Hello, college basketball fans!

This is the second Schmolik 64 update for 2006. This is my 13th
season doing the Schmolik 64. I will be making updates periodically
up to Selection Sunday, March 12, 2006. My final bracket will be done
after the Big 10 championship on Selection Sunday.

I only choose up to the top 12 seeds in each regional until
Championship Week since the bottom four are usually reserved for
champions of "one-bid" conferences. Most of the teams that "lead"
those conferences now will not gain automatic bids because they fail
to win their conference tournament.Giving these teams a "seed" would
not be accurate, even if the teams do win their automatic berth since
their seed may change due to their position among the eventual teams
in those bottom seeds.

Just an addendum: some of
the schools mentioned below
may not be bidding to host
the tournament. The NCAA is
keeping the list of
finalists secret.

Sorry for the relative lateness of this week's projection, but last
nigght's so-called Super Bowl was terrible. A bad halftime, a worse
national anthem, so-so commercials, blown calls over the place and
worst of all, Mike Holmgren went straight to the locker room after
losing. Hopefully we'll recover from this super "DUD" with dignity and
grace, but not for another week or so. Anyway here are the projections.

Welcome to Bracketwatch for Monday, January 9th 2006. Starting this
week, i'll start my posting of the projections with a little essay
relating to the bracket. Enjoy.

The Lure of Dayton

Dayton, Ohio. A typical Rust Belt town with a dwindling population and
factories closing at least once a year or so. It also has a 36-year
old basketball venue that still has that new facility sparkle. It's
known as the UD Arena and has hosted 66 NCAA tournament games since
it's 1969 opening.
The last five years has seen the arena host what many people
derogatorily call the play-in game. The NCAA refers to it as simply
the Opening Round game, because both of the participants are
considered as part of the field. And has been the case since 2001,
when it was reintroduced to preserve the 34th at-large bid, they play
to become the last 16th seed in the field.
This year, UD Arena will also host 1st and 2nd round action, which
brings up quite a conundrum for the selection committee; Do we send
the Opening Round winner to another site, or force one of the number 1
seeds to come to Dayton to play the worst seed in the field? Since the
Opening Round winner MUST play in a Friday/Sunday subregional, the
winner will go to just one of 4 places(Auburn Hills, Dallas,
Philadelphia and of course, Dayton). Come Selection Sunday, some #1
seed who has rightfully earned the right to play near their home will
instead be force to play in Dayton, or the opening round winner will
be on the road to a very hostile enviroment.

And now the projections, which are based on all results through Sunday.

Note: Conference leaders have the conference they represent listed in
parenthesis. If there is tie for the conference lead, the team with
the better record gets priority. If the tie cannot be broken by
overall record, the team with the better RPI will get priority. Later
in the season, H2H results will take priority.

Hello, college basketball fans!

This is the third Schmolik 64 update for 2005. This is my 12th season
doing the Schmolik 64. I will be making updates periodically up to
Selection Sunday, March 13, 2005. My final bracket will be done after
the Big 10 championship on Selection Sunday.

Comments:
The top four seeds remain the same from last week. Even though Kansas
is #1 in the RPI and won a big game vs Oklahoma State, they have
still won just one of their last four games. The weakness of the SEC
hurts Kentucky's claim to a #1 seed at the moment. Boston College,
despite two losses in the last two weeks, remains #1 due to their
better conference record and RPI (conference and overall).

Washington and Gonzaga could be on a collision course for a rematch
in the West regional semifinals. Four wins over top 25 teams
including the win over Arizona last week put them over Gonzaga in the
RPI and in the polls. However, Gonzaga will go to Boise instead of
Washington because of the head to head win. The two will likely be
fighting for the right to stay in Boise. I never thought I would see
the day I would actually say that. Arizona is likely assured of being
in Boise since they can't be in Tuscon. Washington would be more
comfortable that Gonzaga if they have to go to Tuscon since they
visit there every year. The Arizona fans might boo them, however.
Speaking of Boise, they recently renamed their gym the "Taco Bell
Arena". Has anyone ever had a taco with potatoes on it? They should
have named it after a burger place, since burgers and french fries go
together. Why would Taco Bell buy the rights to an arena in Boise?
Aren't tacos more of a southwest thing? Has anyone in Boise ever
eaten a taco? The great thing about the pod system is that the
highest seeded non western team to be shipped to Boise is sixth
seeded Alabama.

The big winner among conferences this week is the Big 10. Indiana's
win over Michigan State vaulted them into the field. They also have a
win over Wisconsin, which Minnesota does not have. Both teams are one
win away from 10 wins, which should be enough to warrant a bid. But
the Big 10 (minus the Big 3) are down, especially Penn State and
Purdue, who have RPI's lower than 200. The two teams are likely to
meet in the 4-5 game in the Big 10 tournament, and the winner has a
much better chance of getting a bid than the loser. Will the Big East
get 8 teams in the tournament? West Virginia has no wins over top 25
opponents and their only wins over the other seven potential Big East
NCAA teams are two over Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh, however, has beaten
Connecticut and swept Syracuse. If West Virginia finishes ahead of or
tied with Pitt in conference, there will be a lot of pressure to put
West Virginia in the Big Dance.

Comments:
Wake Forest gets the nod for the fourth #1 seed over Oklahoma State.
They have beaten North Carolina and Duke among five wins over top 25
teams (only Illinois has more). Currently, North Carolina leads the
ACC and has the inside track to the #1 seed in the East (although
Boston College will have a say as well).

Despite being two games behind in the Big 10 standings, Wisconsin
gets the nod over Michigan State due to the head to head win as well
as three total top 25 wins (Michigan State currently has none). That
can easily change when Wisconsin heads to East Lansing this week.
Minnesota and/or Indiana will have their work cut out in order for
the Big 10 to avoid another three bid season (the same three as last
year).

Currently, it's at the point where I'm trying to fill slots.
Mississippi State and UCLA are 4-6 in their last 10. Usually, I don't
take teams that are that poor in the last 10, but someone had to make
it in. Georgia Tech finds themselves on the outside looking in. We'll
see if that trend continues.
