These races *used* to be called the Wednesday Night
Speed Series and were held in Prospect Park and on
Staten Island, alternating weeks (every other week in
Prospect Park). In years past, they've been held
during the late summer, generally July/August. There
were three or four races in each location.
They are not yet on the nyrr.org calendar for 2006.
They may not be held this year, although LAST year
they weren't added until late in the season. I think
they only gave a month or so notice before they put
them on the calendar last year. Here's hoping they
return at some point!

I remember talk (and a flyer?) about a series of weekday evening 5Ks in Prospect
Park. Does anyone know the date and time for these?
PS- I'm going for the biggest cry baby club award this year. I've got super
shin pain (likely stress fracture) and need to take a couple weeks off. No
groups runs for me.

BronxCommunity College will be
holding its 28th Annual 10K Race and 2 mile Fitness Walk on Saturday, May 6, 2006.
It’s a great way to celebrate spring and to get in shape for summer.
We would be grateful if you would post the attached flyer at
your organization. Also attached is a copy of the application form.
Feel free to duplicate both the flyer and application forms. Call me at
(718) 289-5151 or email me, carol.white@...,
if you have any questions.
I expect people to show up with the four wheel inliners. The faster people
on tuesday night use five wheels. But for the specifics, I would contact
them through their website.
good luck.

Hi all,
Spring is coming and so it the new skate season.
I am going to pick up skating - while waiting to be running again - which I have
never done before. Anybody interested in joining me?
There is a good skateshop close to Prospect Park, which rents skates and gear.
And there are lots of (free) lessons coming up in Central Park, starting this
weekend.
My goal is to eventually make it to the Wednesday Night Skate, a fun skate event
every Wednesday on Manhattan.

Dear Brooklyn Road Runners,
I am writing today as a representative
of New Yorkers for Parks, the only independent watchdog for all the City’s
parks, playgrounds, and open spaces. As a runner, it is important to have
greener, cleaner, and safer areas to run in. I thought the Brooklyn Road
Runners Club might be interested in becoming involved in advocating for a
citywide parks agenda to benefit not only our parks, but all the city’s natural
and open spaces.
On Wednesday, May 10th,
2006, New Yorkers for Parks will be sponsoring its fourth annual Parks Advocacy
Day. It is an opportunity to meet face-to-face with your Council Members
to let them know about your local concerns as well as promote a citywide agenda
for all our city’s parks. I
am attaching a flyer to this email, which you can feel free to post, publish
and distribute!
Due to the efforts of more than 500 New
Yorkers at the 2005 Parks Advocacy day, the Parks Department saw its first
significant increase in staffing in 20 years. Plus the crime bill
passed-the NYPD has started to track crimes in our parks, which will translate
into safer parks for all New Yorkers.
I truly hope you can join us on this
most important day for parks. Please feel free to contact me if you have
any questions or need more information. You and your members and
neighbors can register immediately for Parks Advocacy Day at www.ny4p.org.

On Sunday, I would like to do a long slow run starting at 9:00 am,

Greetings, Marisa and Dave:
On Saturday and Sunday mornings the group usually
meets at 9 AM at the Prospect Park entrance at
Prospect Park West and 15th Street. There is
confirmed to be a group of us on both days this coming
weekend.
On occasion, nobody will be there. Generally this is
because there is a race in Central Park (about once
per month) in which the team is participating.
Tuesday and Thursday nights the team meets at 6:45 at
the statue at Prospect Park West and 9th Street.
These groups generally grow in size with the arrival
of daylight savings time (now only about 10 days
away!).
We look forward to seeing you guys on the roads!

