Hi Steve:

Thanks again for a job well done.  I wish to ask permission to set up a table with my energy products which I can share with you this weekend to taste and try out.

Give me a call in the next few days.

Happy running.

Hallo again,

I just talked to Steve, the President of our club at 917 238 9447, you
can contact him. He will have the last word on this.

We should discuss sponsorship policies for the website. We started a
discussion on the "members only" part of the wiki. (those who don't have
a login, please ask).

"There are lots of ways to to make taking money from business and giving
them free advertising in return somewhat less offensive than having to
rename yourself. The first thing to do is set parameters around who you
feel comfortable helping out and who you do not: i.e. local Brooklyn
businesses v. multinational corporations, etc. Next, agree upon what
you're willing to do for them: rename yourself v. put logo on singlet v.
website/newsletter mention. After that send a letter followed by a call
or visit (if it's a local place) to the manager detailing what it is
that you're seeking and what you're willing to give in return". (wiki)
http://snowwhite.incubations.com/vqwiki-2.7.6/private/Wiki?SingletSponsorship

Anybody more ideas for a "policy"? Personally, I think we could have
some non-intrusive adds (like brooklyn tri-club), for local business. It
would be nice if the site at least pays for itself and brings in some
money.

Yes, I've fixed it but my work servers are undergoing a massive move and lockdown.  So, I'd really recommend that we move things quickly to the new servers.  The only reason I donated them was to show what a real website can do.  But I can't really donate them forever.

Thanks.

Also for the non-techies, don't worry Geert just made up all that stuff, it really doesn't mean anything, just there to confuse the non-techies.

Word.  I have no idea what any of that means.  Whatever Geert and Ralph think is best is cool with me.  If the extra $120/year will save folks a lot of time tinkering, it's probably worth it.  That said, I don't think any of us knows what our budget is.

Pmwiki can do Mysql, dokuwiki I think not. I choose them for it. If you know someone who knows to work with Moinmoin or twiki, they seem the best, with Wyswiyg. I cannot get python nor perl (they want you to rename the reference where perl is on every page of the program) do what I want on my apache.

Geert.

I am too busy at work. It will kill me.

We should speed up this process because I may not be able to donate my server for much longer.

Apparently pmwiki and dokuwiki (the second one is not bad) are installed by simply dropping in the apache file (I just did it) the config files need only a few renamings and it works.

Java and JSP is the way to go for sure.  Now, it's only a matter seeing how
well this particular site supports it.

Dear all
We have done some more in debth marked research on webhosting.

Indeed: while I was working on a website for work, I saw that getting things
like a calendar and wiki working and maintaining them without the java tools
we have now is not simple at all. This while with our current website (with
java) it is a breeze.

We found a solution which has an additional cost: Lunarpages.

Lunarpages has a normal price for base service (7.99 for a year) and asks
only 2 extra dollars per month for enabling java.

this means 10 USD /month or 120 USD per year. We get also a 1 month money
back guarantee

In exchange they are rated as one of the top 3 for services on review sites
and add functionalities to their site  that are not easy to install on your
own. I don't want to get you dreaming, because only transferring will cost
us a month of work, and new things will have to wait, but they have
blogsoftware installed, photogallery, and whatmore.
Just check it out www.lunarpages.com

Maybe it is a geek thing but I would go for it.

Once it runs we should make a tour of the shops in Park Slope to get some
advertising: it must be possible to have at least our site paid by
advertising

If you don't mind, I will contact Steve this Saturday for this amazing
amount of money so we can proceed.

Great!  Do they use MySQL or simple text file.  MySQL is usually more complicated but faster.

We should speed up this process because I may not be able to donate my server for much longer.

As it is queens half next week, and it too late to add long runs for the

What about doing 5 minutes fast - 5 minutes slow for 3 repetitions in

Subject: [BrooklynRoadRunners] WEB-hosting: our own server

Dear all,

Ralph and me (Geert) have been working on the website and need to take it further now: hosting on a real server. Choices must be made, and you should come back to me with your choice. If there is no interest, well. let's not go there yet.

We need to get an answer here, so please tell us which choice you support

Introduction
The website looks better and better. This is why we should now take the next step and have it on a real commercial server instead of just privately on the Ralph's server. This will authorize us to generate more traffic too. Moreover, we all know Ralph cannot keep doing everything always.

