All able bodied men and women in Brooklyn are expected to participate in this race as a BRRC runner. .
Participating is more important than winning, although we would not mind to win.

Some of you have read and/or responded to my Yahoo posting, so my apologies ahead of time for the multiple messages. I'll be out of town and mostly out of touch for much of the next two weeks, starting on Wednesday.
It's all hands on deck for this race, especially for the men — we need 10 men for a legal team, the usual 5 for the women. The race costs only $5 and is very exciting — if you've never run the Team Championships, you're in for a treat.
So far BRRC has the following men lined up: Scott M, Dave M, Mike C, Carl, Geert, Noah, Rich C, Steve B, John S.
Jené Shaw is the only woman I've sure is running; maybe Jan knows of others.
Mike C said he can drive and take 4 others: Scott M, Dave M, Carl and I have asked for rides. I don't know yet of other drivers.
I'll be back on Aug. 9. In the meantime we can share info on runners/cars/riders by hitting Reply All (or going to my original Yahoo message — I don't know who's on the listserve and who's not).

Hi John,
I am writing from Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City, the country¢s premiere youth mentoring organization. One of our main events is a 4k Race for the Kids, sponsored by RBC and occuring in September of this year. It will be part of Nickelodeon's Worldwide Day of Play, which celebrates the power of mentoring and the importance of health, exercise, and play, simultaneously raising funds and awareness for Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City.
I was hoping you would be willing to post the race on your events calendar to help us spread the word to the members of your running club. This race will help us reach our goal of providing a mentor to every New York City child who will benefit from the friendship, guidance, and support of a caring adult role-model.
The run/walk is on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at 10 AM. It is in Riverside Park at 72nd Street in Manhattan. Following the Race, all
participants are invited to a picnic featuring the Nickelodeon Slime Across America Truck. Also in attendance will be Nick characters and fun field day games provided by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. For more information you can visit www.raceforthekids.org or call (212) 686-2042 ext. 600.
We hope to see members of your running club at the Race in September!
I will run and have a car. My car will comfortably hold up to four others.
Cheers, Mike Cassaday

The most important team race of the year is coming up soon! The Club Championship is always a great running experience, so don't miss it. It's the fastest, most competitive field of any open race in North America, and it's only $5 if you enter before Aug. 2. The field is so strong that it will carry you to a PR if you're in shape, and the overall field is the smallest of any NYRR race, so the start is very quick for everyone. It's the most inspiring race of the year, every year.
BRRC needs 10 men (5 over 40, and 3 over 50) and 5 women (3 over 40 and 3 over 50) to make a team, and because of the different start times, we should have separate men's and women's cars. The race starts at 102nd Street, and parking is tougher on Saturdays, so I'd suggest gathering at Circles by 6:15 am for men, 7:15 for women.
Please reply if you're running, and state 1) if you need a ride and/or 2) if you can drive, and how many other runners you can take.
We had a fairly weak turnout for Saturday's team race, so I hope that means that everyone has gotten their vacations out of the way and is available for the big race on Aug. 16.
Steve Bonal (917-238-9447) says he wants to revive our tradition of holding a softball game in Prospect Park late in the afternoon of the 16th, so if you'd like to play, let him know.

Here’s a more detailed follow-up to the previous seminar announcement:
This year I’ve enlisted as presenters the two most knowledgeable attendees
from last year’s discussion:
Charlie Hanley has been running marathons for decades and works as a personal
trainer, as well. Charlie follows the scientific literature of running closely
and will discuss recent research into marathon training and performance. He will
also talk about the complex nutritional issues of marathoning.
Tim Monti Wohlpart is a high school varsity cross-country coach and experienced
marathoner, and was also a longtime shoe expert at Jackrabbit. Tim has battled
through many injuries to maintain a high level of fitness and performance.
He’ll speak about injury and recovery issues as well as choosing the right
shoes for training and racing.
I’ll speak about following a training program and about implementing various
race-day strategies.
The panelists would like the attendees to come armed with as many questions as
possible. We’ll be keeping our presentations short to allow for a maximum of
Q&A and discussion.
The discussion will take place at Knights of Columbus Hall (10th Avenue near
Prospect Park South-West).

