Cardiac Screening
We were recently contacted by Roosevelt Hospital about their cardiac screening
program:
Every year bikers of all abilities experience cardiac related traumas that could
have easily been avoided by screening for preexisting risk factors. The Division
of Cardiology at St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospitals has created a unique program
dedicated to reducing cardiovascular risks associated with participation in
competitive and recreational sports and exercise. Dr. Merle Myerson, herself an
avid runner, is a board-certified cardiologist and Director of the Pre-Exercise
Heart Screening Program, the only program of its kind in New York. She has
worked with athletes of all levels, from beginner to professional, and is
actively involved with other athletic organizations in the City.
Club member Dr. Sam Altstein (who is again running this year's NYC Marathon -
good luck Sam!) is the medical director of a similar facility with the newest
CAT scan. Sam can be reached at INNER IMAGING, 307 East 63rd Street,
212-991-5445
If you'd like to learn more about her pre-exercise heart screening services you
can also contact Dr. Merle Myerson, Roosevelt Hospital
425 West 59th Street, Suite 9D, (between 9th and 10th Avenues),(212) 492-5550
I'd like to reserve a spot on the bus for me and my husband, Craig Richards, and have just put my check in the mail. It might take a little while to get there, as we're mailing it from Canada. (We moved Sept. 1st from Park Slope to Toronto but are coming back for the marathon and staying in the old neighborhood).
Looking forward,
Hannah

The BRRC will again be offering a bus to the marathon start this year. We are still working out the details, but assume that it will leave from 15th street and Prospect Park West around 6:30 AM (the Verizano Bridge closes to vehicular traffic at 7:00 AM) and the cost will be in the range of $20 for members and $25 for non members.

8 BRRC runners have met the guidelines I forwarded last week. I have given the list of all 8 to the NYRR and have reached out to 6 of the runners. I have no contact information for:
*Jessica Chatfield; she has run for BRRC for quite a while, but I've never known anyone who has met her.
*Andrei Lyoshin (lives in Philadelphia) ; Andrei we know, but his contact in the club was Alex Leuchanka, who has since moved away.
If you have phone or email info on either of them, or if you can track such info down, either forward it to me or contact them and let them know that they have a special starting place in the NYC marathon and should contact me.
Either call Steve Bonal at 917-238-9447 or email Michael Balbos (his email is on the cc line here).

However, the next team race is Grete's 1/2 marathon in Central Park on Saturday, Oct. 3, and I will be running that one. I encourage all BRRC runners to pick that race if it's a choice between Grete's and the Staten Island 1/2, which is the next weekend. If you're running New York, it gives you an extra week of rest after a hard effort. If you're running Queens & can handle a second 1/2, you can do both.
Good luck to everyone in their training & racing this fall. And I encourage everyone to come out to the 4 weekly group runs (Tu-Th-Sat-Sun). We've been having some good workouts lately, and if more people show up, we can have both a good-sized speed group and a regular-paced group in the same group run.

Now that I'm ramping up my marathon training, I'm looking to do some
spin classes for cross training.
I don't need a full gym membership, but would love to find a place in
the Slope that allows you to do pay-per-class spinning.
Does anyone have a place that they can recommend?
thanks,
JR