So we must select a web hosting service.

There are some thousands of them, and every selection is difficult.

Selection of servers:
The main issues to watch for are:

Features:
  • The current server has a database possibility, Java and Tomcat. Chinese it might be, but thanks to it we have these interactive Wiki and Calendar. Commercial servers giving Java and Tomcat are normally for 16-18 USD/month, except for one charging only 3.99 per month.
  • Most provide you with PHP and MYSQL database possibility: it works, but simply copying the whole site will not be possible: probably we will have to move one by one every page to the new software.
  • For the rest, the basic package is essentially the same
Service:

It seems some of them just don't work. others work now and then, some even take your money and run. Most however, deliver stable service, help when needed and regular invoices.

Price:

Prices don't vary that much. Most are anyway resellers, all have the same type of costs. Some are out of the range, and importantly cheaper.  You  wonder why. It might have something to do with reliability.

Firms: :

A rankings and reviews  can be found by typing "web hosting"in google. As they differ importantly from each other, I have some doubts of payment related reviews. Prices vary form 3.95 to 15 per month.

As there is so much choice, there are 2 we know from experience that work:

  • Ipowerweb: 7.95 USD per month (pay 12 months) 6.95 per month (pay 24 months) : one of the biggest
  • Omnis: 6.95 USD/month (pay 12 months) not small neither

If we want to have an easy transfer of the website, we need java hosting, which is normally 16-20 USD per month, but visionwebhosting or astrawebhosting does it for 3.99 per month pay 12 months plus a 15 USD setup fee.

Choices

I rank them according to what I would do, thus influencing democracy.

Option 1
: go for the known get a web hosting service form Omnis. (Or Ipowerweb if people have strong feelings and contribute)

Option 2: take a risk but have an easy transfer of the website and cheap hosting: visionwebhosting

Taking it further:

Steve says we can afford it, and is prepared to pay, however, I did not pay me dues for the year yet, if there are 3 more we could collect membership fees this way and transfer the site next week.

Andrew hi,

I am responding to this email 'illegally' as I run with the Brooklyn Road
Runners in Prospect Park.
Even though the weather is obviously similar as in Central Park year round,
we Brooklyn Road Runners know why we choose this park to run in (or
Brooklyn on a quiet sunday morning for that matter). Crowds like I
experienced last sunday in Central Park are very rare here.

It seems to me that your article could not be complete without including a
section on people who think they have found a good solution: the park might
be somewhat smaller, the amount of personal space you have is much bigger
year round. And, as the other Borough might seem far away for die-hard
Manhattanites, both the parks are within 90 minutes running distance from
each other!

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at 347-200-4767 or
respond by emailing the brooklynroadrunners yahoo group for information from
other runners.

RYE DERBY INVITATION:

Brookly road runners: You (and your families) are invited to join us for the eighteenth annual Rye Derby which is scheduled for April 30, 2006.  Established with the assistance of champion miler and Rye home owner Eamonn Coghlan, the 5 mile road race and one mile kids fun run is organized by and is for the benefit of the Rye YMCA.  The Derby is a significant event on the local calendar and enjoys widespread family participation in the community.

The 5 Mile race is one of the most competitive races at the distance in the tri-state running calendar.  Previous recipients of the Eamonn Coghlan Award, made to the overall male and female winners, include Olympic marathoners John Treacy (silver medalist) and Anne Marie Lauck as well as top Kenyan runner Julius Kibet . Apart from top elite runners, the race attracts a large field of age group competitors as well as recreational athletes attracted by a fast course through scenic Rye.

Prize money is awarded to the top 3 male and female runners ($600 down to $250) and awards are made to age group winners (10 year age categories) as well as top local male and female finishers.

The race finishes at the Rye YMCA, located on Locust Avenue and is followed by a generous post race barbeque in addition to children’s activities and local merchant exhibits.

Rye is accessible by Metro North as well as three major highways (I95, I287 and the Hutchinson Parkway).

The one mile fun starts at 1.00pm and the 5 Mile race starts at 1.45pm.

Online registration is accessible at http://www.active.com (search for rye derby under running) or click on the following link: http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1298957