My first big road race was the Peachtree. I grew up in Atlanta and ran
when it was a 10,000 runner race....now it's HUGE.
Have fun....you may be walking for awhile at the start depending on
your corral.

This is a site that can be used to show your best times for each distance from the nyrr races. if you're interested entering results for other races please email me.
Is anyone else headed down for this? We were visiting family anyway and they
were able to get us numbers. Looking forward to it. I've always wanted to run
this one.
I got a message from a charity to inform our members of the possibility to run the abovementioned marathons. I pass it for your information:
" Charity numbers available for NY, Chicago and MCM marathons.
Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation(MMRF) has a few charity
numbers available for the marathons listed above. Deadline is August 1 to have
runners registered, so if you are interested, please act soon. You can email janemmrf@... and check out www.mmrfmarathon.com ..
Multiple Myeloma is a blood cancer with no cure.
Efforts from MMRF are extending lives, and the MMRF has raised more than $100
million in last ten years – 95% of which goes directly to research. Our team
fundraising makes a difference. We provide training plans, personal donation
pages, fundraising tips, lots of support and team goodies. "
The seminar on 7/16 will start at approximately 7:30 PM at the Knights of Columbus, 10th Avenue off of Prospect Park Southwest, the same place as the monthly meetings and our races.
With the annual marathon seminar, the real season has started. Everybody wishing to participate in the NYCMarathon should start training for serious now.
I remember from last year that the seminar was very good. There is still some writeup of a few years ago posted on the website. Does anybody know the time and the precise address?
Apparently science is evermore confusing. Research seems to prove that after sports meals are more helpful than ibuprofen or icing. The best would be to drink milk.
The NYRR has a special front corral for races that is restricted to
those who have gotten a 72% age-graded mark for an NYRR race in the
last 12 months. It's a nice advantage, as you get a quick start and are
not nearly as jammed in while waiting for the race to begin.
Many BRRC people have met the mark but weren't on the list I was sent.
I went over the list, looked up all the likely candidates I could
remember, checked their results over the past year, and forwarded a
bunch of names to: sgrotewold@...
If anyone who's not listed below has met the 72% age-graded threshold,
email Sam Grotewold at the above address and request that you be listed
and that BRRC be listed in the TEAM column.
Meanwhile, here's the list of those already on the list (marked with an *) and those I requested to have added:
Becca Ades
Brendan Callahan
Jesse Horst
Iain Levine (scored 71.9%, and has many 72% races in the past, so I've made an appeal)
James Riddle
Scott Ruplinger
Adam Smith (scored in April 2007, so may be DQ'd)
Chad Tibbetts
Two of our regulars, Carl Selya-Hammer and Tim Monti Wohlpart, have
scored better than 71% and just need one slightly better race to make
the list. It must be dragging around the extra name that's slowing them
down :).
I ran into a couple BRRC memebers this weekend. We were thinking
about doing another speed workout tonight (Tuesday). The plan is to
show up at the usual place (9th st entrance), at the usual time
(6:45pm) and run down to the Redhook track for about a half hour
workout. It is about a mile and a half down hill to get there, but
the track is pretty nice It looks like I'm going to be stuck at work
tonight and may not be able to make it, but I think Taylor and Carl
will be doing it, and they know the area well. It should be a fun workout.

Many of you may know that Steve's mom has been very ill the last two
months. Unfortunately she passed away this weekend.
The wake will be this Wednesday and Thursday this week at 2-4 and 7-9
at Clavin's Funeral Home in Bay Ridge, 7722 4th Avenue at 78th Street,
718.745.1445. The Mass will be on Friday morning.
for those interested an 18 mile event in brooklyn, next sunday is tour de brooklyn day. it's a biking event but i think rollerbladers and runners show up.

