I'm going to head over to the SI half early (7:30 ferry) and try to
get in 7-8 miles before the race to get in at least a full 20 run
before the marathon. E-mail me if you are interested in joining. I'm
leaving from Park Slope.

Over the past few weeks I've finally buckled down and run some mile intervals.
I've figured out a fairly solid, easy mile course in the park and thought I'd
share it if anyone else is looking for one. I checked it on my bike odometer as
well as google pedometer, so I know that it's pretty close to if not exactly a
mile.

Start: Enter the park at Grand Army Plaza and you'll find a large, grassy
triangle. Right in the center of the side that borders the main park loop is a
light post. This is your starting point.

End: Run counter clockwise all the way around and past the 15th St. entrance to
the park (the Pavillion Movie theater corner). Keep going till you hit a
stoplight slightly down the hill that is also an official entrance/pathway out
to the ballfields. This stoplight is the end of the mile course.

It's not a perfect course-- it's slightly hilly. But if you live on that side of
the park it's very convenient. Also, as I was ending a longer run on sunday, I
made sure to hit this mile course to get an idea of how fast I was running.

Hopefully this is helpful to someone...

I have a physical therapist who I think is amazing!! Last year 3 weeks before the marathon I could barely go down a step without my knees killing. I did the marathon with no knee pain.
His name is Mike Zazzali. His number is (212) 366-4450. The place is in the 20s off 5th in Manhattan and is called physical therapy associates of NY.

Feel better,
Alison

Hello Group. I've just found out that I will be going to Michigan to work for Obama/Biden. As a result I must regrettably bow out of the race on Saturday and therefore will not be able to drive. I'm sorry for the change of plans and any inconvenience I've caused. Dave & Kerry it looks like you may be able to catch a ride with Steve (see below).

Cheers,

Thank you, Jim. I was confusing it with the 18-miler next week.

Steve Bonal is also going to drive to Grete's. He will be at Circles about 7 am. he has room for 4 people. If you want a ride or have questions for him, call 917-238-9447, as his access to email is very limited.

Again, drivers should go near 72nd Street, NOT 102nd Street.

My apologies for the wrong info, and good luck to everyone in the race.

Hey all:
A former peace-corps friend of mine is getting a "run for kenya"
charity initiative started to benefit Kenyan children in a poor rural
area. All proceeds go directly to the "Sema Academy," a small school
that gives these children not only education, but food, and shelter.

You can dedicate any future race, of any length, to these children.
You get a sponsorship sheet, and people can donate for each of the
miles you run online and through you directly. I will be doing this
for my 2009 marathon.

Check out the website, and let me know if you have any questions.

Below is a message I got from NYRR about the challenge.. Please contact Janine if interested.

My name is Janine and I work in the marketing department of New York Road Runners.  As you probably know the ING New York City Marathon is right around the corner.  I am working with Foot Locker to put together the Foot Locker Five Borough Challenge team.  The Five Borough Challenge is a race within the marathon in which a runner from each NYC borough is chosen to compete in this special race.

This year the theme of the race is “working moms”.  We are asking what does it take to be a working mom while training for the greatest marathon in the world.  We are still looking for a working mom from Brooklyn who can run the marathon in 3 to 3 ˝ hours.  The women chosen to run for their borough will receive an ASICS uniform.  They will also have their own start time at 9:15am and will be included in the live WNBC broadcast of the marathon.

Please have any Brooklyn working moms send their stories to me at jgautiere@nyrr.org.  They must be registered for the marathon already and include their entrant number with their story.

I really appreciate your help in finding a wonderful Brooklyn working and running mom!

Greetings BRRC. Just wanted to drop everyone a line to give everyone on update on what I've been up to in Switzerland. Not having a job has done wonders for my running. Getting plenty of sleep and getting in my runs during the nicest parts of the day. I even found a public track that has a locker room and showers adjacent to it, free for the running public to use.

My lack of employment hasn't stopped me from making money though. Just today I earned my first 50 swiss francs in the form of a 50 CHF gift certificate to the local supermarket for coming in 3rd in the 18-39 age group and 5th overall in a local 5K. They even thre in an mp3 player that I have no use for. It's good to know that I can still put food on the table.  The race was comprised of two 2.5K loops of a picturesque neighborhood of Geneva called Carouge. You can see the course map here. A fun course although it had more turns than any race I'd ever done.  It was also a thrill to be cheered for in French - "Allez! Allez!" "Bravo! Bravo!" and the bizarre "Up!Up!Up!Up!". What was interesting though was that no overall top three finishers were announced for men or women. In the awards ceremony they only announced the top three finishers in the 18-39, 40-49, and 50+ age groups for each gender. Honorable mention has to go to the reflective snap-bracelets given to all finishers. Leaving NYC I now have to worry about being seen while running at night. Speaking of which...

