Hey BRRC.

Please join me in congratulating Taylor, on winning today's 15k in Central
Park. Kudos to Taylor!

I believe that's the first win by a BRRC member, since Jacek Boral
won the Brooklyn half back in 2001.

Elias and I are gathering at 9 am on Turkey Day at the usual Saturday-Sunday
meeting place (15th & PPW, across from the movie theaters) for what we hope will
be a group run. Hope to see a few of you there to burn some calories.

Wow, thanks John, I did not think of it in terms of so many miles.   As for my pace, I set out to do around 8:30 and was actually at 8:02 for the first 17 miles.  At that point my garmin stopped keeping my pace and I felt like I kept constant until mile 20 and I slowed down quite a bit "before I had to", just to keep it safe.
I was going very strong thru the marathon mark (around 3:45- 3:50) and still after 4 hours.

After that I started to think I should slow it down some more because I was afraid I'd hit the wall.  I think it was my last 6 or 8 miles that were the slowest, but I took people's advice, stayed hydrated, ate a lot, did not push too hard and thought of the remaining "laps" and not miles --that helped a lot!  Only 4 more laps sounds a lot better than only 16 more miles!!

And John, special thanks to your words of encouragement and advice -- really help through the whole thing!

Dave:

I’ve run the Knick, in about 1997. I adopted a walk-run strategy, but I went out too fast and had a painful last 10 miles after a decent marathon effort (3:30 or so). I finished in 5:25, so that’s 115 minutes for the last 11 miles, not very good for a 3-hour marathoner.

Here are a few tips:

  1. Go out very slowly, slower than regular jogging pace.

2. Walk regularly before you feel you need to, esp. during the drink stops and on the uphills. Your pace walking uphill is not that much slower than running uphill — use the downhills and flats for faster running.

3. Eat some real food if you can stomach it, as long as you don’t have to chew much — soft bananas, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, anything soft that you’re comfortable with.

4. Pack some extra clothes in your bag. You may want to change socks, shirts, etc., and you have access to your bag every 4 miles, if the setup is like it was when I ran it in the 1990s.

Good luck! Be patient, and try to buddy up with someone if you can. It’s a long haul (and boring!), and company helps.

Does anyone have any pointers on such a long race?

I feel really good after the marathon last weekend.  Despite going out too fast, I still knocked a few minutes off from last year and did not have to walk at all.

I realized two things:

a. you really do need to save a lot for that last 6 miles.  They were harder this year since I went out much harder than last year.

b. I should be running my half-marathons a lot faster.  My half-way point was very close to my fastest half marathon!

I do plan to walk in the ultra if I decide to do it, maybe I'll walk at the water stops, I guess we'll see.

Anyway, if you have any advice about how to run the 60K, I'd love to hear it.

Yeah, it's pretty easy to move up.  There's plenty of time between when they get you there and when the race starts, like half an hour if I recall correctly.  I think the positioning has something to do with the time you expect to complete the Marathon in.  I put over 4 hours, so that's probably why I ended up in the back.  3 and change would probably get you up pretty close.

Hydration is tricky, as you don't want to underhydrate for the start of course, but you'll be standing around in cooler weather for half an hour, and you'll probably end up wizzing off the side of the Verrazano within the first mile. When I ran, about 20,000 people seemed to do just that.

Dave -

You are seeded in groups of 1,000 runners.  Bibs 1 through 1,000 are blue and are in the first queue for the blue start.  Bibs 1,001 through 2,000 are green and are in the first queue for the green start.  I would imagine you'll be crossing the starting line within a half minute to minute of the starting gun.  I believe the "Local Elite" runners are placed in a small queue directly in front of the green start line, but this only amounts to 100 or so runners (John Shostrom, Richard Gregory, Taylor Delhagen - they'll all be up there, along with other locals).

Tony - you're quite a ways back...it will be several minutes before you reach the start line.

Have fun - wish I could be there to cheer everyone on, but GOOD LUCK anyway!  :)

Brent

I was looking at my marathon number (1763) and wondered if they do a seeding for the start based off of this.  I don't remember what they did last year.

Anyway, I am hoping I have a pretty close-to-start number since I don't want to lose too much time up front.

Also, what staging area are people in this year?
I'm in green, which I see has some major construction, partly why I'm wondering if there is seeding for the start based off bib numbers.

Let me know what you think,

If you are posting news on the website, Just create a new item instead of messing up old news. Please.

- nobody will notice what you have posted (being old news)
- the original news item becomes unintelligible.
- somebody else must clean up your mess.

example: there was a posting explaining everything on our bus (fully licenced to go to the start btw), something was added on a presentation and then somebody asks questions on the bus again, so nobody notices.

Take an example form the non-club members who manage to create very simple and nice announcements on their issues (ex. Mount sinai)

There will be the 3rd annual pre-marathon potluck dinner at the home of BRRC
stalwart Betsy Laganis (and husband Eric Zimiles) next Saturday night, Nov. 3,
at 6 p.m. at 501 17th Street, in the Ditmas Park/Midwood area of Brooklyn. It's
located between Dorchester and Ditmas, about midway between the Cortelyou and
Newkirk stops on the Q train, roughly a mile south of Prospect Park.

Betsy's phone number is 718-284-1009. The fare will be heavy on pasta, not
surprisingly, but drinks, desserts and salads may also be contributed. Betsy's
email is cc'd here.

Hope to see a lot of you there.

John

This year, the bridge will close to all inbound traffic
at 6am to limit traffic on the bridge due to ongoing
construction. Therefore, Steve Bonal has suggested
that the departure time from circles, will be at 5:30am.

For those of you taking the bus, the price is $15
for members & $20 for nonmembers. The bus
will depart from circles, (15th st & ppw) at 5:30am
sharp! There will be no pick up in Bay Ridge this
year..

Reminder that daylight savings ends on Sunday
November 4th, conveniently the day of the
marathon, so plan ahead!

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact
Steve directly, 917-238-9447.

Good luck!

Elias

Yes, there will be a BRRC bus, with pick ups in Park Slope & Bay Ridge.
More details to come in the next few days, once I've gotten our registration placard from the New York Road Runners.

Hey Everyone~

This may have been discussed already (I can't seem to find any old emails from this year saved in my running folders) but is the BRRC doing a bus from Circles Rest. to the NYC Marathon start again this year?  I know it's still a couple of weeks away, but I hate to put anything off to the last minute.

Please let me know if there are plans.  Do we need to RSVP with Steve again?

Thanks

Dave M
