Unfortunately, I don't think posting on Feb. 28 was very useful for getting
people to come to the race the very next day, especially as it was in faraway
Washington Heights.

BRRC had a dismal showing at Coogan's: We didn't have a legal women's team (3
showed up), and we had 6 men, who finished in 20th place, our worst showing in
many years.

For the Scotland Run, on April 11, please enter the race soon, as it is a capped
race. The Colon Challenge filled up 3 weeks ahead of time, and that wasn't a
team race, so if you snooze, you'll lose the chance to run this race.

I stepped down as men's team captain as of January of this year after 11 years'
of doing it; the position remains unfilled, and anyone who wants to volunteer
for it is free to do so. If you want to discuss what it entails, Steve Bonal's
phone number is 917-238-9447, and mine is 718-469-0589.

I've enjoyed doing it, and it has really kept me in touch with virtually all
active BRRCers, as they can attest. (I probably barely escaped arrest for
harassment and stalking!) However, I'm now back running my other volunteer
organization, the union at my workplace, and doing both is too much.

I will continue to run all the team races and talk them up at the group runs, so
the next captain will have a very active informal assistant.

On Saturday many BRRC runners will no doubt be running the Snowflake race. I won't be, but I'll be at the usual Saturday group-run meeting place (15th St. & the entrance to the park). I'll then be running clockwise instead of the usual counter-clockwise, so that we will be able to cheer the racers on. We can next turn downhill onto the transverse that the racers are running uphill on, to catch them a 2nd time.

Then we could head to the other transverse where the race finishes and do a warmdown with some of the BRRC finishers.

Good luck to everyone racing on Saturday!

Tomorrow I'll be out at the group run at 9 for an easy hour run, then I'm running the Annual BRRC Valentine's Day 5K. Last time I ran it there was 2 feet of snow on the ground, so this race should be easy!

Signup tomorrow starts at 8:30 and is at Knights of Columbus, 10th Avenue just a couple doors down off Prospect Park SW. The race starts in the park near Bartell Pritchard (15th Street).

Call Steve at 917-238-9447 if you need more details.

Update: last night I was late, as I predicted, and ran the other way (clockwise) so I'd run into the group (I was wearing the bright-green BRRC singlet so even newcomers would recognize me). Alas, I saw not a single BRRC runner.

Our website, brooklynroadrunners.com, has all the details on group runs, but here they are:

*Tues-Thurs: meetup is at 6:45 pm at 9th St. and Prospect Park West (by the Lafayette statue). Route is counterclockwise loops of the park. In warmer weather we sometimes have speedwork sessions on Tuesdays, depending on whether those who show up want to do it. Here's where numbers help: if we have, say, 10-12 runners and 5-6 want to do speedwork and the rest don't, each group does its own thing. If you have only 2 or 3 runners, and 1 or 2 want to do the speedwork, the rule is you don't do it -- no runner is left behind.

*Sat-Sun: meetup is at 9 am at 15th and PPW (across the street from the movie theaters). Route is same as Tu-Th, but potential is there for longer runs. Sometimes, mostly in warmer weather, we do speedwork on Saturdays.

Here's the general problem: All of our runs are as scheduled (ie, they are never canceled), but if a newcomer shows up and sees that no one is there, what good does the scheduling do? I've talked to others who have been "solo" group runners (George, Taylor, Elias), and it's very discouraging. You come out in the cold, wait around for a while, and then do your run alone, which you could have done anytime you wanted, and without waiting around.

This is a plea for a collective sense of responsibility on the part of BRRC runners, especially the veterans. Even if these times and days aren't your favorite time to run, try to do the group runs sometimes. If we can get a couple dozen people who make it somewhat regularly, then we'd always have a few there; as it is, there are only a few semi-regular weekday people and a few semi-regular weekend people, and if they don't show up, the group run is literally invisible.

I'm in Connecticut this weekend, so I won't be at the Sat-Sun runs. I'll be there on Tuesday night at 6:45, no matter what the weather is like.

Forgive me if I've asked the group this already, but...

I got into the "preliminary" Empire State Building run-up, which is a week from today.  Apparently the difference between this one and the regular one is that there are no individual nor age group awards, not that I'd even consider myself a contender, but anyway...

I've never done a stair race, so I'm looking for any advice.  I've been told to use the railing as much as I can, but has anyone else run this before or are any other BRRC runners doing it?

Lemme know!

Hello, BRRC runners. I wanted to issue a call to get some people out for the group runs, especially on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

It seems like everyone's New Year's resolution was to stop coming to the group runs! I've been the only person out for the last 3 evening runs, and it's lonely out there. I can't make it tonight, but let's see some of you out there again. I hope to be out on Thursday (but may be late).

Perhaps I should buy a lottery ticket with 8's on it!

Then my next question is if anyone is running the Bronx half who may be able to give me a life. I can bring the coffee, Gu, whatever you want.

Thanks all.

Kerry:

Come to any of our group runs (Tu-Th-Sa-Su), and we'll be happy to share our
knowledge about training -- for free!

I'm at almost every group run, and I've done dozens of marathons (2:49 pr)and
worked with several different marathon programs; many other veteran marathoners
also come to the group runs.

Hope to see you soon!

Hi all,

I'm training for the Big Sur Marathon on April 26.

I've run 2 marathons in the past at 4 hours and 15 minutes. I'd love to
break 4:00 this time around.

If you have a running coach that you recommend, books that have been
helpful, or any other tips please send them my way!

Thanks!

Kerry