Hello,
First of all-Great write up in the New York Runner Magazine!!!!
My name is Stephanie Carney Manske and I am a parent coach of our PS 29
Running Team. (Cobble Hill) We have had a very successful running year
and our program continues to grow and build. There were 60 fourth and
fifth graders who participated in our weekly runs from September until
now. Our kids also volunteered at mile 8 at the NYC Marathon!!! We
had a "Visiting Runner" speaker and had our first annual track
competition in our school yard with PS 107. The kids' enthusiasm never
abated and all are proud of their PRs and accomplishments.
We end the year with a pizza celebration and a RACE T-SHIRT give away.
If your group would like to CLEAN OUT your closet of gently used
RUNNING t-shirts, please let me know. I can't tell you how excited the
kids are to wear t-shirts from different races. SIZE DOES NOT MATTER!!!
They talk about where it took place and the distance. It really
inspires them!!!
THANKS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION!!!
AND HAPPY RUNNING!!

I went to the first Nike run in Brooklyn in a while. It's a lead up to the upcoming "Human Race".
It was a small group and it meets at Starbucks Saturdays near 1st St and 7th Ave, Brooklyn.
I post this to see if any groups and group members are interested in building running groups instead of subdividing brooklyn runners.
I've lived in Brooklyn for a while and I'm amazed how running groups in Brooklyn seem to be small, yet the groups (as small as they are) continue to sub divide and bicker amongst themselves. I guess that's seems to be part of human nature. But I'd rather think positively and spread information for people to use as they see fit.
Here's information about the Human Race:
1 Day, 1 Milion Runners, 25 Cities, 25 Top Musical Acts Join in Unprecedented New Race Experience
BEAVERTON, Ore. (1 May, 2008)
– Nike today announced the Nike+ Human Race, the world's biggest one
day running event ever, offering runners across the globe the chance to
compete together on August 31, 2008. The 10k event will span multiple
continents and cover 25 cities, including LA, New York,London, Madrid,
Paris, Istanbul, Melbourne, Shanghai, São Paulo and Vancouver.
Following races in each city, participants will be treated to an
exclusive music concert featuring one of today's top artists.
Runners everywhere can join today by visiting nikeplus.com
to "Save A Spot" in their city of choice; registration officially opens
on June 2. Runners outside of the 25 race cities can also still
participate and run in their hometown by using Nike+. With Nike+ iPod
and Nike+ Sport Band, runners can track their miles and sync.
It would make sense to me that instead of having 6 different saturday runs all at the same time is different places in Prospect Park that we have one meeting place or at least that runners know about all the groups and making a conscious choice. The former seems better to me, but reality sometimes stands in the way.
p.s. I want to add that I like all runners, running groups, and teams. I think we are all members of the same team, "runners". Runners are a minority in the population so we should stick together instead of bicker. I'm not paid by nike. I understand the problems with big corporations. I feel that maybe if we all work from outside and inside to bring brooklyn runners together that would be a good thing.
The next team race, is the Healthy Kidney
10k Saturday
May 17 in Central Park. BRRC will be
car-pooling to the
race, meeting as usual at circles at
7:30am. Race starts
at 9am. If you need a ride RSVP now.
Please also let us
know if you can drive, as we might need
extra cars.

All:
This weekend's NYRR Half-Marathon Grand Prix: Brooklyn is designated as a team
points race for men and women, and as such we will be using the "preferred
corral" system at the front of the race. Any athlete with a BLUE
color-coded bib will automatically be granted access to this
"preferred" corral. Athletes with other colored bibs who have met the
72% age graded standard will be allowed into the corral with one of the
stickers distributed by NYRR staff on race morning. Athletes must see NYRR
staff at the entrance to the corral NO LATER THAN 8:45am to get their sticker.
Attached is the list of runners who have met the 72% age-graded standard for
entry into the "preferred" corral. If you have any athletes who are
missing from this list, please e-mail Sam Grotewold @ sgrotewold@... by 4:00pm Friday
(apologies for the late notice). Because of the NYRR team's early start on
Saturday, we will not be able to add any names to the list after this deadline.
It is very important that you communicate to your team members that they must
be in the preferred corral at least eight minutes prior to the start.
Lastly, if you're planning on taking public transportation to the start, please
note that there are a handful of subway service changes that may affect your
trip. Please visit http://www.mta.info/nyct/service/subsrvnweekend.htm
