffic, by 7am. Thus the reason why NYRR, wants all buses to drop off its runners by 6:30am or earlier.
I will talk to Steve ONLY once I've gotten final details from Alison concerning the logistics. We'll communicate the information to those taking the bus well in advance.

I'm not suggesting I have a problem with the time (I actually thought the time he told me was too late) I just wanted to be sure. Also, he told me 15 bucks when we spoke last week, which is what I paid, even though I am a member, so something needs to be straightened out before there is any more confusion.
hope everyone took advantage of the nice weather for some good runs this weekend!
1. The earlier time is much more reasonable. The 6:30 time is way, way too late unless you want to either be DQ'd from the race or have to walk all the way over the bridge.
2. I have no idea of the price. Geert's # is 718-789-2482, Steve's is 917-238-9447.
Call the two of them to figure all this out. (I'm not taking the bus, but I do read the nyrr.org website very carefully.)

I have not recived my card, nor have any of my friends that I've checked with, so I'm not too concerned yet. Maybe it will be in my mail box when I get home this evening.
**Also, if anyone is interested, I have a Garmin GPS running watch that I am no longer using (I've recently upgraded to the one with a heart rate monitor).
Thanks.

(ps. I, too, paid $15 but I'm not overly concerned with the price difference)

When I spoke with steve last week to confirm my place on the bus, he said it was leaving at 6:30. Anyone know which time is accurate? Also, Steve told me the member price was 15 bucks, so I sent a check to the BRRC PO Box.
Verizano bridge closes at 6:00 sharp, so the minute of departure is non-negotiable. To the contrary, I would like to push everybody to be there at 5:30 so we can leave at that time. It seems a good idea to leave when 90 % of the runners are on the bus?
For members, the cost will be 10 bucks, non members pay 15 USD. Contact Steve Steve at 917.238.9447 to reserve a spot.
This is your best bet at the best price to get there