Hey Everyone,
This is just a reminder about the ProspectPark Duathlon training event that's taking place this Saturday Morning at 8am. The event is a non formal 3/12/3 (run/bike/run) duathlon, with timing, transition, etc. If you don't feel that you're prepared to cover that distance, don't fret, this is a practice event to see where your fitness is at this point of the season. For those of you new to multisport racing, this is a great way to see just how painful it is to run after biking! More information about the event can be found in the 'files' section of our Yahoo! group. Here is a link to there: http://f6.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/cGYhRLePlz_4msa1I20zqLH_p3kPhYm3t_nfec6_1CgXB4NEdI5uCqrsLVCtk2gOJ_a2sIdHXrFZgPAi-8q_ew/ppdu_back.doc
The transition area (start and finish as well) is going to be at the Willink entrance to the park, which is the entrance sort of across the roadway from the boathouse about a half mile from the base of the hill when traveling in the park against traffic. There are bathrooms very close to this entrance. The event will be supported by City Tri (
www.citytri.com) with timing, some volunteers, running route arrows, Gatorade, etc. We are in need of some volunteers to help out for this event, if you're available please let me know. Volunteers are mainly needed to help things get underway and make sure that everyone part! icipating in the event is well supported. Volunteers are asked to report at 7am at the Willink entrance to prepare for the event. Participants are asked to report no later than 7:30 to ensure that the event goes off promptly at 8.
If you have any questions, or if I've forgotten something (which I'm sure I have) please ask!
All the best,
Jonathan

Most people probably take the subway. The F train goes right there.
And most people meet up at the end near the buses that have your stuff.
Good luck!

Chris,
The book that worked very well for me (as well as some
others I know) is called the "Daniels' Running
Formula" by author Jack Daniels (nothing to do with
the whiskey). It covers training from the mile to the
marathon and all popular distances in between.
The suggested workouts are VERY tough, but they can be
modified extensively to fit your training level, time
availability, and motivation level. :) It will at
least give you a framework that you can use to plan
for a successful race.
I got my copy from Amazon - there is now a second
edition (which is called the same thing, and I also
own) which is not significantly different from the
first (ie, you could probably get by with the first
edition if you can find one really cheap and used).
Good luck! We hope to see you out there for the
Brooklyn Half on Saturday!

Brent, Back in January during a group run, I remember you recommending a fairly common running book which included a program you followed when training for a marathon. It was a book, and you recommended it above all others.
I forgot the title -- do you remember it?
Any suggestions from other group memebers? I'm running my first marathon at the end of May and I've so far I've just been training distance and repeats for the half-marathon distance . . .

It's such a beautiful day. Everyone should get out. My friend and I plan to do the Prospect Park steps near the south end between 5:30pm and 6:30pm today. Everyone is welcome.

How do we get to the Brooklyn Half?
Do we meet there somewhere?

It's me, Sara Niccoli. Okay, so many of you know that I'm running the Brooklyn
1/2 on March 18. This presents a fun opportunity for Families United for Racial
and Economic Equality (FUREE) to raise some very much needed cash, you to
satisfy your sadist tendencies and yet feel like you've done a good deed, and me
to run fast and feel superior.
Here's how it works: you bet the over on a time of 1:37:00. If I finish in less
than 1 hour 37 minutes you pay up to FUREE, supporting an awesome, awesome group
of families organizing to change policies that perpetuate racism, classism, and
poverty in New York City. Your bet will provide the incentive I need to pace
just over a 7-minute mile for 13.1 miles. That might be easy for some people
but for me it's going to be pretty f*n painful. So Rae, remember when I whacked
you over the head with that stupid doll? Marie, when I stole your I Heart
Horses socks? Sadie, when I took your car and lost the keys? Think of this as
payback.
So reply to this e-mail with your bet. Whatever you're comfortable with is
great, but more is better- duh. And get this, you can make good in person at a
FUREE fundraiser disguised as an "all out booty shakin' lovefest" at Southpaw on
Wednesday March 22nd!* (If you can't make it, you can just donate through their
website or mail a check.)
What happens if I come in over 1:37? Well you win. But you don't really win.
I suppose we can negotiate a nice thing that I'll have to do for you. Or you
can just come to the party and I'll buy you a drink and you can give your
donation to FUREE anyway.
To learn about FUREE, check out their website:
http://www.furee.org/index.html. {Remember when I was 6 months pregnant and I
went to Texas for actions at Halliburton and Bush's ranch? These are the folks
that organized and took care of me}.
*The party starts at 7 pm on Wednesday March 22nd
Southpaw is 125 Fifth Ave. at St. John's in Brooklyn.
It's such a beautiful day. Everyone should get out.
My friend and I plan to do the Prospect Park steps near the south end
between 5:30pm and 6:30pm today. Everyone is welcome.