Last weekend I took part in Le Demi de Nuit , or The Dark Half. It was a half-marathon and 10K held at night, more or less simultaneously. Each participant was given a nifty headlamp as a race souvenir and wearing one during the race was compulsory as the course went through the woods and by farmland where there wasn't a streetlight in sight (hence the name Le Demi de Nuit). The half started at 9:40pm. At around 9:59 I found myself towards the back of the crowd near the start thinking "How am I going to get towards the front?" when the starting gun went off. I spent the next minute scrambling to cross the starting line and then frantically looking for something that was going to record my start time (there wasn't one). I spent the next 5 minutes running on the grass next to the single track road trying both to pass all the slow runners I found myself behind and aiming my headlamp towards any ditch that might send me tumbling downward. It didn't take long to go from passing all the slower 10K runners to catching up with the slower half-marathoners and then having to find a way around them, all while avoiding the mud puddles that had formed on the dirt roads that comprised the middle 3 miles of the course. I quickly found out that this race was half road race, half cross-country race. I crossed the finish line and saw that my official time was a minute slower than my watch time. Guess it pays to follow directions, even if they're being given in a foreign language. Things started looking up as soon as I finished however. Fresh apples, sports drink and about 10 plates of dried apricots greeted finishers. Once you made your way inside, you ripped off a piece of your bib and traded it for either a hamburger, ham sandwich, or a plate of spicy thai food served with quinoa. I chose the latter although soon regretted it.

At the end of both races was when BRRC's absence from my life was most clear. Nothing like having your teammates by your side at the end of a race to recap each mile. Much better than trying to string together your thoughts in a foreign language after exhausting yourself in a race.

Best of luck to everyone in the fall racing season and stay healthy.

The next team race is less than 3 weeks away. It's Grete's 1/2 on Oct. 4, a great prep race for New York Marathon runners.

If you're decided whether to run Grete's or Staten Island, please run Grete's for BRRC.

I'm running the Hartford Marathon the next week, so I won't be running this race. We have 1 driver lined up, Mike Cassaday, who is cc'd on this email. If you want a ride (he has 4 seats available), either email him or call him at 646-306-8126. He will be at Circles at 7 am.

If anyone else can drive, please step up. It's a 102nd Street start, so parking isn't too bad in the area (try the east side around 104th or 105th). However, it's a Saturday, which makes it tougher than on Sunday.

Good luck, all BRRC runners!

John

I understand why people never want to leave their neighborhood! I'll be happy to never step foot in queens again. Round trip, Sunday was 7hrs for me and I had a terrible run. Congratulations on your PR and to all those who ran well. At least now getting to the upper east side seems easy-

I agree. Getting up at 4am on a Sunday isn't my favorite thing to do. I am happy as I had a PR though! Great considering the hills and humidity.

Is anyone carpooling from Dumbo/Brooklyn Heights for Staten Island on Oct 12th? Perhaps I'm a planner, but it was a last minute scramble to find a way to Queens. If someone can give me a ride, I'll bring the coffee!

Seems like everybody I spoke with had an adventure on sunday morning.

It was not a bad run all things considered... once you got there. What a brutal trip out there from BK for a 7AM start! Though, if they had started the race any later it would have been way too hot and humid. There were people streaming towards the start as we ran the first mile-- so I'm sure that I wasn't the only one to find the trip challenging.

Anyway, not a bad race, but NYRR might consider not having so many hills in that last mile and maybe having a bus leave from lower manhattan.

I ran SI for the first time last year and was nervous about the trip. It was
nothing to worry about though, esp. if you are in BK Heights or DUMBO. It's a
very short cab/subway ride to the SI ferry which leaves pretty regularly and can
hold a ton of people.

The problem with the Queens half was that it wasn't on the subway line, and it
was starting so early and so far out that you had to leave before mass transit
was running regularly and dependably. I'm sure that this is not the case if you
live in College Point, Queens, but shouldn't be an issue for most Brooklyners.

Dear Eric,

I am actually new to Brooklyn Runner's club. My name is Jade and I will be running the Tower to Tunnel Run. I just moved to Brooklyn last month. My father was a firefighter in the Bronx. Do you run often with the club?
