Hey guys. Commonwealth on
5th Avenue and 12th street has treated me well over the years and its
spacious patio area can comfortably house a large contingent of
runners. Our fellow patrons will thank us for not choking the air with
our post-run aroma.
I'm not sure how many of the 8 x 1 mile repeats I'm going to do but I'd
wager that showing up to the bar around 7:45-8pm would be a safe bet.
Runners: anyone down to sport the BRRC green jerseys? I'll have mine on. Hope to see you there.

Some of us are doing mile repeats tomorrow night, starting down the hill from our gathering spot & doing round trips around the south end of the park (the flattest section we can find). I'll be doing 8 x 1 mile with 30 seconds rest, but you don't have to do the whole workout to join in.
I don't know -- I don't have anything to do with planning the meetings. Call
Steve Bonal at 917-238-9447. He is in charge of them.

I'm hoping to do a solid 10 tomorrow with/after the group run, but I'm more of
an 8:30ish pace if anyone wants to join.

I hate to be the voice of caution here, but I think that making a bike commute home the way to cross train is rather risky. In order to get a good cardio session in, you'd have to be riding with a relatively high RPM. Check out the statistics from the DOT relating to bike-related injuries...
Most of the accidents occur, not surprisingly, during rush hour, and during slippery conditions. Last time I checked, there were no fatalities in spin classes:)

As long as you've got your lights and maybe some reflective
stuff, you're quite visible to car traffic and I found that cars are even more
visible to me (glaring lights). The problem is that the road is not so
visible, so you're more likely to hit potholes, etc. Just make sure you know
your route.

Geert, I commuted by bike all of
last winter and I would definitely agree with the face mask, or balclava,
suggestion. The second most important piece of equipment I used were 'wind
stopper' gloves that look like a lobster's claw. Picture the Star Trek hand
sign and that gives you an idea of the shape of the glove. Having two fingers
in one glove finger goes a long way in keeping them warm. On the colder days I
would agree with Sara and double up with a bar of thin running gloves.
Lastly, when there's ice on the
roads, just remember that it's not worth it to ride. The bridges are especially
treacherous.
Hey Geert (and everyone!)- So sorry to hear about
your injury. Yes! You can bike commute all winter. Get something to cover your
face (not very high tech but I use a handknit scarf wrapped round my face, it's
warm and doesn't get moist from breath), wear superwarm gloves (try doubling up
a pair of running gloves and a heavier pair), and make sure to have lots of
blinking lights. And...stay in the habit, if you take a "break" you
won't want to start up again til spring. This year, I'm trying snowshoe
running. (Must be easier on the bad hip than pavement!?) Best. -Sara

It is absolutely possible to ride anywhere in NYC at rush hour without getting injured. Even when it is "dark out". You have to be hyper-aware of your surroundings, assume you are invisible, have reflective gear on and lights on the bike, etc, but that's just common sense.
Do not let statistics scare you away from commuting on a bicycle.

Only two women that I know of are running, and neither needs a ride.

All able bodied men and women in Brooklyn are expected to participate in this race as a BRRC runner. .
Participating is more important than winning, although we would not mind to win.

Some of you have read and/or responded to my Yahoo posting, so my apologies ahead of time for the multiple messages. I'll be out of town and mostly out of touch for much of the next two weeks, starting on Wednesday.
It's all hands on deck for this race, especially for the men — we need 10 men for a legal team, the usual 5 for the women. The race costs only $5 and is very exciting — if you've never run the Team Championships, you're in for a treat.
So far BRRC has the following men lined up: Scott M, Dave M, Mike C, Carl, Geert, Noah, Rich C, Steve B, John S.
Jené Shaw is the only woman I've sure is running; maybe Jan knows of others.
Mike C said he can drive and take 4 others: Scott M, Dave M, Carl and I have asked for rides. I don't know yet of other drivers.
I'll be back on Aug. 9. In the meantime we can share info on runners/cars/ riders by hitting Reply All (or going to my original Yahoo message — I don't know who's on the listserve and who's not).

Geert, I commuted by bike all of last winter and I would definitely agree with the face mask, or balclava, suggestion. The second most important piece of equipment I used were 'wind stopper' gloves that look like a lobster's claw. Picture the Star Trek hand sign and that gives you an idea of the shape of the glove. Having two fingers in one glove finger goes a long way in keeping them warm. On the colder days I would agree with Sara and double up with a bar of thin running gloves.
Lastly, when there's ice on the roads, just remember that it's not worth it to ride. The bridges are especially treacherous.

As an alternative to running, while injured I am bikommuting to Manhattan.
This summer the number of cyclists has really gone up: in May, it were still mostly isolated old ten speed bicycles. Then there was the invasion of the track bikes. Now a staunch majority of the crowd drives brand new vehicles. There was actually a traffic jam on Manhattan bridge this week.
My main concern is wintertime. Do I have to stop my bikommute when daylight losing time is introduced in fall? Or is the security situation sufficiently improved to continue thriugh witner?
As an alternative to running, while injured I am bikommuting to Manhattan.
This summer the number of cyclists has really gone up: in May, it were still mostly isolated old ten speed bicycles. Then there was the invasion of the track bikes. Now a staunch majority of the crowd drives brand new vehicles. There was actually a traffic jam on Manhattan bridge this week.
My main concern is wintertime. Do I have to stop my bikommute when daylight losing time is introduced in fall? Or is the security situation sufficiently improved to continue thriugh witner?
So I decided to try to heal while not running at all for a few months.
This will even more diminish my role in the club. So please, if you know some basics of spelling, publish on the website the daily running news. If someone can take over more of the website, please do.
I received a request from Nicole, who trains for the marathon this fall, for reviving the "elope to the slope" runs: regular runs from work in midtown to home in Park Slope. I did it during the years I prepared for the Marathon, and it gives a time-efficient way to add mileage, and adds some easy adventure.
If anybody is interested, you can reply here, and contact her directly at: nicolewetsch@...
I will not need a ride back, just a ride in, so that frees up some space on the return at least.

Steve can drive, so there is now plenty of room. Steve may have to go back to Brooklyn early, so it's possible that some riders may have to take the subway back.

It's not a problem for me to take the subway. I'll meet you guys up there.

Noah can't make it tomorrow because of a fmaily situation, so it's looking tight for seats in the 2 remaining cars. My list shows 8 extra riders for the 2 cars, which is exactly the limit.
Can anyone else drive? I have a call in to Steve Bonal, but he often can just barely get away for the race because he works.
Alternatively, if anyone who has asked for a ride can just as easily take the subway, that would alleviate crowding.

I know this isn't a normal post for this forum, but I'm helping my
sister to adopt 2 kittens that she recently rescued. They're
approximately 6-7 weeks old, very cute and very social.
If you're interested please contact me at balbos@....
Hello all. I will be there, with car at 6:15. See you then.
Cheers,
Mike

The race starts at 102nd Street on the East Side.
Only two women that I know of are running, and neither needs a ride.
Good luck to everyone on Saturday!
